Somsack Sikhounmuong’s Grub Street Diet

"A midtown Chinese restaurant from the team behind a sought-after Williamsburg spot; despite the other venue’s difficulty to get into, this location offered a roomy, family-style lunch with dishes like lobster with ginger and scallion, noodles, and fried rice—ideal for large groups." - Zach Schiffman, Sarah Kilcoyne

Good experience! New china was open before other Chinese places which was nice and the service was very good and we were helped nicely (we’ve never been here before) my beef lo mein was good and the fried dumplings were really good

Google
This is such a pleasant surprise in a place not known for good Chinese food. We gotten takeout twice now, and have been pleased with the care taken. The dishes that should be spicy were actually spicy! Hot and sour soup that makes your lips tingle, Singapore Mei fun that is pungent with curry, and well flavored Kung pao chicken with tons of vegetables, chicken, and peanuts. I did add chili crisp to the Kung pao, because I like it very spicy. We also got shrimp egg foo young, which was also generously filled with shrimp and veg. And the bout and sour soup had so much tofu, mushrooms, and bamboo shoots that it’s almost a meal in itself! We also got crab Rangoon, which is a childhood favorite. This was nicely balanced, with (I assume) surimi and cream cheese, and nicely seasoned. Nothing was greasy, although we got several fried items. Portions were generous, and the service was friendly and efficient. What I really appreciated was that they asked if I wanted condiments. I didn’t, because I have them at home, and hate having to toss extras. I love authentic Chinese food, but there’s always a place for well made American Chinese, served by friendly local restaurants.

Google
Absolute best Chinese takeout in all of Williamsburg, Virginia!!! they are super fast with their food, always very kind and lovely, and the best cut of meats anywhere around. I’ve been coming here for almost 4 years, but I’ve never had any questionable bits of chicken or beef. Their dumplings are in house made and not bought from a Costco like some places.

Stone Family

Google
This place used to be our favorite. Haven’t been in about 6 months and the food is completely different. Our order of chicken fried rice had only some chicken, soy sauce and onion. Zero flavor! The chicken lo mein also flavorless. The dumplings and dumpling sauce are also different. Prices have gone up, which I wouldn’t complain about, if the food hadn’t tanked. We won’t be back.

Google
I eat hear about twice a week for the past 10 years only take out , But thats ok with me im just on a 30 min lunch break Food is always excellent

Norman Charette

Google
Delicious, generous portions, crispy egg roll, always friendly even when I come in late!

Lawrencia Moore

Google
They gave me raw shrimp egg roll i bought for work and told me thats the way its supposed to be so if i dont like it i should bring it for my money .....mean while i explained to them i ve nothing to eat since i will be at work from 7pm to 7am.folks jugde for yourself if egg rolls are supposed to have fresh dough like the once on my fingers.....i will never go there again but to everyone out there a word to a wise is enough

Google
This is a great place for fast affordable take out chinese food. The food is good, they are always pleasant, and have our order ready super fast. Can't ask for much more!

Yelp
I've been going to New China for years. The food is generally prepared consistently and it's pretty good for Americanized Chinese food. I always do carry out with the order almost always ready within 10-15 minutes. Service is fast and friendly. I noticed photos of their menu are very outdated so I've added a recent menu as of May 2025.

Yelp
Visiting for Christmas and took a chance, as it was the closest to our hotel. We had an order for six people, and we ordered online. It was ready when we arrived. There was an extra charge for the crunchy noodles for the sweet and sour soup, which typically are included, in my experience. All of the food tasted good; however, one order was completed incorrect...not noticed until we arrived home. Overall, it was a good experience and reasonable prices.

Yelp
Excellent. It's in a strip mall, so I thought New China might be one of those places like a Panda Express, mass produced food with a heat lamp, but I was HUNGRY and needed something to eat, so I went on inside. What I got was food cooked to order that was delicious and in very generous portions for a reasonable price. The dumplings are FANTASTIC. Not just the dumplings, though....I've returned again and again and everything has been wonderful. I am so happy to have found good Chinese food at a reasonable price in Williamsburg. The family that runs the store is very organized and all of my orders are correct, carefully packed, and still hot when I get home. I find myself craving their food all the time! Thank you, New China!

Owen H.

Yelp
Good Chinese food and quick courteous service. Typical low overhead small strip mall Chinese restaurant, so don't expect anything fancy, but good value. Had Egg Drop soup along with Chicken Lo mein and shrimp fried rice. Would recommend each.

