The 'Wellness Capital of Texas' Was Just Named America’s Best Small Spa and Wellness Town

"Known for its old-school barbecue and the gigantic wooden rocking chair at the original Lipan location, the Mineral Wells outpost serves brisket, sausage, turkey, and smoked bologna with classic sides like barbecue beans, mac and cheese, and potato salad; I saved room for banana pudding, cobblers, fried pies, and ice cream cones and noticed a selection of cookbooks, mugs, jerky, homemade fudge, and jams for unique souvenirs — plus there’s still a photo-worthy large rocking chair outside." - Amanda Ogle Amanda Ogle Amanda Ogle is a writer and editor who specializes in travel, food and drink, sustainability, and general lifestyle topics. Google
Came here on a whim during a quick stop in Mineral Wells. So glad I did! This is the cutest barbecue place I've ever been. Lots of seating and a specious store section. Loved the country music. I had a large chopped brisket sandwich with baked potato salad and banana pudding. Added sauce and some fixings. Food was soooo good! I especially loved that I had enough leftover to eat later for dinner. Service was also above and beyond. I look forward to returning on my next visit to town.

Google
I found this place while traveling through Mineral Wells today. It's a cute little place but the food is just ok. I had the sliced brisket, mac and cheese, barbecued beans, and jalapeno cornbread. I ordered the brisket on the fatty side but didn't get it. It was more on the dry side and sorely lacking flavor. I shouldn't have to drown it in sauce to get it to taste like something. The mac and cheese was your typical box stuff and the jalapeno cornbread was also a little on the dry side, but pretty good flavor. The best part about the meal was the barbecue beans. Several of the other reviews mention friendly staff, but I didn't get that feeling while I was in there today. Brisket 4/10 Mac and cheese 5/10 Cornbread 7/10 BBQ beans 8/10

Google
Cora was so awesome!! I have celiac and have reactions to gluten and this place has very very knowledgeable staff with wonderful customer service and made sure they cut fresh meat in case anything had cross contamination. Lots of options, separate menu and good food!! I have celiac and had no reaction at all. Will definitely stop next time we drive through!!

Google
Fun place to eat and shop. Great brisket, and other smoked meats. I had the Carolina dog with Tater salad and a Dublin cola. The Carolina dog was a giant hot dog with Coleslaw, brisket and Carolina BBQ sauce on top (a mustardy vinegar sauce), it was delicious. Good selection of Dublin sodas. Fun old general store feel. The shops had things like candles, soaps, lotions, wood furniture, leather bags and cute knick knacks. This was the Lipan location, not Mineral Wells.

Google
Love the food & come often. We showed up at 8:05 to eat (closes at 9) before going to the haunted house. They were cleaning which was is always a plus but someone turned the lights off to portray closed and we had to ask and then another lady just kept mopping front of us (literally at the register) while looking for what we wanted and it was just odd. Felt like a big inconvenience

Eric L.

Google
We enjoyed the atmosphere and thought the food was pretty good. What I really liked with the bbq was the pickled green tomatoes. They are so good you can buy them by the gallon! Portions were a little smaller than expected.

john T.

Google
Great food with awesome, attentive staffing that explain everything they got going. Inside area has jarred products, spices, candy in it.

Penny S.

Google
First timer here, an it was good! Mac n cheese was creamy, banana pudding wasn't gritty, the loaded potatoe salad was a meal alone, the pulled pork sandwhich hit the spot, and the hotdogs are house made and absolutely delicious!! They offer a pickled bar and goodies as well. Will definitely be returning to try other menu options.

Yelp
Great tasting brisket, large portions, good barbecue sauce, really good sides and desserts! All with great customer service. This will be a stopping point for us now.
google avatar

Ara N.

Yelp
Love this place! I love walking into a place and you feel like you always belonged there. The customer service was phenomenal. The food was delicious. I had a two meat plate -so good and the portions were generous. I didn't try the dessert because I was stuffed but I saw a lot of people ordering cookies and ice cream afterwards. They also have a small shop to buy seasonings, rubs or salsa. If you're in Mineral Wells, stop by. Your feel good restaurant

Charles G.

