How to See the Northern Lights in Canada

"I recommend the Northern Lights & Arctic Exploration tour from Natural Habitats Adventures — a seven-night trip to Churchill that includes a stay in the company's proprietary Aurora Pod with 360-degree views of the sky." - Stefanie Waldek Stefanie Waldek Stefanie Waldek is a space, travel, and design journalist with expertise in aviation, meteorology, and polar regions. We could not have asked for a better adventure. I’m not one to travel in groups or let anyone else plan a trip for me, but they knocked it out of the park! From the person helping us book, Amanda, to the tour guides Eric and Fernando, they provided a truly unforgettable experience. Our particular adventure was visiting the Monarchs in Mexico. Words can’t properly describe how perfect every single detail was. We haven’t even gotten home yet and we are already planning 2 more trips! If you love nature and conservation, look no further!

Just retured from Mexico (Angangueo and Jungapeo) to see the Monarch Butterflies. Our guides were phenomenal and gave us a complete package of seeing the butterflies, informing us about sustainability, conservation and helping the locals by educating them to help with reforestation. Traveling up the mountain to 11,000 feet was challenging, but worth the effort.

Just got back from a 10 day Costa Rica trip. Had an absolutely amazing time. Everything was seamless, and our guide was fantastic. Part of the trip included a stay at the Osa Peninsula, which is on both the BBC's and the NYT's list of places to visit in 2026! If you love flora and fauna, this trip will NOT disappoint. The people everywhere were so welcoming and nice as well. I highly recommend this trip with NatHab.

We recently returned from our second NatHab trip. The first trip was international and second was domestic. Both were great. NatHab makes sure that each traveler is well informed prior to leaving, then basically "holds your hand" as soon as you get off of your plane (or other transportation). They are focused on making sure all travelers are as comfortable as possible while enjoying the adventure. These trips are not inexpensive but is justified by the service. If we choose to take another adventure, we will consider NatHab first.

Have been to 3 amazing Nat Hab trips: Mexico to see the Monarch butterflies, Churchill, Canada to watch polar bears and learn about that unique community and the trip to Peru for travels along the Amazon with rain forest hikes. All amazing! Highly recommend Nat Hab trips and their focus on natural environment preservation and also how they support the communities at these locations.

Nat Hab is a first class tour operator that prides itself in operating the first (and perhaps only) zero carbon emission tour boat in the Galapagos. Their environmental ethic, considerable donations to and associations with the World Wildlife Fund are impressive. They seem to think of everything in ordre to provide an incredible experience for their guests. The Galapagos trip (graduation gift for my daughter) was my only Nat Hab experience. However, other quests aboard the Petrel had glowing recollections about many other Nat Hab trips. I would recommend them to friends, colleagues, and family without hesitation. The naturalists/guides that accompanied us on our recent Galapagos adventures were extremely helpful, always in good humor, and passionate about the flora, fauna, geology, and history of the islands.

We just came back from a Natural Habitat trip to Costa Rica, it was awesome! The people NatHab employed as our expedition leader and our guide were locals and super knowledgeable people. Very professional, fun, and they showed so much contagious passion for their work and nature, just great people! The service, food and lodging were amazing, and we saw so much! NatHab also truly supports locals as they took us to some small, locally owned businesses and restaurants when possible. They were all great, and the service was excellent! It was nice to learn about Costa Rica and its people and all the things they are all doing for conservation of the rainforest and everything that depends on it. NatHab is truly a topnotch adventure company that is so supportive of conservation efforts in the places they take you to. This was our third trip with NatHab and every time, from requesting information about a particular trip to coming home, their service has always been excellent. We plan to go with them on our next adventure again!

