How to Swim Responsibly With Sperm Whales in the Caribbean

"This wildlife tour operator runs small, high-end expeditions and organized the author’s sperm-whale swims, pairing international expertise with local partners. Led by underwater cameraman and long-time whale swimmer Patrick Dykstra—whose film work includes a BAFTA-winning segment—the company emphasizes ethical, minimally invasive encounters, inspires strong client loyalty, and supports community initiatives such as helping small-scale fishermen buy more visible gear to reduce ship strikes and ocean trash. Its seven-day experiences are limited to five guests and command a premium price, reflecting the need to plan ahead and secure permits for high-quality, conservation-minded trips." - Maggie Shipstead Maggie Shipstead Maggie Shipstead is a New York Times best-selling and prize-winning novelist, essayist, and travel writer. She has covered destinations and topics ranging from cities to wilderness, tropics to polar regions, and luxury hotels to tents. Travel + Leisure Editorial Guidelines

This was the trip of a life time, the memories, sights and sounds with stay with me for ever. Every aspect was incredible, the Polarfront is an great ship and its team were friendly and professional. The food was a very high standard and they catered for my Gluten intolerance. The expedition guides were full of enthusiasm and information. All the workshops were great, and Graeme the professional photographer was very helpful, fun and produced a stunning video memory of our trip. The scenery, wildlife and hiking was beyond belief. This was a life changing experience for me and I have returned with a new spring in my step and a more positive out look on life. A few photos can not do this trip justice.

I recently returned from an extraordinary journey to Svalbard with Natural World Safaris, and I cannot say enough about how incredible the experience was! From the moment I booked my trip, the team at Natural World Safaris demonstrated exceptional professionalism and care, ensuring every detail was perfect. Svalbard itself is breathtaking, but what made this trip truly unforgettable was the expertise and passion of our Expedition Leaders and the crew of the Kinfish. Their deep knowledge of the Arctic environment, wildlife, and history added immense value to every moment. We had some of the most incredible wildlife encounters imaginable — from spotting polar bears to witnessing majestic walruses, Arctic foxes, and a wide variety of bird species. Each day felt like a unique adventure, and our guide’s ability to read the terrain and locate wildlife was nothing short of extraordinary. The accommodations were comfortable and cozy. The crew ensured that our safety and comfort were prioritized throughout, and the delicious meals served onboard were a delightful surprise — truly gourmet cuisine in such a remote location! Natural World Safaris exceeded all expectations by creating a seamless and enriching experience that I will cherish forever. Their commitment to sustainable and responsible travel was evident in every aspect of the journey, making me feel even more connected to the pristine Arctic environment we were privileged to explore. If you’re considering a trip to the Arctic, look no further than Natural World Safaris. They will provide you with a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will leave you in awe of the natural world! This is my second trip with Natural World Safaris and I already have a third trip planned for February. Thank you for another amazing experience!

This company plans boutique trips to incredible special places across the world. From the instant I booked, I felt taken care of. I barely had to lift a finger to have the most spectacular trip to Svalbard. The quality of the ships they work with, the teams they hire, and the value for what you get is absolutely unmatched. I plan to book with them again next year.

We have just returned from a magical holiday on and around Svalbard. We travelled on MV Kinfish a lovely small ship whose crew were relaxed and very helpful. The food was excellent and plentiful. Our guides, Alex and Piet were full of energy and passion for the beautiful Svalbard scenery and wildlife - they gelled well as a team and offered thier expertise up freely and often. We can’t thank them enough. We were very lucky with the weather and the wildlife and cannot recommend this holiday highly enough.

My husband and I recently returned from a 3 week trip to Borneo and Indonesia arranged by Natural World Safaris. I chose this company because they were able to put a trip together in both countries, Malaysia and Indonesia, when many companies operate in only one of the countries. I am a wildlife biologist and photographer so I wanted to see orangutans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, whale sharks, manta rays, and Komodo dragons. We saw all of those species except the pygmy elephants, but we saw so much more. The jungle lodges we stayed at in Borneo were top notch and the food was great. Our local guides were very knowledgeable and able to locate and identify wildlife species under challenging conditions (i.e. up in the tree canopy, at night, and silhouetted against the sky). We then spent 2 nights in Bali in the Ubud region at a beautiful resort. Part of our trip was a nine day excursion on a Sea Trek voyage. We started in Komodo National Park, traveled to several other islands, and then returned to Komodo. We were on the Katharina, which is a traditional Pinisi boat. The accommodations were good, the food was excellent, and the crew and guide were fantastic. We snorkeled at beautiful reefs, experienced local culture in two villages, swam at a waterfall, helped to restore a coral reef, and had so much fun. It certainly was the trip of a lifetime and we will enjoy the memories for many years to come.

We had an amazing experience traveling with Aurora Expeditions to Antarctica. Just look at the photos, and there are many more! We took the option to fly from, and then back to, Punta Arenas, Chile. This saved us time and the effort of crossing the Drake passage as our adult children could not easily take as much time off. We did have a one day delay due to weather. That is a risk of the flying option. In addition to the normal daily activities, we signed up and paid extra to snorkel while there. It was incredible! We were in the water in our dry suits (see pics) every day. We sometimes just explored the ice and the plant life. But we did swim with seals, penguins and whales not far away. The whales and the penguins were all around us in the water all of our trip (mid-February to March 2). Most meals you could look out the dining room window and see some. Most of the zodiac landings had wildlife there. The place is like another planet. Hard to describe. Ocean, ice, snow, massive glaciers, and a lot of wildlife. The ship, the Greg Mortimer, is super stable, luxurious and modern. The food is buffet at breakfast and lunch and à la Carte at dinner. My wife and I are vegetarians, and they were very accommodating. They would show us the menu in advance and ask if it was acceptable. If not, they were willing to make almost anything for us. Our adult children eat everything and thought the food was very good. Not cheap, but highly recommended. I have mixed feelings about encouraging people to go here as it is truly pristine, but climate change is having its effects. We got the impression that Aurora try and respect the environment through their choices of equipment and where they go.

Amazing trip, lots of wildlife viewings (all wildlife was respected, which is also very important to me), great and knowledgeable staff (always going the extra mile), great food and I really enjoyed the small group!
