Where to Eat, Stay, and Visit in England's Lake District

"It was too wet to walk, so we drove to Hill Top, the house where Potter wrote and illustrated most of her books. Originally a Londoner, she began vacationing at the Lakes in 1882 and bought Hill Top in 1905 with money from her writing. The house became a museum for her collection of china, furniture, door knockers, spears, and spinning wheels." - Travel + Leisure Editors

We had a great time exploring the house and gardens! Was very well kept with a nostalgic feel. We also picked up some lovely things from the gift shop. Would recommend booking in advance to secure parking

Beatrix Potter’s charming home in the Lake District, and it’s an amazing experience for fans of her work. The house itself is fascinating, feels like going back to time. filled with intricate details that bring her stories to life. Every room feels like stepping into a page of Peter Rabbit, with well-preserved furniture and personal touches that reflect her creativity. The staff are knowledgeable, offering great insights into her life and writing process. The vegetable garden is a highlight—beautifully maintained and true to the era, it’s easy to see how it inspired her tales. My only gripe is the parking, which is quite cramped and can be a hassle, especially on busy days. Still, the experience inside makes it well worth the visit. Highly recommend for a literary trip back in time!

Oooh this just transported me back to my childhood, reading the Beatrix Potter books with my grandparents. Parking is a bit tricky (car park needed pre-booking and was full) but we all loved our visit; the house was full of Beatrix Potter treasure, and the garden is just like in the books! Cute little summer games out on the lawn like egg and spoon racing and skittles, and a member of staff even came out to read Beatrix Potter books to the kids. Quaint is the word!

Gorgeous weather which made it even better. Lovely house, could imagine Beatrix Potter writing here, very colourful garden area esp wisteria and azaleas although not much growing in the vegetable patch. Maybe Peter Rabbit had visited!!

It was an amazing experience. There is a beautiful garden just like the illustrations in Peter Rabbit. The old, small house where Beatrix Potter lived is very pretty. My 2-year-old twin boys ran around the garden many times. The Peter Rabbit sign was so cute.

Beatrix Potter's home is wonderful to visit, and left about as she would've had it as she intentionally donated it to the National Trust. The 7 rooms can be seen in 20-30 minutes (3 downstairs and 4 upstairs), though one volunteer got talking about her life and history so we stayed for 40. The rooms include her collections and objects, as well as an exhibition on The Tale of Two Bad Mice. Signs and info books/boards available in many rooms. Note prebooking for the car park is required as it only has around 15 spaces. Once buy tickets and checkin near the car park, it's a 150 metre walk down the road to the house's entrance. They also have a gift shop with a lovely selection of Peter Rabbit gifts. Clean toilets also near the house, and a small garden. (No cafe, but local pub nearby.)

Recommend booking a ticket for this as it had timed entry (as well as limited parking in the National Trust car park) but well worth a visit. Beautifully restored and you can really see where Beatrix Potter got her inspiration for her books and drawings!

Visited Hilltop with family as National Trust members, the lady at reception treated us like royalty! So warm & welcoming. The house itself is a treasure trove transporting you back and giving you a glimpse into the real Beatrix, warmth emanates from every room with staff on hand to answer questions and share their knowledge! A special mention has to go to Tim located in the bed chamber, his enthusiasm was palpable as he conveyed a slice of Beatrix life! His knowledge of the building, the woman and her life was fantastic! This man should be giving full evening talks not just short tour guide snippets! I would certainly pay to listen to him expand and share his knowledge! The gardens obviously sparce as only March but you can visualise the small kitchen garden in full production, with wildlife in full flow. We had coffee and cake from Joeys shepherds hut on site and it was well worth it! The date slice was delicious as were the shortbread bunnies we purchased to take away. The shop has a good selection of beatrix potter merchandise from illustrations ( my personal favourites) childrens books and toys, to books, crafts and toiletries. Something for everyone to take away a souvenir. Would definitely recommend everyone visits 🐰

Yelp
What a beautiful place to visit. If you're a fan of Beatrix's books or her conservational work, Hill top should be on your Lake District bucket list. Super easy to purchase tickets online online which I highly advise. You can also buy in person but I didn't want to run the chance of it being sold out. I also recommend getting the first booking at 10. We showed up at 9:30 knowing there was limited parking. You can always walk around to kill time. The scenery is just breathtaking. The tickets get you a tour inside Beatrix's Hill top house. Original furnishings and de orations transport you back. The place feels so cozy. My favorite was the parkour. National trust guides answer all your questions. Impressive to see it's pretty much still a working farm. So thankful for her vision of conserving the land.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots in the Lake District. Not only did Beatrix Potter write the Peter Rabbit books, but she also was an environmentalist and conservationist who has protected a good chunk of the Lake District from being developed. Therefore, visiting her house was surreal and gorgeous, as her village and home looked similar to how it must've looked hundreds or years ago. For 12€, you can go in Beatrix's garden and home, which has all of her furniture and special belongings on display. The Peter Rabbit books started when she began writing little stories to her godson and those original letters were just sitting on a desk in the cottage. I couldn't believe we could see those and they weren't even under glass. There is also a beautiful dollhouse in one of the rooms that she made and then wrote about it (the book about it is in the room too). Her garden is absolutely gorgeous and we loved wandering around the tiny village. There were rolling green hills and blue skies for miles. So special!

Yelp
We are spending the week in the Lake District and my sister really wanted to see this attraction. I wasn't really interested but went for her benefit. Wow, was I wrong. Way more interesting than I expected. Getting to see her house and the way it matched up to her illustrations was great! Then the cherry on top was Tim. He was stationed in the spare bedroom and what an amazing wealth of knowledge he had!! I loved hearing all about her life before she was an author and more about her personal life in general. He is a real asset to the house. A great experience overall!!

Yelp
"HILLTOP"......was purchased by Beatrix Potter in 1905 and this farm house is where she wrote a lot of her childrens stories. You get to walk through her home, see her furniture, and items she used. See the views she drew her wonderful illustrations, see the window seat...Step out through the front and walk down into Mr.Magreggors garden. It's a beautiful little place. We had to reserve a time to go through the home. They will call you in, so there are not to many in the house at one time.Very low ceilings. If you are a fan of Beatrix Potter and her work, this is a great stop for you. Just remember the last admission is at 4:00. We almost missed getting in because of this!
