Have visited many National Trust sites, but I was rather disappointed with this one. Although we had a voucher for free entry, I would have been very disappointed if I had paid.
The house was not fully open, with only the downstairs accessible. The lighting inside was poor, meaning I had to keep checking where I was stepping. Some areas appeared unkempt, while others felt poorly thought out in terms of display. This was particularly noticeable in the courtyard, where several sheds were filled with assorted old artefacts. Displaying one or two items properly would have been far more effective and created a better photo opportunity, rather than what felt like a dumping ground.
Outside, I also noticed plants (possibly ivy) growing between the shutters and the glass, which added to the overall feeling of neglect.
The redeeming feature of the site is the garden. Despite it being winter, the gardens looked good and I’m sure they are impressive in the summer. The snowdrops were especially lovely. I may return in the summer to see the gardens, but I would not pay for entry.
Overall, disappointing when compared to Plas Newydd and Penrhyn Castle.
