16 Off the Beaten Path Attractions in Amsterdam (Updated 2025)

"Once an industrial shipyard, NDSM Wharf has been transformed into a lively cultural and artist space with urban beaches, a crane-turned hotel, restaurants and cafes in converted greenhouses and shipping containers, the STRAAT street-art museum, an arcade bar, evening beach film screenings, monthly flea markets, electronic music parties, and a perpetually creative atmosphere — there’s always something interesting happening." - Matthew Kepnes

Nice place to glimpse a different side of Amsterdam, the wharf is easily reachable from Centraal by free ferry. The ferry journey itself is beautiful too and at the wharf there are museums, restaurants and cafes and some really cool graffiti.

Totally worth a visit! The area has lots of street art from artists around the world and a vibe that’s really different from the center of Amsterdam. You can get there by a free ferry near Central Station. There are lots of cafés and restaurants around, Pllek is a great spot with a nice view and a relaxed vibe.

I totally love this area! It’s got such a cool vibe — loads of street art and cute little cafés around. Inside, it’s this massive warehouse with creative workshops and rotating exhibitions. Super modern, artsy, and full of political energy.

Came for the IJ-Hallen flea market. Arrived before 11am and it got even more crowded in the afternoon. If you are interested in vintage clothes, leather jackets, jeans, hoodies, cameras, bags, home decorations, souvenirs and so on, definitely come check it out while they are still here. There are food stalls and paid toilets, which were very busy.

Epic venue for electronic parties such as DGTL. The industrial site makes it atmospheric and unique. Good toilets and food options. The beer is a rip off but what to do...

This place has an incredible vibe and is worth visiting while in Amsterdam. Its artsy industrial style will excite you, and every corner feels like another mystery. Give it a go!

We attended the Bansky exhibition at NDSM what a cool venue. It was really warm on Saturday so the venue was warm as well. Very cool place though to visit. Afterwards we popped next door to the bar for a couple of drinks.

Originally founded in 1946 as a massive shipyard in Amsterdam-Noord, NDSM was once one of the largest in Europe and a key hub of Dutch shipbuilding. After the decline of the industry and bankruptcy in 1984, the site was left abandoned for years. Since the 1990s it has been transformed into a vibrant cultural and creative district, with old shipyard halls, warehouses, and cranes preserved as industrial heritage. Today NDSM is home to the STRAAT Museum, Kunststad, music and festival venues, and even unique hotels like the Crane Hotel and waterfront container stays. A lively hub for artists, startups, and alternative culture.
