Day Trips in Mexico City

"This is the fourth highest peak in Mexico. The crater of this inactive volcano has two alpine lakes that are easily accessible by a 20-minute hike. The volcano is 15,350 feet above sea level, so walk slowly and carefully, even if the trail seems fairly easy. The place can also be very cold and windy during winter. You can find some tour providers online, but the best way to get there is by car, so either rent one or convince a local friend to get you there. Reaching the Nevado will take you around two and a half hours from Mexico City, but you really want to arrive there early since the weather can be unpredictable in the afternoons. The last part of the road is unpaved and quite difficult to navigate at night, so make sure you’re on your way back to the city before nightfall." - MATADOR_NETWORK

El Nevado is a beautiful place with amazing views. The hike is not too bad if you are acclimated to it. You definitely need the proper footwear since the trail is somewhat slippery on certain areas. ENJOY!!!

Nevado de Toluca – A Stunning Hiking Destination Nevado de Toluca is an incredible spot for hiking and exploring, offering breathtaking views and a unique experience. Here are some tips to make the most of your visit: Preparation Tips 1. Travel with a Local: If possible, go with someone from Mexico who knows the area and is trustworthy. It’s not dangerous, but it’s always better to have a guide. 2. Stop for Breakfast: Before heading up, visit one of the small restaurants along the way for a hearty breakfast, a drink, and a bathroom break. There are no facilities once you’re at the site. Getting There • Pickup Trucks: The journey to the summit is an adventure itself. You’ll likely ride in the back of a pickup truck, which is a fun and unique experience. In Mexico, it’s allowed, unlike in many other countries. • Pricing: If you’re with a local, you’re less likely to be overcharged for transportation. Tourists can sometimes face higher prices. Hiking and Exploration • Save Your Energy: Avoid hiking from the base to the summit, as there’s plenty of walking to do once you’re there. Opt for the truck ride instead. • Timing: Visit early in the morning to avoid harsh sunlight and crowds. Weekdays are best, as weekends can get busy with locals. What to Expect • Weather: While it’s cold due to the snow, the sun can be intense, so dress in layers and wear sunscreen. • Local Vendors: Check out the vendors when you return for snacks or souvenirs. Take your time to soak in the beauty of the landscape, enjoy the fresh air, and get lost in the tranquility of Nevado de Toluca. It’s an unforgettable experience!

If you have small children I don't recommend you trying to go up. The air is thin. 25 pesos per child and 50 pesos for adults. Try to go to the restroom before heading out. If you go all the way down to the lagoons I recommend you take an empty water bottle,if you want to take crystal clear water with you. I found out you can get fined if you take the flowers growing along the path. Make sure to read the rules. Make sure to get good shoes for the hike .

The place is majestic. All mountain lovers will enjoy it. Come early though as the traffic accumulates fast

This is by far one of my favorite places to visit! However, I wouldn’t recommend going at the beginning of the year, as it tends to be crowded with tourists. The best time to visit is during the week when it’s less busy and also more affordable. In the past, this spot was much calmer, with only locals selling food. Now, it’s always bustling, and vendors even sell items like gloves and other gear. A few important recommendations for your visit: Wear thermal or comfortable clothing, sturdy boots or shoes with good grip, and bring trekking poles to help with the ascent. Also, have a light breakfast beforehand for better endurance. Lastly, please respect this beautiful place by keeping it clean. Let’s all do our part to preserve it!

MUST VISIT PLACE. This is worth visiting when you visit Mexico City. No entrance fee. No restrictions on drone flights. Walking up towards the top of the volcano is one of the life time experience.

It was a very nice experience to be able to hike this crater. The views from up are better than the views from the lakes. The trails and difficulties are not signalized making it necessary to plan things before going. To access the Nevado on the weekends, you cannot drive up to the basecamp Campamento del Nevado de Toluca where the entrance to the volcano is. You need to park the car 17km before, at the entrance of the Venados Park and pay 50 Mexican pesos for a ride to the camp (and 50 to go back at the end of the day). Apparently, during the week, it’s allowed to park at the Nevado entrance. The problem about depending on their transportation is that it done in vans and the van doesn’t leave the stations until it’s full. I had to wait 45 minutes until the van I was left to where my car was parked. This is a long time after spending hours in the park hiking.
