On the Grid : Treasurer's House Garden

"When the sun comes out in York its parks soon fill up with visitors. One of York's lesser known but stunning old buildings to visit is the Treasurer's House and its beautiful walled garden. It's a delightful hidden gem, tucked away just within the grounds of York Minster. The house, which is run by The National Trust has a small entrance fee but admission to the garden is completely free. It is a lovely quiet place to relax and soak in the historical surroundings, just don't tell too many people!" - Abell Design

York Treasurer’s House: A charming spot with beautiful grounds and plenty of history to uncover, but our visit was a bit of a mixed bag. We joined a walking tour that gave us a peek into the property, but unfortunately, the house itself was closed that day—a bit disappointing, to say the least. While the history is fascinating, the ticket prices (£13.95 per person) can feel steep, especially if you're visiting with family, unless you’re a National Trust member. Considering the price, we’d recommend exploring some of the many walking tours in York instead, which offer a broader glimpse into the city’s rich past for a better value. That said, the grounds are lovely and worth a quick visit if you're in the area, but maybe check ahead to ensure the house is open before you go!

Brilliant place in the heart of York. Hadn't realised it would be so big and the history and storytelling was great. Really enjoyed the tour and our guide was very knowledgeable and informative. Garden was gorgeous too. 5*

We hadn't realised this was a guided tour of the National Trust, but what an experience. The tour guides were extremely knowledgeable/friendly answering any questions. Frank Green we heard lots about, what a remarkable man he was. Sharing his wealth, not only with his servants but later in life giving the house and its belongings to the national trust so people could enjoy. Fabulous to be in rooms of royalty. Seeing where Prince Albert Edward Princess Alexandra (of Denmark) and Princess Victoria stayed. The collection is fantastic, with great artistry in the manufacture of many pieces.

Came here a few weeks ago on the 27th or so, so a Sunday, and it was open for tours then. They fit us in nicely and our tour guides were great. Our tour guide said she had a Welsh name and her tour was really informative and passionate about history and we learnt more than we expected. :D

Today I had a walk in the grounds of the Treasurer’s House, not far from York Minster. I rarely go past there so it was lovely to see that the Gardens were open and lots of people were exploring. It is free to explore the gardens, however there is a charge to visit the house. It doesn’t take long to walk around but there is so much to see and it’s just full of beautiful plants and historic features. I love the tiny stone seat in the little alcove, the statues and the impressive line of pollarded trees (very much a feature I associate with York). Well worth a visit!

Chose a good time to visit when there weren’t many people around. The house is atmospheric and the Christmas displays add something special. Couldn’t do justice to the tree in the dining room as the decorations are needlework ‘baubles’ created by the volunteers, so no photos apart from the ones in my head. Hope to visit again soon.

Make sure you don’t miss Sunday’s special tours! We had originally tried to visit on Saturday however when we arrived we found out that we needed to book onto a tour. The next one wasn’t for another hour and a half so we ended up booking for Sunday instead. We’re so glad we did as it turned out on Sundays they are working on introducing a different, new tour. The usual tour discusses some of the objects found in the house that were collected by the last owner before the trust, Frank Green. A few key items were explained on the Sunday tour however the main focus was on the lives of the many different families who have inhabited the house. The house itself feels very eclectic and varied showcasing items and decor of different time periods and this was really reflected in our tour. We heard stories of different residents throughout the history of the house and the impact they had on York and for some even further afield. Our guide Amy was so knowledgeable and passionate and was truly fascinating to listen to, the hour flew by! She answered our questions as we walked around and even shared a few ghost stories about the house. We feel so lucky to have stumbled upon this tour and would definitely recommend it if you too are lucky enough to be in York on a Sunday.

We really enjoyed our visit to the Treasurer's House. We took the Sunday tour about the previous owners and occupiers of the house and Beth was a fantastic tour guide - enthusiastic, informative and happy to take any questions. My Grandad worked at Greens in Wakefield as a draughtsman for over 30 years, and he'd told me some interesting stories about the previous owner of this house (Frank Green) We didn't feel rushed and throughout the House we felt welcomed by other staff too. Really enjoyable experience and would thoroughly recommend to others.