Yelp
Best bbq around. Either store is great with some of the best food anywhere Their sauce is some of the best and fried pies are fantastic.
google avatar

Lindsay M.

Yelp
Great spot! Was wanting some spare ribs and this place isn't amazing! Cute place has lots of pickled jars for sale of all sorts of stuff. I had the spare ribs with mac n cheese and jalapeno cornbread and tater salad absolutely delicious!!! Service was fantastic! Will definitely be back

Betty P.

Yelp
Asked for moist sliced beef sandwich. Got sliced beef that was dry, hard and mostly cut with the grain. Not much flavor other than smoke. Potato salad was ok, a little sweet. Onions, pickles & jalapeños were very good. Banana pudding was not good. Made with premade boxed pudding, not home made. Bathroom could us a good cleaning. I would not eat here again. Very disappointed.

Rick R.

Yelp
Fun place to checkout, it's got a classic feel and small style country store. I ate here with some co-workers and we had a sampling of the menu. The chicken tasted good but was very dry. The shining dish was their baked tater salad, it was excellent! It's worth coming back just for that dish. The pulled pork was ok. The brisket had an off flavor which seemed to not be cooked with wood or it could have been cooked a couple or few days prior. It just was not like a normal Texas BBQ place on taste or quality. The people are great and easy to work with.
google avatar

Beth G.

Yelp
The place is close to our hotel and the food was pretty good. The mac n cheese was super fresh and the hot tater salad was sooo yummy. The pickled green tomatoes were addicting. I wanted to buy a jar but they were sold out.
google avatar

Katy B.

Yelp
My sister and I had dinner here the other night. She had the chicken salad sandwich and loved it. I had the loaded potato with chopped brisket. The only complaint about the food is that my potato could have been cooked a bit more. The service was understated but efficient and the atmosphere much the same. Easy place to visit with someone as there is no noisy television or music to compete with to hold a conversation.
google avatar

Ed G.

Yelp
Great food once again. We stopped in for dinner and enjoyed the chopped brisket with mac and cheese, smokehouse corn, and jalapeño cornbread. The food was delicious and the employees were kind.
google avatar

Cas I.

Yelp
Damn good BBQ. Love the rub and took some home for my own briskets.. get a fried pie when you're done. You won't regret it!!

Melissa G.

Yelp
The chopped BBQ was very good, one lady had a soggy bun. The only issue i had was the BBQ beans, I was expecting more of a pork and beans with BBQ sauce, but instead I got ranch style beans, so I wasn't too impressed with the side.
google avatar

Ben C.

Yelp
Food was great! Baked tater salad was my favorite. The meat could use a little more smoke.

Lindey B.

Yelp
If you like your food microwaved this is the place for you. If you like to eat with flies this is the place for you. If you want your table order to come out at separate times spanning over 30 minutes forcing everyone to eat at different times this is the place for you. Maybe they were having an off day but the food was barely warm, the service was horrible, and some of their menu items listed as "smoked" clearly were not. You should not call yourself a bbq joint if you toss hot links in the microwave before serving them to your customer. And don't forget the flies! they really add to the atmosphere.
google avatar

Heather D.

Yelp
Excellent little bbq spot! The turkey is so good, the sausage wasn't really smoked I would say but it had a good flavor. Hand pies and sweet tea are 10/10 and the beans and potato salad are homemade goodness! I would say the potato salad is a lot like Rudy's bbq..and the beans have brisket in them.
google avatar

Suzanne W.

Yelp
Pretty good Bbq. We had chopped brisket and sides. One of the ladies turned down the music for us because it was loud and we were the only ones in restaurant. We didn't ask her to, she asked us if we wanted her to. I thought that was nice.
google avatar

Terri C.

Yelp
The food was delicious & staff was personable & the prices were great. Great little area of Jarred jam & veggies & old fashion candy.
google avatar

Lisa H.

