On the Grid : Neko Neko

"Another venue that is technically in Fitzroy (but locals will feel belongs to Collingwood all the same) is Neko Neko (or 'Cat Cat'). Being the new kid on the block, it's the latest incarnation of Smith St's Wabi Sabi Salon, a Japanese restaurant. Whether take away or eat in, both options are to die for! Try the kingfish dish (pictured below)! If you're a vegetarian, pescatarian or vegan you'll sure feel the love here as your choices will be many, and they will be good. Very good. The place is small but beautifully done. No detail has been spared and eating in makes for a singularly enjoyable experience. Sit on the front bench and watch the Fitzroy and Collingwood crowds swagger by." - Studio Fellow

I came here excited… there is another place in Carrollton Texas called somisomi it’s delicious. I was looking forward to trying this place. My encounter with the young man at the register was not so good. I ordered the cup with half and half flavor with taiyaki on top. I don’t know how he got my order mixed up there was only one couple behind me once I made it to the front of the line and no one in front of me waiting. I was given a ice-cream filled taiyaki which is not what I ordered. When I kindly tried to tell the person who fixed my order that my order was incorrect I was interrupted my the man at the register and he told the guy to “just give me a empty cup” I was dismissed after that. I won’t be coming back. Customer service is huge to me. I spend my money where customer service, kindness and quality is the standard. They both should have taken the time out and corrected my order.

I recently tried an ice cream with fish cone that had red bean filling, featuring ube and mango flavors on different occasions, and it was an unforgettable experience! The ube had a creamy, smooth texture with a subtle sweetness. The red bean filling added an interesting twist, offering a unique texture and an earthy flavor that balanced the sweetness of the ice cream. The atmosphere of the place was just as impressive as the ice cream itself. The staff was super friendly, adding to the overall positive vibe. If you’re looking for a cool spot with amazing ice cream, this place is definitely a must-visit!

Google
If you want a cute picture for Instagram, this is the place to go. You’re paying premium ice cream prices for soft-serve with a fish cone. It’s not like normal taiyaki in Japan where the batter and filling is cooked together, it’s a taiyaki cone. They spoon in the filling then put the soft-serve either on top or in a bowl. The fish is good. Soft-serve is, well, soft-serve. Expect to pay over 10 dollars per person. Customer service was fine and fast.

Google
This will satisfy your ice cream cravings! We had "Mi Amor" & "Want Samoa" with some Chibiyaki-Nutella. If you love strawberry ice cream, try Mi Amor with matcha! Want Samoe is chocolate ice-cream with caramel & coconut. I wasn't too impressed with that one. Regardless, delicious!

Google
This place was amazing!! Totally deserves 5 stars. So unique and delicious. There were only a few flavors of the ice cream but so many different combinations with the toppings and such. I got the ube ice cream, which was purple! And there are some neat toppings like macha powder and black sesame seeds. Great and unique place and definitely recommend it. Lastly- I highly recommend the fish cone. It's cake-like and very unique!!

Google
Such a fun atmosphere. All the employees were quick to make sure my ice cream dish was gluten free and they were way personable and fun. And the ice cream may be the best I’ve ever had in my entire life. The ube with condensed milk and La hung powder was amazing!!

Google
This place exceeded all my expectations! The ice cream itself was very creamy and delicious, and the little fishy cone topped it off perfectly. It had a crunchy texture on the outside, but on the inside, it was soft and spongy. The customer service was really great, and I appreciated them not skimping out on the toppings. If you're in Albuquerque, I definitely recommend visiting Neko Neko. You won't regret it!! EDIT: 5/11/24 I'm visiting Albuquerque again, and this place is as good as last time! The ice cream and fish cones were delicious, and the guy taking our order was so sweet. Last photo is the ice cream I bought today (vanilla ice cream sprinkled with fruity pebbles with a nutella stuffed fish cone)

Google
Years ago when I first tried pandan flavor here, it blew my mind. I hopefully will be coming back soon when I'm in the area. The fish thing with Nutella was really good with the ice cream too.

