Easter Island Used Its Pandemic Closure to Reinvigorate Its Culture and Traditions — and It's Luring Travelers Back

"Nayara Hangaroa was another good thing to come out of the pandemic. Formerly the Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa, it became a Nayara resort after the island closed in 2020. The new owners have refreshed the rooms and added a well-marked walking route on the property; the roster of guest experiences includes visits with local artists and musicians." - Travel + Leisure Editors

15 Best Resorts in South America: Readers’ Choice Awards 2023 | Condé Nast Traveler

"With 75 rooms and an ocean vista in the center of town, the Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa has it made: The retreat occupies a choice swath of land on the southwestern tip of Easter Island, about a four-and-a-half hour flight from Santiago, and sits just five minutes from the local airport. Aside from its prime location, the hotel's breezy, open-concept layout and sea-view rooms (each outfitted with custom clay baths, crafted by Chilean artisans) help deliver that blissed out vibe—pretty rare for a retreat this close to the action. There are two restaurants and a bar, each of which draw from local seafood and produce, along with Polynesian spices, plus a four-room spa and a pool; but the main event at Hangaroa are the island excursions. Hop on a horse and tour the island, or hitch up for a two-hour sunrise hike in Ahu Tongariki, an ancient ceremonial platform outfitted with 15 giant stone statues. And should you decide to stay put on the pristine beaches of Rapa Nui? Well, that's okay too."

This was what I believe was our first Nayara stay. We had 2 different rooms, 1 and 18. Both were different levels and decent, but the mini-bar situation was confusing, It was not really a mini-bar as most resorts know this to be and they should learn from this. The staff were all super friendly, probably one of the most friendly of any place we have ever been. The on-site travel planning was super on-point. The gym felt neglected but this was not a surprise to me in a place like this, but it was odd that a hotel of this price point did not tend to it properly. The gym was dusty and 3 of the 4 ceiling lights were dead and I had to turn on the lights in it when I got there each morning. The overall food and drink quality was we would expect, good to very good. I thought the breakfast service ended a tad early for my taste. 11am is really the accepted cutoff to me but maybe this was an off-season situation. The hotel is super convenient to the airport and the local areas, all walkable. In their defense, I do not think its possible to get a 5 star rating anywhere in Easter Island but this is a strong 4 for sure.

We recently stayed at the most amazing resort on Easter Island! I highly recommend the Nayara Hangaroa Resort, which has a unique and thorough offering of guest rooms and inclusive tour and dining options. We stayed 3 nights and wished we had stayed longer as there were still additional tours we wished we could have joined. The resort offered many great tour options!||Most important to emphasize, is how truly wonderful all of the staff everywhere at the resort are! From the personalized greeting we received at the Airport, to the detailed hotel welcoming by Christopher, the incredible restaurant service provided by Gabriella and her staff, Maria's smile and helpfulness booking our tours, and the evening chocolates and laundry service by Housekeeping, and many others I wish I could remember by name, the Nayara Hangaroa has a First Class Team across all Departments!||After excellent communication in advance of our trip online with Customer Service, we picked the Discover Package and it worked out perfectly for us, providing us with 3 tours and dinners, an expansive breakfast buffet, and many other benefits. We also purchased a 4th tour, which allowed us to see the majority of the best Moai sites and quarries. We also enjoyed making the short walk from the resort into Hangaroa Town, which we found to be friendly and safe. One evening we walked to see the Sunset over Ahu Tahai, which was spectacular. We visited gift and coffee shops and also had a great lunch at Te Moana along the waterfont. ||It is hard to imagine staying anywhere else on Easter Island other than the Nayara Hangaroa Resort. This was an amazing property to experience!

