The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in Taichung was a rewarding stop during my trip. The building is large and modern, with generous open spaces and natural light that make it easy to navigate and pleasant to explore. One of the highlights was the Liao Shiou Ping retrospective exhibition, which offered an insightful journey through the works of one of Taiwan’s most influential modern artists. The curation was clean and balanced, with vibrant prints and mixed media pieces that showed the range and depth of his work. It was genuinely interesting and gave context to how Taiwanese contemporary art evolved through global influences.
Outside, the sculpture park wraps around the museum in a wide green space, dotted with installations and contemporary pieces. Though not particularly dense, it adds a leisurely dimension to the visit and makes the whole experience feel more relaxed and open.
The museum is free to enter and not overly crowded, which made it easy to take my time. It may not have the blockbuster feel of major international galleries, but it holds its own with thoughtful exhibitions and a calm, well-designed setting. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Taichung and enjoy contemporary art.
