"A Night at Ibsen's Main Stage Oslo’s main theatre opened its doors in 1899, featuring plays by Bjørnson, Holberg, and Ibsen, and as a consequence put Norwegian plays on the map, so to speak. The theatre still preforms all the old classics as well as exciting new plays. Nationaltheatret came to be Ibsens theatre, and attracted, and indeed still attracts, most of Norway’s actors of repute. Located by the high street Karl Johan en route to the Royal Palace, it’s strategically placed close to lots of other interesting highlights as well!"

Lovely interior and show. Came here for the Hakkebakkeskogen show with my son and it was very good. Small setting, but very professional. My son also enjoyed it a lot.

The National Theatre (Norwegian: Nationaltheatret) in Oslo is one of Norway's most prominent and historic cultural institutions. Located in the heart of Oslo, it is a key venue for theatrical performances, including plays, operas, and other cultural events. The theatre's opening in 1899 was a major national event, attended by King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway. It has survived two world wars and remains a resilient symbol of Norwegian culture. The theatre's clock tower is a recognizable landmark in Oslo. The National Theatre in Oslo is not just a venue for performances but a cornerstone of Norwegian cultural life, preserving and promoting the country's rich theatrical traditions.

A very nice place, definitely a powerful symbol of Oslo. The building itself is a landmark with its grand fascade and statues of Henrik Ibsen and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson outside. These two are the country’s greatest playwrights. It is the main stage for Norwegian drama and classical theatre, and still central in Oslo’s cultural life.

I recommend doing the guided tour. There is plenty of related art on the walls and the styling of the building is fantastic. I was quite surprised to see how small everything is given how big Oslo is.

Theaters should be like this- grand and regal looking. There are lots of prominent people’s statue outside the theater.

The National Theatre of Oslo is not just a venue—it’s a grand stage where stories come to life and imagination takes flight. Nestled in the heart of the city, this historic building stands as a testament to Norway’s rich theatrical tradition and artistic excellence. With its majestic façade and ornate details, the theatre itself is a masterpiece of architecture, embodying both grace and grandeur. Inside, the magic only deepens. The velvet-lined halls, intricately decorated ceilings, and glistening chandeliers evoke a timeless elegance, making you feel as if you’ve stepped into a different era. Each performance, whether a gripping drama or a whimsical comedy, is delivered with an intensity that captivates the audience from the first act to the final curtain call. The artistry of the actors, the vibrant set designs, and the masterful direction converge to create an experience that’s both visually and emotionally stirring. The National Theatre is more than a place—it’s a realm of artistic exploration, where the boundaries of reality blur, and the power of storytelling reigns supreme. It is here that language transforms into poetry, emotions into movement, and visions into unforgettable spectacles. For those seeking to be inspired, enchanted, and moved, the National Theatre of Oslo offers an artistic journey like no other, leaving an indelible mark on the soul.

An historic building with a distinct style. Well kept, even if it also shows its age in places. Worth both a visit, and the wait if you like to see a performance. Just mind that the old seats are made for a time when people were shorter, and you might have issues with the limited knee-space

Yelp
Beautiful building in Oslo, Norway. Our friends took us here while we were visiting this incredible city. Did we watch a performance here? Unfortunately, the answer was no because time would not allow it. Did not even go inside. :( They said that our stay in Oslo needs to be longer next time. Apparently, there are a few guided tours to choose from for exploring the National Theater and learning more about its history. I think it was built in 1899. It is a stunning tourist attraction. The outside of this building is simply lovely. The fountain close by is quite wonderful also. Maybe one day we will go inside. Our friends say that you cannot truly appreciate it til you walk in there.

Yelp
The National Theatre in Oslo is one of Norway's largest and most prominent venues for performance of dramatic arts. The main building is centrally located between the Royal Palace, Oslo and the Parliament of Norway. It is served by National Theatre Station and National Theatre metro stations. It was designed by architect Henrik Bull. Tourist attraction, however beautiful and detailed architecture buildings to photograph.
