National Trust - Sutton House and Breaker's Yard

You have to book in advance, I would recommend the tour as it tells you all the details and the magnificent story of the house. Different rooms are decorated in different styles. It is a fantastic house, especially that it is five hundred years old! It still has its original well in the yard! Toilet facilities are available here. Parking is free around on a Sunday.

Staff are very nice and enthusiastic. The oldest house in East London but aside from its age, it just wasn’t that interesting which was a shame. £7 entry is reasonable though if you’re looking for something to do.

Took the train there to find out it is closed, despite clearly mentioned on the National Trust website that the place is open! There were 8 other people left disappointed. Nobody picked up the phone and doors were closed. A great use of the National Trust membership.

600 Year old Tudor House. Do not miss this beautiful and authentic survivor of the Tudor Age. Fireplaces, wood paneling, and original kitchen, it's all open for you to see. Do not miss it, or you will regret it. My tour volunteer, Christine, gave us the best tour I have ever been on.

Interesting bit of history, well maintained with beautiful gardens, knowledgeable and friendly staff and volunteers, a unique selection of books offered for donation, and lots of easy to read information in each room.

Nice historic place, lovely staff. We really enjoyed our trip. Originally known as 'Bryck Place', Sutton House was built in 1535 by Sir Ralph Sadler, Principal Secretary of State to Henry VIII, and is the oldest residential building in Hackney. It is a rare example of a red brick building from the Tudor period. Sutton House became home to a succession of merchants, sea captains, Huguenot silk-weavers, Victorian schoolmistresses and Edwardian clergy. The frontage was modified in the Georgian period, but the core remains an essentially Tudor building. Oak panelled rooms, including a rare 'linen fold' room, Tudor windows and carved fireplaces survive intact, and an exhibition tells the history of the house and its former occupants.

Serve yourself cafe, lots of really good affordable and secondhand books, quirky campers and tables to chill out on way through Hackney. Highly recommended for those seeking a bit of sanctuary