Yelp
I live in Richmond and have driven here just for the dumplings. These little morsels are honestly my favorite dumpling I have ever eaten. I hope and pray they one day tell me the type or how to make the dipping sauce. I'm salivating writing the review. The dough is thick and the filling has a small heat to it. I always get them steamed. The dipping sauce is a tangy vinegar and ginger mixture with some chili flakes in the mix. Any time I'm in williamsburg I'll place an order for four containers. That's 32 dumplings and I'll eat them all no shame. Go. Now. Eat. Dumplings.
google avatar

Kelsey T.

Yelp
The food at New China is always delicious. I love the crab rangoon, shrimp egg rolls, shrimp egg foo young. The best Chinese food in tow.
google avatar

Layla S.

Yelp
Fast service and good food for the price. Would definitely recommend to try for yourself.

Elaine S.

Yelp
I didn't have high hopes for this little strip mall restaurant, but I really wanted hot and sour soup. I figured I could add chili, because the chances of finding actually spicy Chinese food in Williamsburg are pretty slim. I am thrilled to be wrong! The delicious broth, filled with tofu and mushrooms, actually made my lips tingle! I also ordered some Singapore mei fun, which was also surprisingly (for Williamsburg) spicy, and had so many bits of chicken, pork, and shrimp that I was almost wishing for more noodles. I do wish the curry powder had been cooked a bit more before the noodles were added, because the curry was a little raw tasting. The leftovers reheated really well, though. The restaurant was spotless, and the kitchen is visible, and looked organized and clean. Service was friendly and efficient, and while I waited the few minutes my order took, several people who were obviously regulars picked up orders. I will absolutely be back, and try other spicy options, plus the dumplings that everyone seemed to be ordering.

Yelp
This is the BEST Chinese food in the entire Williamsburg. You Will Thank Me Later. Tell Em Blanco Sent Ya

Suzanne Dana, Realtor D.

Yelp
Their food is generally pretty good. I usually get the lunch combo. Nothing to write home about but tasty.
google avatar

Nick S.

Yelp
Our second time returning here. Cheap owner wanted to charge me 50 cent each for hot oil. I will not patronize this restaurant. Many choices around here. No sign anywhere saying extra charge for hot oil.
google avatar

Austin H.

Yelp
Hot and sour soup, dumplings, and general tsao's were very good. Singapore Mei Fun was very good, too. There were complaints from some about the egg drop soup. I thought it was fine.

Gail I.

Yelp
Got beef and mushroom. It was 90% mushroom and very few pieces of beef. The the boneless ribs were very chewy and tough. Food in general is fair

Kevin K.

Yelp
When I picked up my order there was a line out the door. Good sign! 4 chicken wings (great too) and shrimp chow main large. Both were good and great value. The chow main did not come in a box, rather a full large soup container filled to the top!
google avatar

Dave S.

Yelp
Clean and friendly is the first notice when stepping into this small place. I think I counted three booths for those wishing to eat-in so carry-out is clearly their bread and butter. Got the Green Jade Delight, Hunan Beef and Fried Dumplings. All were very, very tasty. The beef had a chewy, yet firm texture that matched well with the crisp and fresh broccoli. The green veggies in the Jade delight were also cooked to a perfect crispness and the sauce was a little like the hunan sauce, without any spiciness. Great stuff. Would go again without considering other options.

Yelp
The best Chinese food I've ever eaten and 63 years everything taste so fresh They give you very healthy portions I've never been disappointed in anything I've gotten from new China I highly highly recommend
google avatar

L J.

Yelp
Just moved into the neighborhood and ordered take-out from New China. Was pleasantly surprised at how fresh and delicious our food was. The Hunan Chicken had big pieces of white meat chicken and a nice spicy sauce. The Sesame Chicken was tender and just the right amount of sweetness. The egg rolls were huge(!) and so delicious as were the spring rolls. We were very happy with our meal!
google avatar

Philip N.

Yelp
The food is good and the owners are amazing. However the oe person that is not of Asian decent is very dismissive and nasty to customers. This should be addressed or she should work in the cooking area

Allison B.

Yelp
They got our order wrong, blamed it on me, and their only resolution was for me to drive it back (40 min round trip). The chicken was then very dry. Very disappointed when we have been a faithful customer for years.

