On the Grid : Communist’s Daughter

"Communist’s Daughter is somewhat easy to miss considering the bar has kept the old signage for Nazare Snack Bar. However, the small sign in the window indicates that you have found Dundas West’s best and favourite hole in the wall bar. There is a small menu available and the drinks are fairly cheap. There’s a laid-back musical vibe to the place, the bartender switching out vinyls from a dusty record player. In the evenings you can often catch bands playing in the front window and there’s an amazing jukebox located at the back of the bar. The Communist’s Daughter is the place to go when you want to feel like you’re home." - Sovereign State

I can not believe this place has 1 star. It was sooooool fun!!!!!!! Amazing service. Amazing atmosphere. The live bad was chatting with us. The staff was chatting with us. No one rushed us. It was so much fun. We planned to stay for one beer and stayed the whole night. Honestly if you were offended I think this says more about you than the bar.

A true staple in my weekly life … this Bar has brought me more laughs and more moments of clarity than anywhere else that I’ve been in the Toronto area and or the entire world as a whole. This bar holds a special place in my heart and I encourage anybody with a vinyl interest to come on a Monday and explore what it’s really like to be part of an entire democracy. Viva la MLJ.

On Saturday they play live music from 4pm to 7pm. It has such a great atmosphere. A cozy feeling with exceptional musicians signing and performing to keep it entertaining.

Terrible service, terrible staff. Go spend your money somewhere else. The staff/owner was very rude and just made the assumption that my friends and i weren’t going to order and refused us service because we were looking at our phones too much and weren’t making that much eye contact which makes him nervous apparently- Even though my friends and i were just looking at our phones for the menu and we did respond the two times he came over to our table. Moreover, one of us has already ordered a drink the first time and on the second time he just tells us he would ask us to leave if we don’t order more than $20. Finally when we’ve decided on what to order, he just refused us service. Mind you we didn’t take too long to decide either. We took 10-15 min at most. I am appalled that that’s how the staff decided to approach the situation. My friends and i just decided to leave and we went somewhere else with better service.

I had the misfortune of visiting this bar, otherwise known as the “Communist’s Daughter”. I have never in my life been on the receiving end of such incredibly poor service. It doesn’t even warrant being called “customer service”, it was just rude and nasty. After asking for separate bills and then receiving our bills without comment, our friend group began to pay. My first friend paid and tipped 18%. Then, as the rest of us waited to pay our bills, we were suddenly berated by the server who told us that “we should pay our bill together, it’s the adult thing to do”, “clearly you’ve never worked in the service industry”, “never come back here”, and then proceeded to walk back to the bar and tell other patrons that it was our fault their drinks were taking so long. Keep in mind that she was not working alone and that the bar was far from slammed. After being chastised like children in front of other patrons, the rest of our group (reasonably) chose to not tip. My friend explained, as we were leaving, that we would have been happy to pay one bill if it was that much of an inconvenience, to which we were told that “we should have said something”. Apparently the onus was on us? Unfortunately, no one in our group was bestowed with the gift of mind reading. Considering everyone in our group actually has spent, cumulatively, years of experience in the service industry, our collective conclusion is that this was, hands down, our worst service experience. This particular server is undoubtedly not suited to work in the industry given her temperament and nonexistent manners.

We walked in before an incredible performance from the staff and invited band.in between songs he served me a tequila soda. It was easily the highlight of my month. Can’t recommend this place enough!

One of my fave neighbourhood hangouts. The Daughter keeps the old Dundas West vibe alive even as the O$$ington strip explodes... even if the staff ignores you a little, get over yourself and just order a drink. The frequent live music is such a bonus.
