The Neue Pinokothek (€7 per adult) is a modern art museum in Munich where you view a quality collection of 19th century modern art. Opening hours are 10am to 6pm daily with extended hours on Wednesday evening until 8pm. The museum is closed on Tuesdays. Entrance fee includes an audio guide which is allows you to learn more about individual artworks as you make your way through various galleries. Rooms are numbered chronologically and there is a natural path which takes visitors through the entire collection. During our midweek visit, there were few other visitors, allowing a relaxed visit throughout. Here you find a good representation of notable international artists such as Goya, Manet, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh, Gainsborough, Turner, Klimt, Schiele amongst many others. There is also a good representation of German artists including Heinrich Maria von Hess, Peter von Hess, Peter von Cornelius and Caspar David Friedrich. Our visit lasted around 2.5 hours. We enjoyed the collection and would return for another visit during future visits to Munich. Note that the Die Pinakotheken museums in Munich are only €1 to enter on Sundays so try visit 2-3 on the day if you are a museum lover and want to save a bit on museum entry fees.

Large museum and extremely well curated with a mix of German and other artists represented. As the world's first museum devoted to contemporary art it continues to live up to the standards of excellence it has established since the day it opened its doors. For the casual to avid art lover there are many fantastic evenings to be spent exploring the works in his gallery

Amazing selection of art. With some true master pieces. Chance to get up close in a well designed building. Could easily spend the day here if you have the stamina. You don't get many opportunities to see the names of true works of art.

My favorite Pinakothek! Lots of very beautiful pieces of art exposed, well organized and quite big. I really love the last few rooms as I am a huge Klimt, Gaugin, Monet and Van Gogh fan. In Sundays the entrance is just 1€. Definitely worth a visit when in Munich.

It's an amazing museum, don't get me wrong, but I was disappointed at the lack of Impressionism artwork and of the periods from there on, since that is my personal favourite. The entrance is also a bit expensive (5€ for students during the week). A pro is that it is open until 20h few days a week so there is no rush.

Spending Sunday there was great. As it is well known, the ticket costs only 1 Euro every Sunday. You can also buy an audio guide to understand the paintings better. Definitely to worth to visit. Big bags has to be left in cloakroom (costs under 1 Euro) or in safe deposit boxes (no charge) which are downstairs.

Focused on 19th-century art, this museum bridges classical and modern styles, displaying Romanticism, Impressionism, and Symbolism. The collection emphasizes shifts in artistic techniques, social themes, and the impact of industrialization on visual culture.

Yelp
This was a wonderful day at the museum. Monet, Gauguin, and many more. We were here over four hours and it wasn't t enough. Come if you can...

Yelp
This is a world class museum built in 1981 that houses sculptures, paintings, and bronzes. If you come Sunday it only cost one euro to enter. Spend the money and rent the audio guide because the insights are fascinating and the text is set to music. It is a real enhancement of the experience.

Yelp
While the Alte Pinakothek, located a block away, contains 'old' paintings, the Neue contains 18th and 19th century art. It's mainly European paintings, but some sculptures are scattered in small rooms and hallways throughout the building. While I didn't enjoy the art here as much as I liked the ones at the Alte (I just like old paintings more), the building here is easier to navigate and has a much brighter atmosphere. This museum has a easy layout, just follow the signs for the Tour and you'll get through the museum easily. Admission is 1 euro here for Sundays too.

Yelp
My partner and I are primarily spending a few days in Munich to visit the city's Christkindlmarkt. We also visited the Alte Pinakothek, Neue Pinakothek, and the Pinakothek der Moderne. Of the three museums, we enjoyed the Neue the most. Unlike the Moderne, the labels at the Neue provide translations for the works' titles, etc. That's very helpful if you don't speak German. In addition, the Neue's collection is much easier to navigate than those of the Alte and Moderne because the rooms are numbered sequentially. The Alte has been under construction since 2014 and, as a result, some of its collection is unavailable to view. Plus, I prefer Paul Reubens to Peter Paul Rubens!

Yelp
What an incredible collection! I was really excited to visit Pinakothek Modern, but ended up enjoying Neue wayyyy more. The VanGogh was reason enough to pay the €10 entrance fee! You can purchase a multi-museum day pass for just €2 more, but beware, each museum has a day when it's closed and they don't line up.

Yelp
Great layout, clean and sharp lines and lighting and interesting architecture make this a lovely museum to walk around. The displays are great with a good mix of sculptures, impressionist paintings and loads of German art from the 19th and 20th century. Need more than a day to really see the place. Must come back on a Sunday when entrance fee is €1 :-))

Yelp
Very interesting museum, not at least from a historical view of the development of Art in late 1700 to late 1800 during the Romantic period (Romanticism). Not my favorite era, but extremely important to understand both for what would develop, Modernism, Cubism, Surrealism etc., and as a background to the more authoritarian political views in early 1900, fascism, national-socialism and communism. Recommended!

Yelp
This is one of Munich's main art museums. When I was studying here many, many years ago, the Alte and Neue Pinakotheks were must-sees. Personally, I'm not a fan of the "dark and gloomies" as I call them, so I've not felt the need to revisit the Alte Pinakothek. But, on a recent trip to Munich I thought I might as well go back to the Neue. While there are some works here that I like and I think are worth seeing, I don't know that I would go back again. I'm a bit more cultured now than when I lived in Munich, and I guess I've turned into more of an art snob. I know what I like and I don't feel the need to spend my time or money on works that don't appeal. Many of the works in this museum are not far removed from the dark and gloomies. There are 2 redeeming rooms that house some impressionist works. For them alone, I'm saying A-OK. Staff were not rude, but were not friendly either. And, some signage would help. We inadvertently walked all the way around the building before we found the front entrance, because we chose just the wrong corner to start with and turned in the wrong direction. If you are a fan of more modern, more colorful paintings, skip this museum and visit Lenbachhaus (once it reopens). It was my absolute favorite during my time living in Munich. I delayed one trip to Germany because it was closed, and was disappointed its reopening was even further delayed for my most recent trip.

Yelp
Better be there off-peak. Especially on Sunday the queues are ridiculous. Some nice expositions. Try the other Pinakotheken, too!

Yelp
Interesting and worthwhile collection. Yes, there is significant emphasis on German works. Many of these are worthy and are certainly worth your time. If you are interested in pre-19th century art, go to the Alte Pinakothek. If you are interested in 20th century art go to the modern art museum across the street. The museum itself is lovely and the price (one euro on Sundays) is right. We enjoyed very much our visit!

Yelp
Very extensive collection, of most interest to fans of post-Renaissance art (I don't recall seeing many pieces predating this period, I'm guessing they are found in the Alte Pinakothek). Two stars off for unfriendly staff. I'm not asking for fake smiles, but both staff members I encountered here were rude.

Yelp
Collections are always worth it and the place is clean and well laid out. Great gift shop too. But the people at the ticket counter are DICKS. As it is often the case in Germany, rudeness prevails and leaves a sour taste in one's mouth.

Yelp
In a day of exploring the art museums of Munich, we were disappointed by the Neue Pinakothek. As expected, they have a very strong collection of 19th Century Germany paintings but we just couldn't get into it. After seeing the extraordinary collection at the Alte Pinakothek, this was a bit of a let down. Still, there were some jewels in the mix. If we find ourselves back in Munich, we'd probably gravitate to the other museums.
