"A must-visit for any outdoorsman or horse lover, the National Sporting Library & Museum was founded in 1954 in Middleburg with the mission of “preserving, promoting, and sharing the literature, art, and culture of equestrian, angling, and field sports.” The collection here is small but tight, and ranges from photographs to works on canvas and sculpture, all spanning centuries. Most of the special exhibitions are focused on horses and equestrian sports (you are in horse country, after all)—a fall 2020 exhibition, Thrill of the ’Chace: Steeplechase in Art , opens Sept. 9 and will be on view through March 21, 2021." - Laura Ratliff, Kristen Schott

Google
Drive from Alexandria to this Middleburg location only to see the Secretariat monument/bronze statue. Was able to go into the library and hear some of the presentation. Driving through the town, it's very charming and has a lot of nice little shops and restaurants. Want to come back when it's cooler just to stroll along the main road. Thank you for hosting this historic event.

Gallery was spacious, peaceful, and I could enjoy the great artwork free of crowds. Library was even better! I had a great conversation about some of their most treasured books, and then I picked a 1897 copy and read for a while. Gem!

Some of the exhibits are closed now so the price of admission is half price and free for kids at the museum. The artwork was interesting; the plaque descriptions were very informative. There is currently a special exhibit of Secretariat downstairs in the library that has horseshoes showing how long his stride was that was pretty neat along with other cool (more contemporary) pieces. The library had some really great kids books we sat and read for a bit. Highly recommended (also with kids).

Off the beaten path. Great exhibits, but the current showcase is called Identity Restraint: Art of the Dog Collar which is very informative. A one of a kind museum that you must put on your calendar if you're visiting the Salamander Resort and Spa or Middleburg.

Beautiful building and grounds, amazing staff. John Connolly, the "George L. Ohrstrom, Jr. Librarian" is a spring of knowledge. I had the opportunity to be invited to see the rare books collection and it was amazing. Even if you don't like fox hunting or horses you can still appreciate the art and passion for the sport that is shown through this collection. Or just visit to enjoy one of the most elegant public libraries you probably will ever go to. I only had time to visit the Library, but when I go back I will take the time to visit the museum as well. There is an $10 admission fee for adults, $8 for seniors and teens, and children under 12 get in free.

came on a snowy saturday. Nicole at the front desk was friendly and explained the exhibits and points of interest in the museum. museum entry was $10 and the library was free. she directed us to the library and the book on the japanese fox, kitsune. valerie at the library showed us to the book and welcomed us to the cozy reading room. the staff was extremely friendly.

Yelp
Great art work that focuses on the horse and hound. Rotation of artwork comes through a decent amount, and the library has a lot to offer those who love to do research. It is not as big as some other museums, but definitely can hold its own.

Yelp
Came here as it was recommended as a unique historical site to see in Middleburg. $10 entry fee, and I would estimate it takes about 30 minutes to go through the entire exhibit. I liked the amount of paintings about the sporting horses as well as dogs. Overall good selection, and is a nice area to escape the heat in the summer! Be sure to check out the library next door as well.

Yelp
Currently redoing some of the galleries. Nice collection. Some very interesting pieces. Two buildings to visit, one a library and the other the museum.

Yelp
Great! Big house like Bruce Wayne's Manor. In the pretty country town of MIddleburg. A totally free library with 24,000 or so books on horses and fishing. Lots of nooks for reading. I could hole up here for a whole day and then go get a pint at one of the local gorgeously historic establishments. So peaceful! P.S. Free but donations gladly accepted.

Yelp
Superb collection that is well curated. The exhibits change regularly and are always interesting. Additionally, they have regular presentations and free drawing classes on the first Sunday of each month. Filled with the spirit of the community.

Yelp
Go here for a lovely day trip from DC area. As of now they have a gem of a art show by Alfred Munnings the painter of all things horse from 1904 to 1940's. it includes information on his personal life as well as why you see the same ponies, people and horses in various paintings-especially see the striking modern portrait of his second wife Violet. Girls who love animals would love this collection.

Yelp
This museum was a disappointment. It only contained a small collection of artwork, mostly fox hunting scenes. The works were fine, but I saw and read everything in 20 minutes. Definitely not worth $10. I wish they had more artwork related to fishing and hunting. The museum is free the last Sunday of the month, but don't pay to go--especially not $10.

Yelp
Beautiful setting in the town of Middleburg, Virginia. Interesting selection and wide variety of art, and literature about the equine, fox hunting and fishing sports in the United States. Apparently they have research experts that visit here from all over the World. Highly recommend for anyone interested in early American sports or for the curious.