Yelp
My son's review: Takiyaki fish cone was super flavorful and was like mochi. I ordered mango and ube flavored soft serve. We found the store hidden behind the poke place in Sawmill. What is crazy is that their samples are huge like a forth of a cup! I recommend the ube flavored soft serve.
google avatar

Yelp
We were craving ice cream and are huge fans of Somi-Somi, so we wandered over to this small window in Sawmill Market :) The menu has a good variety of toppings and unique flavors - we had never seen pandan flavored soft serve! We got the matcha/ube cup combo ($7.50) with mochi and sesame topping. The soft serve flavors are fragrant and are more light/icy as opposed to rich and creamy. The taiyaki is on the small side but crispy and delicious! Friendly staff. Overall, an enjoyable experience!
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
What a sweet cuticles away in a corner on the left. It is small but packed with sweet ice cream with big flavors. Enjoy the ambiance of Sawmill!
google avatar

Yelp
Thank you yelp , neko neko and Destiny for another delightful Yelp experience. I tried the pandas icecream which tastes similar to vanilla, a very yummy and unique flavor. I love this cute, yummy place and I hope I can return soon!

Yelp
Super popular spot! We happily waited in line for ice-cream, two days in a row - so, so good! Kind & friendly servers. Delicious product!
google avatar

Yelp
I got the taro ice cream- delicious!! With sweetened condensed milk and Oreo, everything was amazing. My favorite part of Neko Neko is their incredible takoyaki cones, they are perfectly chewy, the texture is great!! I really recommend trying some of their more unique flavors!!
google avatar

Yelp
I love Neko Neko! Located inside of Sawmill Market. The staff is friendly and helpful. We ordered the Taiyaki Cone with fruity pebbles. The cone was made fresh in the cutest fish shape and served to us quickly. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Did the surprise me option here, I was not disappointed. I ended up with chocolate and Ube mixed with Butterfinger topping. It's not what I would have ordered, but I'm glad I let them decide because it was delicious. Also if there's something you absolutely do not want on top of your surprise me you can tell them, and they will accommodate you. The taiyaki what's nice and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
google avatar

Emily Y.

Yelp
The ube soft serve and red bean filling were very good, but I was a tad bit disappointed in the taiyaki cone itself, I suppose it's more of a expectations issue. I was expecting a classic cake-like taiyaki, but it was a ice cream cone shaped like a taiyaki - two very different textures. I believe they had mini taiyaki. That may be more what I'm looking for, so I'll try that next time I'm in Sawmill.
google avatar

Victoria W.

Yelp
This taiyaki ice cream place was surprisingly good and better than many other ones that I've been to in major cities! We ordered the vanilla soft serve inside the taiyaki cone with condensed milk and Oreo crumbs on top. The star of the show is really the taiyaki cone which is crispy, chewy, and cooked fresh. I would have really loved to see more flavor options for the soft serve - for example a matcha or black sesame soft serve would be absolutely delicious! Also, I was disappointed that the red bean filling was already sold out at 6 pm, but the Nutella filling that we ended up getting paired well with the vanilla soft serve as well. The stall is tucked in a side corner of the market and a little hidden. There is a beautiful spacious outdoor/indoor seating space. This is the perfect place to come to relax and enjoy the company of friends or family!

Yelp
Roadtrip with a stop at #SawMillMarket. Had to try the #Taiyaki with #UbeIceCream #RedBeansPaste. Lots of ice cream (soft serve ) and I chose sprinkles to make it festive. All tasted delicious including the waffle like cone (teriyaki). Service was friendly and quick. We had time to talk to the server but then a line started forming and they got busy. Yummy!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious Japanese dessert place at Sawmill Market. I had chocolate instead of Ube but both are delicious.
google avatar

Destiny L.

Yelp
Always such a fun treat! I love the taiyaki cones even on a cold day. I recently went and got one of the options off of their special flavor combo board. I can't remember the name of what I got but it was a swirl of the blue cookie dough and chocolate with Oreo crumble on top. It was really good, the blue did stain quite a bit though just as a warning. Sometimes they are a bit busy and get behind on the cones, so there is more of a wait.
google avatar

Annie M.