Yelp
First time customers. No greeting. No idea where to start. Ordered 3 meat with ribs, brisket and turkey, natty beans, potato salad and jalapeño cornbread. Ordered a 2 meat with ribs and jalapeño sausage, red beans, potato salad and toast. 2 meat came with 2 ribs or actually the end of a rack which is not edible and 1 rib with dry oversauced salty meat. The jalapeño sausage was gray in color and cold. No flavor. The brisket came in a chunk of small slices and was edible. Ribs were old and dried. Turkey was edible. No jalapeño cornbread was served. Food was brought out in to go containers even though we were eating inside and other customers were served like a dine in experience. The banana pudding was not edible and I haven't tried the apricot hand pie yet. Don't have high hopes but we shall see

Yelp
Excellent barbecue and friendly service await you at this 2nd outpost of the famed Natty Flats on the US281 in Lipan. We have been to both locations, and the food is as good here as there. I had the small bologna sandwich, which was one thick 1/2-inch slice of delicious house-smoked bologna on buttered and grilled hamburger bun. The large sandwich is 2 slices - one inch of bologna - which would have been way too much for me. The small was perfectly sized, and the smoke and meat was perfectly balanced. The chopped brisket plate comes with a generous portion of well chopped tender, juicy brisket, with plenty of crusty smoke ring bits mixed in. Plates come with 2 sides. We tried the Mac and cheese which was very good, but the very bland green beans needed salt and pepper!! Oops! The smoked bologna plate is 2 thick slices of smoked bologna, thoughtfully sliced into 1/2-inch batons, so you can eat it easily. Baked potato salad was a delicious mix of potatoes, sour cream, bacon bits and cheese - super yum! Order at the counter and have a seat in the charmingly rustic dining room while you wait for them to call your name. After dinner, grab a homemade cookie or hand pie, OR indulge in vintage candy bars - Val-O Milk and Cherry Mash are both the delicious! 5 smoked bologna always hits the spot stars!

Liz P.

Yelp
Service.... Better organized jn getting orders ... employees seemed disorganized...30 minutes to get an order with 2 people ahead is too long to wait.. need a better system! The jalapeño sausage was dry not much flavor and was not hot at all the sides were not that interesting not much flavor
google avatar

Yelp
I was super disappointed with our experience here. The service was really slow, or order was wrong, and the food was struggling to reach "average". The ribs were ok but had very little smoke on them. The turkey was terrible. I actually watched the guy making our order heat it up in the microwave. The sausage was a nice surprise and I really enjoyed it. The Natty Flats BBQ beans were unique and very flavorful.

Brian K.

Yelp
Great little place with really good selection of food. Everything we ordered was great. Ice tea was good too. Friendly services. Red and white tablecloth to go with wooden step stools as chairs. Overall you can't go wrong here and everything is portioned just right.

Alek C.

Yelp
The food is great, the sauces are delicious, good choices. The services was great, an all female staffs who were all sweet and helpful. The the ambience was very appropriate, quintessential Texas southern BBQ joint.
google avatar

Mel N.

Yelp
Giant menu posted outside, have outdoor seating, and a drive thru. Mid afternoon on a weekend was not busy. But then it got REALLY busy around 3. There ended up being a line almost out the door (with no social distancing spacing). I wonder if it was an anomaly. Prices are reasonable. There's a choice between a. Large and small sandwich. There's pictures of the size at the register. Serve yourself for pickles, onions, and assorted peppers. Got the large sliced brisket sandwich ($6) and a small side of cole slaw and Mac n cheese ($3 each). Pass on the Mac n cheese; nothing special about it. The cole slaw was good though. The sandwich itself was fine, but nothing special. The brisket was really lean, so felt kind of dry if you didn't have BBQ sauce. Found myself dipping it in sauce over and over. Still a decent place to stop at if you're in town, but I wasn't wow'ed.
google avatar

Brianne D.

Yelp
This is THE BEST bbq I've ever had. The bun is toasted in butter, the bbq is tender and flavorful, the sauce is perfection. I've gone here 2x and only tried two sides, the coleslaw and Mac n cheese and both were to die for. The coleslaw is full of flavor and a delight. The mac n cheese is creamy and full of garlic flavor. I wish this place was closer to me because I would be there ever week! On top of the great bbq it sits in a cool little town with lots to do!
google avatar

Crystal B.