We've taken two trips with Nat Hab over the years and we can't wait to take more trips with them. The NatHab team keeps all promises and delivers outstanding adventures. We've been on the Galapagos catamaran trip and the Nepal/Bhutan trip. Both were simply amazing. NatHab subscribes to the "surprise and delight" school of customer service. They care for your every need. They provide beautiful lodgings and fun and fascinating cultural and wildlife explorations. Our fave travel company by far. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I've traveled with Nat Hab to Botswana and Alaska Bear Camp on two separate occassions. Each time, the trip exceeded my expectations. Both immersed me among fascinating wildlife. On each trip, we stayed at superlative places, from Nat Hab's Alaska Bear Camp to a variety of safari camps in Botswana. My guide on each trip was SO knowledgeable. They were also friendly, attentive, and super engaging.

Yelp
I've traveled with natural habitats two times and both were fantastic. I can't see enough good things about how organized and friendly they are. They certainly know their stuff and know all about the animals and the surroundings

Chuck E.

Yelp
We tried to book a trip to Alaska and by the time we understood internal air the cost of the trip went up more than 25%. Their disclosure of included expenses and excluded expense is not clear and is misleading. They wasted our time. To expensive. Look elsewhere.

Yelp
We took two adventures with NatHab. On the high end in terms of expense but really only middle of the road in terms of experience. They leave a lot on the hired local guides without a lot of options. We did the primate trekking and there was a lot of down time while the great migration trip was filled each day. We have used a number of high end agencies and this is one we probably will not use again.

Yelp
The company is efficient, helpful and professional starting with the first phone call. The staff gives excellent customer service, hires the best guides, and will help plan your trip with flight and hotel reservations. I traveled with them for ten trips, and hope to do more in the future.

Yelp
I recently returned from the Classic Polar Bear Adventure in Manitoba , run by Natural Habitat Adventures. It was my first trip with this group, and while there were many reasons I was happy I went,I am unlikely to travel with them again, primarily because as a single traveler it was not a good value. My trip was listed as a seven day adventure , but it was really only a five day excursion . The first day began at 7:00PM with a welcome dinner , and the last day consisted only of a buffet breakfast, followed by transportation to the airport. The first and last nights were spent at the Fort Garry a lovely , well located hotel in Winnipeg, but the accommodations in Churchill were substandard at best. The inn in Churchill was dated , not very comfortable and not especially clean . My biggest complaint was the rooms were not cleaned during our stay ( trash was emptied twice and beds were made twice- ) Meals were plentiful but very basic and tasteless .There was also quite a lot of downtime spent in the rover for no reason I could identify , other than there was nothing else to do in Churchill .After a substantial amount of wildlife viewing , we remained confined to the rover( approx 8 hours per day spent on this vehicle ) This trip could have easily been consolidated into 5 days at a substantially lower cost. The best features of the trip were the guide , the other friendly, helpful Nat Hab staff members, ie drivers, two talks provided by indigenous people and one presentation at the Polar Bear research facility in Churchill, and of course the very cooperative Polar Bears who were plentiful . In addition , another positive to consider is that everyone with Natural Habitat was easy to work with , extremely helpful , knowledgeable and professional. If you have a great desire to see Polar Bears and to do something extraordinary , this may be the trip for you. I neglected to mention that a visit to the Human Rights Museum in Winnipeg , which I took solo , is well worth your time .

Yelp
I recently traveled with Natural Habitat to Tanzania. We were there for the Great Migration, but instead saw less of the big herds we expected, and more cats. Our first tented camp was in Namiri Plains, where many lions and cheetahs reside. That's how I got some the photos with the ever-playful cheetah cubs jumping on the hood of our vehicles. The second tented camp we stayed at was a NatHab Migration Base Camp that moves with the migration. It moves a few times of year. We were a little disappointed that the herds were back in Namiri Plains (which we had just left) for the migration camp. We only found this out when leaving and chatting with other travelers around us waiting for the flight out who had seen the big herds there. This isn't a dig at NatHab; it's just what happen, and sometimes these things can't be predicted. We still saw plenty of animals and returned with fond memories and great photos. We saw elephants rolling in the mud and rubbing against trees. We were able to have a few breakfasts and lunches on the Serengeti, which was particularly nice since elephants, lions, and giraffe were usually wandering around in the distance. Our guide and our two drivers were phenomenal. There were 12 people in the group, with 6 people to a vehicle. They would make sure to move the land cruisers so we had the best light and angle for our photos. We weren't on the photo tour, yet still our guides were knowledgeable about photography and gave us a few pointers. The camps we stayed at had all the necessities. If you're looking for the most luxurious experience with only 5 star resorts, NatHab is probably not your tour company. However, if you're looking for a reasonably priced trip with the amenities you'll need and especially knowledgeable guides, then NatHab has got you covered. They are also a partner of WWF. One of the best aspects of our safari was that for the most part we were not in areas congested with tons of vehicles. When we found elephants or lions, maybe only one other vehicle would appear and it was usually from the camp we were staying at.