Yelp
Such a great ice-cream experience! They are always super fast and I like that the flavors and toppings rotate. You never know what's going to be on the menu. And the fish cones are the BEST. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Neko Neko. Moshi moshi. Hello Hello. Cat Cat. This ice cream spot was a wonderful oasis to quench my dry lips. The ube flavor was purple and deep with flavor. The nutella finish with the cone was an excellent pairing with the ice cream. I had sprinkles and condensed milk which were just the right sweetness for this ice cream. Improveables: The ice cream melted very quick and we were indoors. My nervousness is that it became ice cream soup. I'm usually a fast dessert eater, so I can only imagine for all the people that want to savor each bite. On a side note, this establishment is a bit hard to find, so keep searching and you will be extra blessed.

Yelp
OMG so so GOOD!! Long line but it went by super fast!! So so yummy!! It looks so pretty and tastes so Good!! Such a cute place!!

Yelp
Good ice cream. Its worth checking out but wasn't impressed to go back. It's small portions, so don't expect to share. Located in sawmill.
google avatar

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised to find a taiyaki spot in Albuquerque! Swung by for a late afternoon snack and was surprised to find a line. After finishing my taiyaki, it was clear why there's a line. Very worth the wait! They have a ton of options, I went with Passion Fruit just because I wanted a little mix between sugary and tangy. Will def be returning to try the others though. They also have lots of options for toppings, but were out of mochi when I went. Will return for that too! Their soft serve is a good mix between soft and still frozen, so it's not melting and running all over by the time you get to the end. The actual taiyaki was pretty good too! I prefer mine a little more chewy but this is great for the price and location. It's a bit hard to find once you enter Sawmill, but it's near the Keva station if that helps.
google avatar

Eliyah O.

Yelp
I came here for dessert and found it really delicious, though I wish they offered Matcha as a flavor rather than just a powder. The portion size seemed a bit pricey, but overall, it was good, and I'd definitely come back. The people were really knowledgeable and friendly and gave good recommendations. I love sawmill anywhere to sit is great!
google avatar

Heidi A.

Yelp
I felt like it was worse than when I've had it before. The red beans in the taiyaki was very watery and barely any in there. The ice cream itself wasn't as good as when I first tried it last year. The staff was not very friendly and it was hard to gauge if they were actually listening to me. Maybe I will try again someday. Not anytime soon.
google avatar

Sandra B.

Yelp
Nice little ice cream option at sawmill market. (The location is a little hidden by the poke place) I haven't had taro since visiting guam last year. So it was a nice surprise they offer this flavor. It reminded me of being on the beach in warm weather. The sales attendant was pleasant, welcoming, and offered suggestions. Definitely will be coming here again.

Yelp
This was my best find in Albuquerque, NM. It's a corner store inside Sawmill Market . You could almost miss it. It's a Japanese ice cream place with several flavors and lots of toppings to choose from. . They had the usual vanilla and chocolate and Nutella, but I saw something called Ube. The staff was really nice and they explained to me what Ube is. It's a purple colored mild flavored or most like vanilla ice cream you can choose cup or cone. I recommend doing a combination of both. The cone is almost waffle-like , crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Mine came in the shape of a fish actually and they stuck it upside down in a cup on top of the soft serve ice cream. You can choose from two toppings and they have a variety of toppings, I saw roasted black, sesame seed, caramel, chocolate, dripping Oreo, cookie crumble, and several more. You can also get mochi at this place. They were shaped like cats, and you can fill them with Nutella or red bean paste. I wish I had one more day here in New Mexico to try out the these as well. If you're in Albuquerque definitely stop by sawmill maker. It's a food court with so many unique restaurants to try out from, ranging from coffee and desserts to burgers, pasta, and everything and definitely stop by the Neko Neko, ice cream and soft serve place

Sharon Q.

Yelp
Another great spot to stop at saw mill market! Also if you wear their shirt there you get a discount forgot how much but overall love this place bunch of flavors and great service!
google avatar

Tina G.