Yelp
I've been in Texas for 5 years now. I have finally found bbq that I love! And the baked potato salad is soooo good. I also love their pickled tomatoes.

Boo W.

Yelp
Good barbecue and some interesting side dishes, like the baked potato salad and Natty Flat beans. They have a wide variety of desserts also. Use caution when sitting down at the tables, the wooden stools could be hazardous.
google avatar

Katy R.

Yelp
First impressions were a mixed experience. Staff was friendly and helpful at items to pick from the menu but the food in the cooler wasn't an appetizing view with a drippy condenser dripping water near the side items stored in the glass front cooler. Rolled with it and ordered a 2 meat plate with ribs and brisket, the recommended potato salad and some brisket beans. Snagged some banana pudding for dessert. Once we payed we walked thru an adorable little "store" offering everything from the famed Mineral wells Crazy water, canned pickles, Jams, snacks, candy and more desserts like cobbler and cookies. The seating area was adorable. Decorated well and very very clean. The food was excellent and we were very surprised that the brisket beans had literally a pile of brisket on top (was expecting a little mixed in but noooope!). All and all really enjoyed this spot as a quick stop when in Mineral Wells.

Robert S.

Yelp
I recommend either the sliced brisket (plate or sandwich) or the campfire tacos with brisket. Great pickle/onion/pepper bar to spice up your meal. We've always had great service. I don't understand why they automatically ask you for a "tip" when you pay...then don't even deliver your food to your table. Nobody comes around to refill your drinks - what would the tip be for? Just a pet peeve of mine, I guess. But, I keep going back because the food is terrific and affordable.

Steve H.

Yelp
Looked good. Smelled good. However, we had called ahead about the ability to purchase a gift certificate for a family who had lost their mother but when we arrived, they had no gift certificates available to print and said we could come back tomorrow. Didn't work for somebody come from out of town. They were very apologetic, but it did not solve the situation.
google avatar

Curry C.

Yelp
They have some of the best bbq in town and awesome pies (buttermilk is my personal favorite) and other desserts. Our church is across the street and it is a great spot for after service. It's a little pricey but the atmosphere is great and everything on the menu is delicious. People are greta and they have jellies and jams and a candy selection. Great place to eat but the expense is the only downside.
google avatar

Garry H.

Yelp
Well, of course I found it on Yelp. You know, lately I decide where to eat mostly by the pictures. The pics of the desserts brought me here. Order up front, have a sit, come get it when it's ready. Let me say up front, I'm not a BBQ snob. In fact, BBQ is not one of my go to foods. I can take it or leave it. 99.5% of all BBQ restaurants taste the same to me. That said, this place was good. Not great, but good. Brisket and sausage were average to me, but I did like the turkey. The price was great. They didn't overcharge like most places. A 3 meat plate with 2 sides was $13.95. Plenty of good food for the price. Ok, on to the desserts! Too stuffed to enjoy here, I took fried pies and pecan cobbler home. I especially liked the buttermilk fried pie. The strawberry cream cheese fried pies and the pecan cobbler were both good. I definitely recommend you try Natty Flat for some good BBQ. And bring me a buttermilk fried pie!

Cheryl L.

Yelp
We stopped here for lunch on a trip and I got the pulled pork sandwich. It was generous, tender, not at all dry and quite delicious. My hubby got the brisket sandwich and said it was great. The staff was very nice and the atmosphere was very classic bbq joint. The desserts looked mouthwatering. Wish I would have had room.

Walt S.

Yelp
First bbq place I stooped at after moving back to Texas. Food was good, not great. Brisket was average, sausage was ok, chicken was good. Sides were ok, but, I can make better. It's OK, of you just need bbq. Pricey, but most bbq is now. Service was good.

Meredith M.

Yelp
Great stop in Mineral Wells! The meats were cooked perfectly and the sides were awesome. The staff is also super helpful and nice as well! Loved their dining area.