Randy M.

Yelp
I avoid Chinese takeout at all costs. But about once a year, usually because everyone else wants it I'm forced to go along. The only thing I specifically ordered was wonton soup, someone else picked the rest. And the rest was; egg drop soup, egg rolls, chicken with cashews, beef fried rice, and sweet and sour pork. The soups were surprisingly the highlight with the wonton soup being probably the best I've had from a take out joint, seriously. The egg rolls were good and the sweet and sour pork was also way better than the typical Chinese takeout. The chicken with cashews had an abundance of broccoli stalks and only tasted of the "brown sauce" that covers 50% of all takeout dishes, but the chicken was very tender so a passable dish. The fried rice was an embarrassment, they would have gotten a single star for that rice. Not one grain of that rice saw a wok at any point. Looks like they just threw some soy sauce on rice and mixed it with some beef and onion. See uploaded picture "not fried rice"

Ethan C.

Yelp
Your standard Chinese carry out joint. I got the lunch special of garlic chicken, fried rice, and the egg roll. The chicken was tasty and the sauce was delicious. The fried rice was really plain but that's kinda expected. Egg roll was good and the food was ready in about 10 mins. For $7 it's a great deal.

Dorian G.

Yelp
We had beef szechwan twice this past week. Once with rice and then with lo mein. Wonderful tender beef! Just the right level of spice and the vegetables were delicious. We'll be back !! BTW, they also have brown rice.
google avatar

Shelly M.

Yelp
Food is always tasty and well prepared. It's your usual Chinese takeout inside, but that's what you should expect. They do have tables to sit if you want to eat in, but there is not a full dining area. Staff is always friendly. I've never had a negative experience with anyone working here. They prepare food fast, but do not falter in quality. This is our go-to Chinese takeout place in Williamsburg. They are quality for takeout for sure. I highly recommend. The only thing I could complain about is they don't deliver!
google avatar

Liz L.

Yelp
Ate here a lot when I worked in New Town. This place is just average overall... But for Williamsburg it's one of the better ones I guess. The bad: I don't recommend their lunch combos... They're mainly rice. You're better off just ordering the Pint size from the regular menu. Their fried rice is incredibly disappointing too. There's nothing in it, it's too moist and it has no flavor. The good: Clean kitchen. The chicken wings are my absolute favorite and I recommend everyone try them! Better than majority of takeout spots'. Lightly battered, MTO and juicy. I can taste turmeric and a touch of five spice. They have Beef Ho Fun (pan fried flat rice noodle dish) which many other takeouts don't have. It's pretty decent.

Yelp
I placed an order with DoorDash and when my order got here I checked it and part of my order was missing. I called new China to let them know it was missing and the girl on the phone questioned if I actually looked in the bag, she corrected me saying she put it on top. Most likely she put it in a wrong bag. She then kept yelling to someone else about the wrong order, asked me several times if the order wasn't in there. Then she said well you can come get a new one. I informed her the only reason I did DoorDash was because I had family in town and I couldn't leave. Then she yelled again to someone in the store and came back in again telling me I could come in and get another one. I informed her no I couldn't and that angina this is why I had it delivered. Meanwhile I texted my dasher and she was awesome, picked up the order and brought it over. The girl from New China told me she would have to call me back that she had to ask her manager if they could replace the order they never put in my bag. Poor customer service! Food was ok!
google avatar

Moises L.

Yelp
First and last time there; fried house special rice taste was bad, vegetables were hard. jumbo fried shrimp not fresh. Fried chicken wings were ok.

Frank F.

Yelp
I'm a local. Of the four fast food Chinese restaurants in the immediate 23188 zip area, this one is the worst. I go there occasionally only for convenience. Today, they out did themselves ! "Special lunch menu" - spicy orange chicken - Not spicy, more breading than chicken, meat "stringy", plastic fork could not penetrate outside coating; pretty close to inedible. White rice....geeez, at least make an attempt to remove the big clumps! Egg drop soup was warm, not hot, otherwise O.K. Dry noodles in pkg were soggy/stale.

Tammara H.

Yelp
The Food was not good at all! Very Disappointed ! I will not be returning to order any more Food from the restaurant. The Rice was burnt 5 small shrimps and the egg roll was dry .