Yelp
This place is kind of tucked away in Sawmill Market, but wow! It is amazing! I got the purple taro vanilla ice cream in a fish with Nutella at the bottom and the whole thing was drizzled lightly in condensed milk and dusted with twix crumbles. It was amazing! And the fish waffle was soft and perfect! Go get one!
google avatar

Anna D.

Yelp
Hands down to to the towns best Japanese type of waffle fish shaped dessert in town. They sell ice cream and two of their products come with a waffle fish dessert that can be bought as hand held dessert or in a cup to prevents spills and messed. Either way both can be filled with filling and toppings can be added. They definitely present the ice cream treat as something delicious and something you must try while being in the sawmill makert. It's a little bit pricey for an ice cream cone but worth it. Staff is friendly. Since it's inside the sawmill market it can get overwhelming with the extensive lines that happens occasionally. Atmosphere during rough hour can seem fast paced but otherwise calming.
google avatar

Anabel U.

Yelp
After seeing everyone walking around with ice cream, we were able to find them nestled in a corner. Luckily, there wasn't much of a wait since the taiyaki are pre-made and the ice cream is soft serve. Do note, and I'll repeat it: the ice cream is soft serve and not scooped ice cream. (There was a few people upset about this ahead of us.) For our order we were able to choose a filling and two toppings with additional toppings at an extra price. The portion was just great for an after lunch dessert.
google avatar

Lamont W.

Yelp
Yes that's right this place is 5 stars. The ice cream was amazing and the service the same. I would tell you how great this place is in a long post, but I'd rather you just experience it for yourself. Now go get you some ice cream.
google avatar

Megan C.

Yelp
SUCH a great spot for a treat after enjoying drinks in Sawmill Market. The ordering process was a smidge confusing and make a plan to eat your ice cream ASAP after ordering. She melts pretty quick and lead to a very messy car ride. We went with a filled Tayaki with two flavors and it was excellent. Be prepared to wait (at least when we were there this past summer) but it is WORHT it! Excited to go back the next time I am hanging out in ABQ.
google avatar

Sabrina F.

Yelp
I really enjoy this Japanese soft serve ice cream. Its even made without milk so lactose intolerant people can enjoy! I always get the vanilla with toasted coconut and caramel.

Shawn F.

Yelp
Neko Neko has definitely improved since the last time I've been here. They seem to be copying the vibe of Somi Somi, a California brand, and they are doing a pretty great job at it! I've had the similar dessert in Japan several times and I prefer this one by a long shot. It's probably because I'm American and love super sweet things! Great job to the team running this. Maybe lower the prices a little bit and I'll be going a lot more often!
google avatar

Alisa S.

Yelp
Very good dessert! So fun to share with our son. You can choose between no filling, Nutella and red bean for the taiyaki. Two toppings for soft serve. Taiyaki is crispy on the outside and a little chewy on the inside. Located in a little corner near poke. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Kathy B.

Yelp
Great ice cream served with a Japanese fish shaped cake, that has a filling in it I chose Nutella which was quite delicious! I had the chocolate and strawberry soft serve ice cream with toffee bits and caramel drizzle. Definitely a place to go when you are at the Sawmill District.
google avatar

Yelp
The flavor of ice cream is very strong, and there are many kinds. The staff is patient and the environment is good. Rare Japanese dessert shop.
google avatar

Irena S.

Yelp
Disclaimer - I'm a California girl so this rating may be biased, since I'm helplessly comparing it to things like Uji Time and other Japanese dessert places in the Bay Area. I know that places like this are rare in NM and don't want to crap on this place trying out some Asian soft serve and testing it on the ABQ crowd. We got the black sesame taiyaki with red bean filling, with a pocky stick topping Pros: - Quick wait time, Less than 5 mins - Decent service, all the employees we interacted with were super nice - Nice location - honestly inside Sawmill Market is where this place would most thrive. I like that you can get it after a savory dinner somewhere else in the market. - Good flavors and a lot of topping options (even sprinkles, which I personally think don't go well with Asian flavored soft serve, but something for everyone right?) - Ok price - Red bean filling tasted good, the taiyaki was warm Cons: - I didn't like that the black sesame soft serve tasted icy. As if they didn't clean the froyo machine of the ice enough, or the setting was too high, making it more like icy tasting ice cream instead of soft serve. The actual flavor was fine, but the texture kind of turned me off. I think I would give this place another try overall
google avatar

Scott P.

