3 enchanting day trips in the south of London for the curious traveller - SilverKris

"A 17th-century Jacobean house set within extensive countryside that was once home to a famous English author; the site includes a working watermill, scenic walks across 121 hectares, and an excellent tea room and bookstore, making it appealing to literature lovers and those seeking a historic country-house visit." - Demi Perera

Our second visit here and this time we took our daughter and 6 year old grandaughter with us. They fell in love with it just like we did when we first came here. So relaxing and great for a very chilled Sunday afternoon. I love just wandering around and granddaughter loved the mill. The house is fascinating to visit and learn more about Rudyard Kipling and the 6 year old was quite taken with all the old furniture etc and the library of over 2000 books

This is a really nice National Trust, very interesting to learn more about Rudyard Kipling and inspiration and such for the Jungle Book. The house is not that big, but there is lots to see. The grounds are also beautiful, and lots of space to enjoy a picnic and to walk around. You can also walk down to the water mill, which also is very interesting and has some hands on areas. The cafe is also very nice with some indoor and some courtyard seating. There is also a second hand bookshop with lots of choice and a nice gift shop also.

Beautiful place, home of Rudyard Kipling, the gardens here are stunning. The beautiful avenue of lime trees were there when the author bought the house and the pond he put in paid for by his Nobel Prize money, along with some other landscaping. Room Guides are friendly and informative, sadly the shop staff weren't. Interesting walk to the mill, but this is only working on Wednesdays, and the flour not able to be purchased due to issues with flour bags! ... maybe another time.

What a beautiful property. I’ve been to many stately homes, but this is definitely one of my favourites. This property also offers excellent walks with an amazing vegetable garden, the perfect day out in the sunshine!

This is a stunning house set in the beautiful Burwash Weald. The NT volunteers were exceptionally knowledgeable and informative as you moves through each of the rooms where Kipling read, worked and slept.

Fourth visit yesterday. It’s my most favourite National Trust house and we always enjoy coming here through the seasons. My only disappointment yesterday was eating out of cardboard boxes and takeaway cups!! Not okay at all.

I loved walking round the gardens and ponds and down to the water mill building which I did have a look in. I did not go in to the main house as my friend had her dog with her. Dogs cannot go in the mill or main house but are ok on a short lead in the rest of the grounds and gardens. The cafe was very good for food and drinks and is dog friendly. We also picked up the NT red route walk by the water mill pond which takes you round the fields and woods of the estate and is about 2 miles when you get back to the main house. Car park for non-members is £4.

Although we have visited Batemans many times there is always something to catch the eye. The pond was looking very good with lots of lily's in flower and a multitude of goldfish fry. The autumn crocus seem to be making an early appearance as did the cyclamen. The room stewards were very attentive and it's great to learn something new about the place each time we go. A great afternoon out.

Yelp
We really enjoyed touring the home and gardens of Rudyard Kipling. We arrived at 9:30 before it opened and took a long walk through the fields surrounding the house. The gardens opened at 10 and the house at 11. The gardens are relatively small compared to some of the other houses we have visited. I especially liked the old mill. That was there when Kipling bought the house in the early 20th century it he made changes to it. The house itself was beautiful and devoid of many modern conveniences. I found it to be more like an early 1800s home than 1900s when he lived there.

Yelp
Amazing National Trust place to visit! Both the house and the gardens have a lot of character and history and there are activities for children. I travelled 40 miles to get here: it was definitely worth the journey! It was full of information boards and facts and all interior and exterior design was original. Bateman's contains a tearoom (which I didn't visit) but it looked great. All well kept. I also enjoyed visiting the Mill. Definitely worth a visit, I shall definitely be returning. I'd recommend this to anyone! Tip: If you are a NT member, remember to bring your cards for parking and entry. If you aren't a member, bring some change for parking!

Yelp
Home to Rudyard Kipling and his wife. Near to Burwash high street. Well, a short walk down the hill. Surrounded by the wooded landscape of the Sussex Weald, this Jacobean house is magnificent. Lovely well kept gardens. A working Mill in the grounds and a nice tea shop. Well worth an afternoon's visit and combine with checking out the beautiful Burwash village. Either park in Burwash high street car park or use the car park at Bateman's.

Yelp
I've lost track of the number of times I have visited Batemans open air concerts / WW1 & WW2 weekend events / Indian Horse Regiment displays / re-enactments / a quick snack or afternoon tea whatever the excuse its worth it every time. I never tire of the house and its history & always glean a new snippet of information whenever I walk round!
