I Never Liked the Caribbean—but This Island Made Me Fall in Love With It

"I met Simon Walsh, owner of Nature Island Dive, who opened his shop more than three decades ago and is now pioneering coral rehabilitation—showing me corals with five or six scars from treatment and explaining that the rest of the coral is healthy and spawning; he has also launched a coral bank to preserve dozens of endemic species." - Rachel Chang Rachel Chang Rachel Chang is a travel and pop culture journalist who contributes to Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, Lonely Planet, and more. Wonderful diving experience with Nature Island! We dove with them for 5 days (11 dives) and was impressed by their safety standards, knowledge, communication, and PASSION. They know their stuff and care about their island - and it shows. Simon and Wendy run a great shop and I love diving with Desiree, Kimmy, and Erica. Seamless experience from booking to last dive! Also love that they have a coffee shop for relaxing surface intervals. Dive with Nature Island!!!!

Nature Island Dive is the ideal dive operation for all levels of divers. I highly recommend them!! These folks are very different from the resort diving operations elsewhere since they are actively involved in coral treatment and preservation. Simon and his pros are incredibly knowledgeable about the underwater marine life and they point out tons of critters. Also, they spoil you - they haul the equipment to the boat and do all tank changeovers. Plus, all the best dive sites are near their jetty, so surface intervals are done on land where you can get smoothies and coffee in between dives. Finally, if you want to try free diving - there is a free diving operator in the same building!

Best dive shop in Dominica hands down! This is my 2nd year diving with Nature Island Dive for 7 days with the Reef Chics and I so appreciate their professionalism, passion for protecting the reef, engagement above and below water, and keeping the dives fun for all. Our first day we had some issues with the current picking up mid-dive and our dive guide couldn’t have handled the situation any better to ensure safety for all. Top notch diving. Excellent atmosphere and staff. Highly recommended! Not to mention the work they are doing for coral preservation is simply outstanding. Can’t wait to come back! ❤️

Nature Island Dive is hands down the best dive shop I’ve ever experienced. This isn’t your typical big, crowded dive operation where you’re herded in and out of the water on a schedule. It’s a small-scale, bespoke dive experience that feels more like diving with family than booking a tour. As a photographer, I’m used to being rushed along at other dive shops, but not here. Every dive was tailored to what I wanted—whether that meant hanging out in one spot waiting for a jawfish or exploring at my own pace. No pressure, no rush, just pure diving enjoyment. The boats are small, the groups are small, and between dives, you’re back at the shop for a relaxed surface interval—no bobbing around on a boat for an hour. Plus, all the dive sites are just minutes away. The whole experience is laid-back and personal, the way diving should be. Beyond offering an incredible dive experience, Nature Island Dive is also deeply committed to marine conservation. As stewards of the Soufrière Scotts Head Marine Reserve, they actively support environmental initiatives, including coral restoration efforts in partnership with the local conservation organization, Oceans Forward. Their dedication to protecting and restoring the reef makes diving with them even more meaningful—you’re not just exploring an incredible underwater world, you’re supporting the people who help preserve it. If you’re looking for a rushed, touristy experience, this isn’t the place for you. But if you want top-notch service, incredible diving, and lifelong dive buddies, Nature Island Dive will ruin you for anywhere else. They’ve set the bar, and now I compare every dive vacation to them. Highly recommend! Can’t wait to come back!

I am French, level 1. I have experience of around ten dives. I did two double dives with this club at the end of July/beginning of August 2025. The first two went very well, with an attentive woman instructor who was very strict about safety, and I would give this instructor 5 stars. The second double dive was with another woman instructor. I warned her when I reached 70 bar, she signaled that everything was fine, but did not accompany me or tell me to make my decompression stop. I then warned her that I was running low on air, she said okay, that's all. So I went back to the boat on my own and tried to make my stop on my own, but I had no more air left in my tank and another diver gave me his spare regulator. I went back up to the boat, still unaccompanied. Finally, another member of the club told me that I risked damaging the tank because I had emptied it and it could fill with water. So the problem is that I could have damaged the equipment, but what about the diver's safety? Ultimately, I consider this supervision to have been irresponsible, even dangerous. Zero stars for this instructor.

We had a wonderful time diving with Nature Island Divers. The owner, the guides were all incredibly friendly and professional. The gear was in great condition and the staff would have everything set up and ready for us on the boat, you literally just show up and dive! The dive sites were beautiful and we felt very taken care of by every member of their team. I highly recommend anyone diving in Dominica to dive with these guys. They truly care about the corals and respecting the reef. Thank you!

Thank you Nature Island Dive for another incredible week for the Reef Chics! We chose to return to Dominica for our annual scuba trip and chose to use NID as our dive operation due to their amazing staff! This dive shop is a true family run business full of experienced instructors, divemasters, captains and cafe staff. They work as a team which is exuded through their kind, supportive spirit. Our dives were always briefed with clear details prior to splashing, followed by underwater “tour guides” who pointed out spectacular underwater life. We also enjoyed our surface interval conversations (and laughs) with the staff back at the dive shop… including the cafe that serves up the best smoothies and lattes! See you next time!

Nature Island Dive has the best Caribbean diving that my husband and I have done. And we’ve done a lot of diving! The coral reefs are amazingly healthy thanks in large part to Simon and Wendy and their crew at Nature Island Dive’s incredible conservation efforts. Everyone is so knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. Dez is an awesome dive guide who’s competence really makes you feel taken care of while maintaining a friendly, laid back vibe… and she makes the coolest jewelry out of lionfish! The level of service at this place is unsurpassed in my experience. They truly take care of everything, including washing out your dive gear for you at the end of the day and Sanitizing your suit and your BCD before you head home. This is a true Gem. If you are thinking about diving the Caribbean this is the spot. Do it! You won’t regret it.