Yelp
. $18.27 for two small portions of this ice cream What a joke. My wife enjoyed the product. It was average in my opinion. Hard to believe what they charge $, what you get for the money, and people are lined up to buy it. Never again. Multiple pints of Ben and Jerry's cost less - are better quality, and don't leave you with a bad taste in your mouth of being taken advantage of. Nothing special in my opinion - a true gimmick for the naive consumer.
google avatar

Melody V.

Yelp
The Nutella and apple Taeyaki's are amazing! The Taeyaki shells were crispy and soft. The soft serve is the perfect consistency and the flavors come out beautifully. The management here is extremely customer oriented and it shows. We had a great experience and will be back next time we're in the city!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in because I have heard such good things about Sawmill Market. Saw on TikTok that someone recommended Neko Neko so I knew I had to try it after viewing photos. We are way out of town lol so that defiantly made me want to try it even more. Got to Neko Neko and found out they were not open at the time we arrived. Went to Old Town Albuquerque and then came back. They still weren't open so we waited a little bit longer at Sawmill Market. Finally, we got to order but on the plus side the guy working the register was super friendly! I decided to go with a Taiyaki Cone with Vanilla Soft Serve topped with Fruity Peebles and Sweetened Condensed Milk. The soft serve was amazing. Not to sweet, creamy, and had such a delicious uncommon flavor. Really enjoyed it. I'm glad I went with my pairing choices as the fruity pebbles and sweetened condensed milk were perfect additions to the vanilla soft serve. The cone was also very good. Super soft yet still delivering a chewy crunch. The pricing wasn't too bad, but more than I usually prefer to may for ice cream but this was just one of those things you just have to try. So, I justified the pricing. 10/10 - Service, and Goods. 7/10 - Pricing. Overall - 9/10

Yelp
Came to sawmill and saw a few people with this fish cone and had to try. I moved from Vegas to Dc where there are a lot of asian desert options to very few I was excited there was even an option in ABQ, NM. The customer service was incredible the cashier was very friendly and excited to take my order! I ordered a taro soft serve in a red bean bun. I thought the taro didn't taste like taro. It just tasted like milk. The red bean paste was good, warm and sweet. This place is worth it I'm for posting on the gram, but the flavor is not as intense as other taro Ice cream I've had. Good for the area since there aren't any competitors that have these flavors.

Yelp
This is the first time I have tried this place. I always pass by it when I'm trying to find a place to get some dessert inside of Sawmill Market. This time I decided I'd give it a try. Plus, I heard they had Taro, I wanted to try that. The day I visited they didn't have that flavor available. I gave them 4 stars, since the staff wasn't too friendly, like I had hoped. Not even a "Hello, how can I help you?" or "Hello, let us know if you have questions?". Kind of disappointing. They just said, "Just let us know when you're ready to order!" But I gave them the benefit of the doubt and proceeded with my order. Since they didn't have the Taro flavor I decided I'd try the Matcha soft serve flavor that came with two toppings, I chose coconut and oreos. It's definitely an acquired taste, but I liked it a lot. It was good to me. I'll have to try it again, maybe another flavor. Hoping they have Taro the next time I visit.
google avatar

Angela S.

Yelp
I did not expect these fun looking, Instagram worthy fish to be SOFT IN THE MIDDLE but they are! Soooo good. The flavors of the frozen yogurt don't pack a very strong punch, they feel a little more "eating something cold" than flavorful, but all the toppings and the killer cone more than make up! You can bet to find me trying anyplace that has Taro on the menu!
google avatar

Lee Ann R.

Yelp
Thanks to a shortened work day, I had a little free time and decided to go to Neko Neko. I've heard good things about their soft serve, and now I can say that their reputation is well-deserved. I ordered a taro taiyaki cone. With a cone, you get a cone filling (mine was red bean), the ice cream, and two toppings (black sesame seeds and mochi cubes on mine). Sawmill Market was extremely busy and my cone was starting to drip by the time I found a seat, so I dove in. The flavor combination was perfect! I'll have to bring my husband next time so one of us can grab a table while the other one orders.
google avatar

Emann B.