If you light sleeper, bring earplugs due to roosters everywhere on the island. We are experiencing many joys on world’s most remote Easter Island - from Wild Horses roaming our resort grands to visiting the island’s stunning iconic Moai Statues in the midst of Biblical Sunrises and Sunsets over Moai Heads … The most remote most fascinating and most beautiful Island with 5-star gorgeous resort and spa stay - Easter Island Nayara Hangaroa. Oceanfront volcanic rocks with waves sprayed skyward. Nightly Sunsets are Psychedelic experience. It is totally Amazing what it feels like to be at THE very edge of the world! Logistically most convenient Resort I ever stayed in - all great architecturally beautiful and unique restaurants, bar , spa and terraces and few steps away!!! Beautifully deigned Resort Theater has highest quality local multi drums and other instruments band with dancers of local traditional music and dance performances. Very nice and aesthetically pleasing multi-section designed pool with jets etc SPA Menu is insane with most exotic and unusual massages, body treatments and scrubs. Due to limited stay I picked Bamboo sticks ( different sizes for each part of the body! ) and Coco Cacao Scrub . The quality and skill of therapist if phenomenal. Totally private reservation only prior massage - Sauna, Steam Room and Jacuzzi in Volcanic setting and Absolute Luxury.

Our stay at hotel Nayara Hangaroa was absolutely amazing! From the front desk greeter to the restaurant staff, room service staff and grounds staff. Everyone was extremely friendly, gracious, helpful, and kind. The food was amazing from the breakfast to the dinner and the bar foods that were available into the late evening. We highly recommend hotel Nayara Hangaroa and we would certainly stay with them again if we travel to Rapa Nui.||

Architecture is unique as it is inspired by the local ancient structures. It is not a small hotel and yet gentle on the environment. Stylish bedrooms, with great attention to details. Attentive staff, stars and affectionate dogs make an unprecedented atmosphere. |The restaurant is curated, really impressed by the fish tartare. |For being in a remote island the level of comfort and sophistication is impressive.

The kindness and hospitality begin as soon as you exit the airport and find Elias waiting for you with a lei and a smile, then he loads your bags into the hotel van and whisks you away to such a beautiful hotel and spa. The rooms are generously sized, the breakfast buffet is vast, plentiful, and delicious, the beds are comfortable, and property is neat and tidy. I don't swim, but the pool looks fantastic. The massage I took time for (and so should you) was very well done. Every staff member I encountered was friendly, pleasant, and helpful, even if they didn't speak English so well. Most knew my name (how do they do that?!). The location is perfect - easy walk to the town, and the ocean is literally across the street. I can't imagine staying anywhere else on Easter Island. I recommend this property without hesitation.

Start to finish we really enjoyed everything about this adventure. We had Tico as our guide from start to finish. We were able to enjoy the sunset excursion the first night and the sunrise excursion our last day prior to our flight out. Tico played guitar and sang local songs for us. It made incredible events both romantic and unforgettable. What a way to start and end our trip. We did morning and afternoon excursions our two full days. Anything you choose will be great. So much to see!!!! I would suggest 3-full days so you can go a little slower and enjoy the Hotel and town, which is a short walk away. We were very tired with only 2-full days/3-nights. The hotel was top notch in every way. Rooms, staff, food, and drink were 5-stars all the way.

I recently stayed at Nayara Hangaroa on Easter Island in a Maunga Ocean View Villa. The room was spacious and clean, with a comfortable bed and a view of the ocean. The hotel’s architecture reflects traditional Rapa Nui design and blends into the natural surroundings. However, if you look closely, the taps and some fixtures are a bit dated. The shower curtain smells a bit. ||The minibar included soft drinks and beer, but it was only restocked once during the stay. Not per day. However, there was a water refill station available, which was convenient.||Breakfast offered a variety of options, but the fruit selection was limited. Some fruits appeared to be canned, was hoping for more fresh fruits selections and there were not even bananas.||Dinner at Poerava Restaurant was underwhelming. The food lacked flavor, and the pineapple tarte Tatin dessert tasted as though it had been previously frozen. Additionally, the menu offered limited options for non-seafood eaters, which made it challenging to find satisfying alternatives. ||The hotel’s location was convenient, close to town and sunset spots. Airport transfer which was included was handy and welcoming. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout the stay. We booked the dream package which included US$200 credit that can be used on restaurants and spa. However, doesn’t look like all the reception staff aware of this. We were charged and not deducted from final bill and we o unrealised after we have settled and at the airport leaving. So we had to go through the hassle to email. They resolved in the end but make sure you check before paying!
