"Ek Mutton Estew aur Tandoori Roti." That was our first order at this heritage restaurant. The service was really quick. Their special Estew is a signature dish and it did keep up it's name with the soft and fluffy bread. The Mutton Rezala, with soupy consistency and really very unique infusion of flavors was really good. Mutton Korma was good too, but not something I would be thrilled to try again. Not to mention that the mutton in every dish was perfectly softened to perfection. Mutton Biriyani was good, not very oily, subtle flavours without the strong essence, perfect Kolkata Gharana, goes best with the Mutton Chanp. The ambience reminds of old school Calcutta with every bite. To end with Firni is a must. It's like no other firni I've tasted. Subtle sweetness with perfect texture. One portion of each of these side dishes together was sufficient for 3 of us. To wrap up it's definately a must try for all Mughal cuisine enthusiasts.

Went shopping in Esplanade and decided to have lunch here. This almost century-old restaurant came highly recommended by a relative, and it was my first time visiting. For my wife and me, I ordered one plate of mutton stew, one tandoori roti, one plate of mutton biryani, and a firni for dessert. The mutton stew, despite its name, was actually slow-cooked mutton in a rich onion and tomato gravy—paired with tandoori roti, it tasted heavenly. The biryani was Kolkata-style, served with a signature big potato and a generous piece of mutton. What we loved most was how light it felt, with a very subtle aroma of rose water and kewra water. As for the firni—it was one of the best I’ve ever had! I’d come back just for that. We also packed an extra plate of biryani to take home. Overall, it was a nice experience. However, we did notice some hygiene issues, which is why I can’t give this place a full five-star rating.

It was a very good experience, the taste was absolutely good. Mutton pieces were rich in fat and perfect for stew and chap. Out of all the food mutton stew was best as it was more of in bihari style. If you are in esplanade you must visit the restaurant for mughlai cuisine.

I had Mutton Briyani. This was Rice, Rice,Rice, Potato. And a miniature amount of mutton - luckily I had my reading glasses, so I could find it. For 340 Rs, not sure about the value for money...

Everything is absolutely delicious. Does justice to price tag of the dishes. Every preparation lived up to the hype of the place. Highly recommended. We ordered chicken bharta and mutton rezala. The gravy was a bit too oily but irresistiblely tasty. The mutton was soft, and well done. The chicken bharta was unlike what we have normally, but we wouldn't complain one bit. Had kulcha additionally which was so filling, one was enough for one person

Everyone MUST try here the lacchha paratha & mutton chap, those are the best in Kolkata. One of the oldest restaurants in Kolkata. Still maintaining their legacy beautifully. Will visit again.

I was a regular patron here some 30 years ago when I was working in Kolkata. The lingering taste of the Biryani and Chaap and of course the Mutton Tikia and Rumali Roti got me walking into Alia after almost 3 decades. The Mutton Biryani is just as good as I remembered!! The chicken chaap at Alia is hands down one of the best in Kolkata, probably only bettered by Royal. I’ll be back!!