Yelp
Yum. As you can see, I have hit the restaurants in Williamsburg. Nothing like finding a good Chinese food restaurant. I have visited this one, also, too many times. We have gotten a fair variety of dinners from them by this point and noone in the family has been disappointed. "This is REALLY GOOD" is usually the description. We've tried Garlic Chicken, Chicken with broccholi, General Tso's, Sesame Chicken, Beef w broccholi, Lo Mein and my personal favorite...boneless spare ribs. If you like boneless spare ribs then you know how hard they can be to find---and if you find them they may not be all that good. These have yet to disappoint me and I've ordered them enough to know. They are excellent. The egg rolls are also excellent. That can also be something difficult to find but they have really good ones. I think it's fairly priced---the lunch ends up being the best deal as the portions are pretty much the same, just a little cheaper. If you are looking for good Chinese in Williamsburg, I'd definitely check this place out. As a side note there are two other Chinese restaurants in town Top China--at the corner of Richmond Rd (way up) and Centerville Rd that I have heard is owned by cousins that own New China. I have eaten there and found the menu to be EXACTLY the same and the food (only tried it once) was just as good. I have seen a second Top China at the corner of Rt. 199 and John Tyler Hwy in a strip mall but have never eaten there but assume they are the same owners. I would give that a try if you're in that neighborhood as well.
google avatar

William L.

Yelp
This is a pretty awesome place! I really like there General Tso' chicken! I'm from NY and I notice that the sauce they use is quite different then the NY Chinese restaurants. It's lighter but feels healthier. I wish I could go back again. Pretty neat! The pricing is affordable too!. Plus, this is a take-out restaurant, we really can't all have P.F. Changs even though, I think this place serves better. =]
google avatar

Sunana G.

Yelp
Ordered out from this place while on vacation...big mistake. We were told the food would be delivered within 30 minutes, but ended up waiting closer to an hour. Mind you our resort was only 5 minutes away. When the food did arrive it was nothing to write back home about. It was bland. The only plus was that the portions were a good size. Not eating here again.
google avatar

Jacob O.

Yelp
First of all, this is primarily a take-out chinese restaurant, so set your expectations accordingly. That said, it is my favorite one in the area. The food is fresh, and the people working are friendly and efficient. If you like spice, even if it says spicy on the menu, be sure to ask for it extra spicy. They cater their spice level to their Williamsburg clientele, but you can't really blame them for that.
google avatar

Steven P.

Yelp
Good Chinese for eat in or take out, good lunch specials for $4.95 which includes soup or egg roll. I order the chicken low mien and my daughter got the shrimp with lobster sauce. Both were excellent.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Huh? Based on the previous reviews, I went to New China expecting a passable Chinese meal. But this isn't really even a restaurant; more of a fast food joint. Shoddy interior with booths like at a Taco Bell. The kind of place you go when you are either broke or drunk. If neither of these is the case, I can't recommend it...
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
I debated between giving this place 2 or 3 stars. I figured I would give three to be on the gracious side. The General Tso didn't taste like any other general Tso I've ever had. And the rice was SUPER bland! Literally no seasoning on the fried rice at all. The prices are very decent, but the food just isn't as well flavored as other places.
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
We followed recommendations on here and got takeout from this place while on vacation in Williamsburg in March 2012. Food was very bland and we weren't even given any sauces for our egg rolls.
google avatar

Kyle R.

Yelp
My last stop for trying all Chinese restaurants in this town. the food was too salty and most of the food went into the garbage rather than the refrigerator (I love leftover Chinese food). We tried the eggrolls it was soggy, greasy and bland...
google avatar

Debra G.

Yelp
Today we came in to New China.on a whim. It was close to where we were and we wanted Chinese. We read some good reviews and thought we would try it out. There was a great deal for buy 3 get one free. Sounded good so we ordered it. I don't eat rice so I asked them to put the rice on the side in a separate container. They said it was not possible. One container was all you get at New China. The food was halfway decent but the customer service was lacking. Not sure if we would come back. The person in charge was very rude.

Lisa J.

Yelp
Very nasty meat taste old and the peas in my house special fried rice were hard this place deserve zero stars, friendly reminder people always stick with what you know we not ever come to this place again
google avatar

Todd W.

Yelp
Being originally from New York, our taste in Chinese take-out is rather snobbish, but this is as good as it gets in Virginia. Especially for 'store-front' Chinese take-out. You can see right down the cook's line into the kitchen and it is always organized and clean. General Tso's is never spicy enough wherever I get it, but they will 'kick it up' for you if you ask. The lunch deals are hard to beat (buy 3 get one free) and are less than $6 to start with.