Yelp
So cute and delicious, and not too sweet! I had the jasmine tea soft serve, which was lightly fragrant, topped with sweet and crunchy toasted coconut with a skewer of mochi. Came with the trademark fish shaped waffle, which added a nice crunchy/chewy texture and smooth eggy flavor.
google avatar

Bobby W.

Yelp
Good flavors and toppings. Nice staff. I got the black sesame, which was good in flavor. The matcha is also very good. Even bigger brands in other cities don't have black sesame. The taiyaki was good but would love to see expanded flavors for that
google avatar

Marie S.

Yelp
I had been wanting to try Neko Neko for awhile (I mean there's nothing quite like it in Albuquerque!) and finally got to try it a few months ago. I got the fun, Instagrammable fish-shaped cone filled with Nutella and topped with coconut and strawberry pocky. $6.50 would be a little more than usual that I would pay for an ice cream, but this was one of those "why not" kind of things and staff was friendly too. The day before they had a pumpkin carving contest at Sawmill and everything was decorated with cute little pumpkins. I wish they would've had a few other flavors besides vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and taro that day, but I know that they had barely opened at that point. The Nutella on the inside was a nice contrast from a contrast on the outside, albeit a little messy at times. 2021 #12

Yelp
An absolute must-try! The staff are always super wonderful. One thing I'd love to see would be a custard filling like you can get at SomiSomi.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with this place. The employees have always been incredibly nice to me. I went with family once and they were on break so we waited. When they stopped break they apologized and were incredibly nice. They never need to apologize, every employee deserves time to relax!! Everyone there works hard and makes great ice cream, and I'm grateful to see how popular they are. Even if visiting ABQ for a little, don't miss this place! Did I mention their ice cream is awesome too? Cus it is! I love the flavors, I've had Thai tea, honeydew, and pineapple and it's so good. The taiyaki is not just cute, but a great addition to the ice cream. And I'm serious when I say this: fruity pebbles on everything is amazing.
google avatar

Nathan E.

Yelp
I was worried about an experience like this, where there's a mix of words I'm not familiar with and the promise of ice cream (soft serve) with sugary topping. But I'm delighted to say the ladies behind the counter knew exactly where I was coming from and hooked me up! I explained that I saw a kid with a fish shaped cone and wanted one and that I'm not a chocolate guy, and ended up with the fish shaped cone in a cup of strawberry ice cream with fruity pebbles and jellies. I had not had jellies before, but was assured they were in my wheel house. The delicious treat I tasted next was like falling in love for the first time all over again. Perfectly balanced and not overpoweringly sugary. The fish cone turned out to be a delightful semi soft waffle, crispy on the outside and soft and bready inside. My only complaint was eating my dinner first and not being able to finish my dessert. Next time I think I'll skip the meal and make a bee-line straight for this odd little ice cream shop.

Yelp
Finally had another trip to Albuquerque and got to stop here again! Only wish I had more time so I could go everyday! More great recommendations and service too!

Yelp
The dessert gods have answered our prayers because taiyaki has FINALLY landed in ABQ! Neko Neko, tucked in the back wall of Sawmill, recently just opened this weekend & I had the pleasure of visiting + trying out what they had to offer! There were different flavors to choose from, whether you like vanilla or chocolate, or there's also taro, matcha, & pineapple! Fun fact: you can have the flavor you pick swirled w/ another flavor, so it's the best of both worlds. Aside from the flavors, they also have a variety of toppings for you to choose from as well! They have Oreo crumbs, jolly rancher crumbs, mochi bites, fruity pebbles, pocky sticks, condense milk drizzle, & more! The possibilities to make your own dessert is endless, since you get to customize it to your own liking! The staff is super nice & friendly as well! They are willing & happy to answer any + all questions you may have about their products. Overall, it was a super pleasant experience & I will definitely be coming back to try other flavor + topping combinations!