Ya Boi L.

Yelp
Top 3 barbecue in Texas. Locally owned and super nice workers. Drive through is also nice

Nancy M.

Yelp
We were coming back home through Mineral Wells and Yelped lunch options yesterday. We saw Natty Flats with only 11 reviews and decided to roll the dice. SUCH a great surprise! Cute interior and little gift shop with classic candies sold by the each and a wall of local jams, pickled eggs, etc. We ordered carryout and we got the Carolina dog, side of red beans, side of mac n cheese, hot link sandwich and a fried peach pie. Let's start with the most important part first - the peach pie. Homemade and made with love. The crust is light yet rich and flaky (lil glaze too) and makes angels cry. SO delicious. Beans were perfectly cooked and well seasoned. Hot link was good and the shredded pork + cole slaw and tangy sauce on the dog/bun was . What goes well with a Carolina dog - - ice cold strawberry lemonade.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
Figured I'd give it a shot. Interesting store but the brisket was lacking. Not my speed. I'll stick to Cooper's.
google avatar

Lawrence S.

Yelp
The barbecue is really really good quality and the service is excellent !! Most barbecue places are so expensive-- this one is affordable. And don't pass up on the homemade pie
google avatar

Thomas M.

Yelp
Great small town BBQ. Friendly staff. Lots of options. I had the Ribs & Jalapeño sausage. Ribs were good. Sausage was really good. Worth stopping by if you're in the area.
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
Great customer service and yummy food. The young man who served us was wonderful and knowledgeable about the food. My husband had the sausage and sliced brisket. He liked it. The Carolina bbq sauce is the best. Potato salad yummy. I had the baked potato with chopped brisket and it was perfect with their sauce. The desserts are top notch.
google avatar

Rusty Y.

Yelp
I've stopped here twice going through town, both times had a great experience. Food is simple but really good, I'm stuck in my ways and had chopped beef tater salad and banner pudding. Both times food was great and their bbq sauce is great
google avatar

Charlie B.

Yelp
Very nice staff. Food is fast, very innovative and well rounded menu. Smokehouse has many more options than the traditional BBQ place. Seats about 30 people. Low volume country music plays while you eat. Very chill place.
google avatar

Jw M.

Yelp
This place is so cool and fantastic. Great bbq, wonderful bakery and a TON of canned/jarred selections. I had the three meat plate and all three choices were good. The sausage is homemade and fantastic. I had the brisket beans and potato casserole and they both were unbelievable. I'll stop by every time I am passing through town. Throughly impressed. Thank you!

Aubrey P.

Yelp
Great food! Friendly service! I definitely recommend the pickled tomatoes and the Carolina dog!
google avatar

Sue S.

Yelp
This was the best smoked turkey I have ever had. Our whole family loved it. Thanks, Natty Flat!
google avatar

Danny C.

Yelp
Thank you for giving this Florida Firefighter and great Texas BBQ! This is what I expect. Great cowboy beans. Well done!

Brian F.

Yelp
Yummy chicken and pulled pork sandwich. Coleslaw potato salad and tater side was delicious. Perfect treat after long day on the lake. And friendly service. Can't wait to try the blackberry cobbler (they also have pecan and peach and other desserts) :)

Diane L.

Yelp
This used to be one of our favorite places to eat. The past two times were not very good. Meat very dry and plain, the hand pies are gross. Only thing still good is the baked potato salad. Yesterday they could not even get our order right and for almost thirty dollars that is not acceptable anymore. Will find another BBQ place to eat.
google avatar

Michele S.

Yelp
We've eaten at a lot of BBQ places in and around Abilene, but this is the one gem that is WORTH the trip to Mineral Wells, TX to eat at. I'm one that always looks for a special dish and this place had all the BBQ favorites in one dish. I highly recommend the Smokehouse Dog or the Carolina Dog. Also order the loaded potato salad for your side. The shop is also great for all pickled veggies and jams. This is an amazing place so come and see the friendly staff at Natty's. Tell them Abilene sent you!!!