Hannah L.

Yelp
The food was okay. It's just typical Chinese takeout food. We ordered the moo goo gai pan and general tso's chicken. It was ready quickly. I found a piece of what looked like steel wool in my food after I cut my tongue and the price that I was charged was not what was listed on the menu at all.

Connie J.

Yelp
I ordered carry out at 3:45 and stopped by at 4:00 to pick it up. When I walked in, the cook was sitting in the customer area and only then did he get up to prepare our food. Our chicken egg foo young was provided with no brown gravy, an obvious mistake. Customer service needs improvement.

Charlene B.

Yelp
Yum really good. The lunch specials also full of meat cant eat one by myself always have leftovers. Ask for pork or chicken fried rice as the white is plain.

Maggie O.

Yelp
I am convinced this place is under new management, has better food vendors, or something's changed because they have improved immensely. I gave up on them awhile ago until recently when I wanted something cheap for lunch (they do have a great deal where you buy 3 lunch meals at around $5/meal you get the 4th free & I have a few mouths to feed. Plus I usually get two meals out of 1 lunch serving). Anyhow, I gave them another chance since they're conveniently located to me, and I am so glad I did! The fried dumplings were perfect & I honestly drank the sauce it came with on the side (pricey app, but you get 8 fat dumplings. I usually prefer delicate dumplings closer to dim sum, but these are an exception). The orange chicken, shrimp and veggies (no sauce since I hate white sauce so I add my own from home), beef & broccoli, and Singapore chow mei fun were all good. Eggrolls were crisp, not oily or under cooked. Hot & sour was good as well. Only complaint was requested extra spicy beef and broccoli wasn't spicy on any level. Also, (and this is a pet peeve of mine), moo shu dishes are served with tortilla-like pancakes as they are in most Chinese takeout joints these days. Other than that, their staff is friendly, and they have been consistently good the last few times I have been there. New China is a place I will go to whenever I'm craving Chinese takeout!

Katie L.

Yelp
The worse place I've ever been to, prices so high, and a cashier really unpleasent person. I couldn't beraly understand him, and I asked him to repeat what he just said, He got so mad, started speaking his owned language and making faces, I just left this place and I will never ever come back.

Ali I.

Yelp
We have been doing business here for over a year, as it is the closest to our house. We eat here a lot. The food is hit or miss. Sometimes it is good, and other times it is horrible. I would say at least half of the time we have something missing from our order. Most of the time we just don't even bother going back for it. But, if the woman is working, she will refuse to give you your missing items, insisting that she packs each order herself and knows for a fact that it was correct. She basically accuses you of lying. Tonight was the last time. She yelled at my husband and said "No trust". We won't be back.

Deb H.

Yelp
I have to agree with the first review that the place is clean, however I don't agree that the food is good. I usually get my take out from Peking, which I give 5 out of 5 stars, but I decided I would try something a bit closer to home this time. I ordered chicken fried rice and beef lo mein. The chicken fried rice was horrible! It had a very small amount of chicken with a few cooked and chopped onions. It had no egg or veggies of any kind. It wasn't seasoned either. It tasted like I was eating plain rice with boiled chicken pieces. The beef lo mein was just ok. If I had to rate the chicken on a scale of 1 to 10 it would be a zero and the lo mein would be a 5. The prices are just the same as Peking, so if you are looking for good food you should go to Peking. Saigon Pearl, which just opened, has really good chicken fried rice and the best fried egg rolls in town.

Diane U.

Yelp
I ordered General Tso for lunch today "to go". When I got the take out container I noticed it as being half the size of typical takeout containers that I receive I am from Florida this would be my first experience purchasing chinese food here. Once I opened the container... I see what is supposed to be fried rice looking more like brown rice. My expectation of fried rice is carrots, peas, onions, possibly scrambled eggs with roast pork. Their version of fried rice was white rice tossed with soy sauce to give color. The chicken was hard and overcooked and tasted burnt. All I wanted was your typical lunch version of chinese food and I got something that was in my opinion the furthest from chinese food I have ever had more like a bad cooking american person trying to cook chinese. If I had it to do all over again I would have opened and checked the food before paying. I would not go to this restaurant if you want your traditional chinese menu.
