Natural History Museum

Natural History Museum – Port Louis A calm and quiet spot for a short visit. The museum features a small exhibition of animals and a section on World War II upstairs. Entry is free, and it took us about 30 minutes to explore everything. A simple yet interesting stop if you're in the area.

It’s amazing that the museum is free of charge. The exhibition is simple, but there is definitely plenty to see and read. It was really interesting! What is truly striking is the incredible story of the dodo. It’s remarkable how the islanders managed to turn this tragedy — the story of human cruelty, greed, and selfishness — into a beautiful legend, where the dodo appears on their national currency and has become a national symbol. As I read about the extinction of this big, kind bird, I can’t help but feel deeply ashamed for humanity. It seems to me that penguins might be next — just as defenseless and peaceful, and of no real interest to us for breeding as meat or feathers.

The museum exhibits various replica of fauna and flora. The museum is the oldest in Mauritius. The museum building was constructed in 1880. On 22 December 2021, Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth inaugurated the Mauritian Ex-Servicemen's World War I and World War II Tribute Gallery inside the museum.

Important place for nature lovers. This museum exhibits the complete skeleton of Dodo bird and a wide collection of other species. Entrance is free.

Such an amazing museum! We saw plenty of shells and beautiful species of fish, sun fish, Marlin, Whales, Dolphins and sharks. We also saw the symbol of Mauritius - the Dodo bird. It's really interesting. At the second floor, there is a exposition of The World War I and II. Ticket is for free. It takes around 20-30 minutes.

A small space that really ought to have better funding given the unique flora and fauna of Mauritius, but still a nice informative space. Great for kids and one of the few places in the world to see a complete Dodo skeleton. The surrounding area also has some fascinating parks and statues to get to know the history of Port Louis better

The museum could use some love, but if you know mauritius. At least it's free and it gives you an idea of what the animals were like back in the day. The original introduction of how Mauritius discovered was interesting, and can be a good escape from the city heat.

It's nice to go and see the history of Dodo bird. The museum is small and old and not too well maintained, but it is worth spending 15 minutes there. The entrance is free.