Yelp
I've traveled with NatHab a number of times. Never disappointed in any respect. I recently had a situation where I needed to cancel a upcoming trip. They were more than accommodating in moving my deposit to another trip. A first-class company!

Yelp
Natural Habitat runs great adventure tours into wilderness areas. The guides are knowledgeable, helpful, and easy to work with during the planning and running of the trip. This company attracts like-minded nature travelers, so you end up enjoying the trip even more because of the fun people you are traveling with. This is my 3rd trip with them, and I recommend them to future travelers.

Yelp
Booked a trip to the Galapagos and Machu Picchu through Natural Habitat Adventures. Probably the best vacation of my life. The 8-cabin catarmaran was beautiful with roomy cabins. Only 16 travelers. The crew was polite and very helpful. Great food! The guides for both the Galapagos and Machu Picchu were outstanding. They were very knowledgeable about the region, the flora, and fauna. This was a photographer's dream trip. I took over 800 photos and used a GoPro for snorkeling. I'm booking our next adventure with Nat Hab!

Yelp
We went on the Secluded Botswana Safari this last July/August. We were both concerned about the trip meeting our expectations because it was number one on our bucket list. I am thrilled to report that it far exceeded our expectations. The variety and quantity of animals was absolutely amazing. Our expedition leader (i.e. "guide") was knowledgeable beyond words. He knew the answer to all questions, could track so that we experienced every animal that we wanted to see and made us feel extremely safe while still experiencing close interactions. Also traveling with us was a safari coordinator who made sure that all our needs were met at the camps. The travel, transfers, etc. were flawless. The accommodations and food at the camps were terrific. I had never "camped" before so I was a little concerned about the accommodations. If you have any concern, be sure to look at the pictures. The accommodations were lovely and comfortable. My husband and I spent years in the hotel industry so we were especially impressed by the quality of the food in the "middle of nowhere". It is hard to imagine the logistics necessary to create such an amazing experience. Wendy, our Adventure Specialist at Natural Habitat, was extremely responsive and made sure that any and all concerns were addressed. If you are considering an African safari experience, we strongly recommend Natural Habitat Adventures. It was the trip of a lifetime and beyond description. In fact, so much so, we have already booked our next adventure to Uganda and Rwanda for the Ultimate Gorilla Safari.

Yelp
We've traveled with Natural Habitat Adventures five times and it just keeps getting better, if possible! Their service in planning the trips is exceptional. When you call, a person answers the phone, no phone tree. Your questions are always answered quickly. Our guides have always been wonderful, the accommodations and food terrific, the groups small. Altho the prices seem high, we've always felt that we've gotten every penny's worth. Our recent trip to Uganda to see the mountain gorillas was amazing. Our guide, Francis Kyaligonza went out of his way to make sure we had the best experience possible. By the end of the trip, he felt like a member of the family! It's hard to describe how amazing it was to stand 10 feet away from these animals: worth the hike up the hill! A once in a lifetime experience! Our other trips to Namibia, Botswana, Costa Rica, the Galapagos and Machu Picchu and Yellowstone were equally as good. It's hard to pick a favorite! My suggestion? Use this company!
