Where to Stay in Rome When You Visit (Updated 2025)

"I appreciate New Generation Rome Hostel for its unbeatable location — just a 10-minute walk from Termini Station and the Colosseum — offering decent dorms and a nice common area to meet people; otherwise it’s a pretty standard hostel." - Matthew Kepnes

Everything was perfect for us. The check in and check out were very simple and the staff member was kind and spoke fluent English as well. The room was clean as was the bathroom with a bidet and large shower space. If you want to shower you will need your own towel and soaps including hand soap (we had hand sanitizer). I would come here again, especially for the good price for a private room in Rome. Having read some other reviews, I am sad to hear other people have not had a similar experience. I wonder if there is a significant difference between booking a private or shared room. For us, the air conditioning was operational. The location is good, you need to walk to the Cavour metro B or Termini for Metro A which is ideal for tourists. The surrounding neighbourhood is known for the availability of Indian and Chinese restaurants as well as Italian restaurants.

The only good thing is its location, which almost makes you forget the many downsides. Cleanliness is kept at a bare minimum. The rooms open with keys that feel like they're from the Middle Ages, and the people at the reception act like they're stuck in that era too. The air conditioning was working in my room, but several people I talked to said theirs wasn't. Definitely not for young travelers - I stayed with two elderly women who behaved oddly. NO INTERNET AND NO ELEVATOR. I didn't expect the room to be exactly like the photos online, but the difference was almost 180 degrees. If location is all you care about, fine - but in Rome, where transport is cheap, there are dozens of better options. Avoid this place.

The hostel is fine in terms of the rooms and their size, however there is no AC and it says there is a ceiling fan but that barely works, so i would not stay here in the summer. Had 2 very poor sleeps due to the heat. Also the bathroom was not very clean and had a smell and the bed sheets were not very clean. Good location only 10 mins walk from the train station but that’s about it.

I was shocked when I found a hostel for this price with such great reviews and now I know why it was such a great price. When I checked in and was given a key to a room on the top floor, I first had to bring my luggage up 3 flights of stairs because the elevator was out of order. Then, once I got to my room I came to find out there is no AC on the top floor. Everyone had the windows open which meant bugs were biting everywhere. Except for my room. I was in a room with a door window that was sealed shut meaning no air flow. I went downstairs to ask for assistance in which the guy at the desk said they couldn’t do anything about the situation. The next day I went down to ask about the possibility of switching to a room with a window that opens and was told they couldn’t help me. For me, the no AC during a heat wave is a huge deal which I was unaware of prior to arriving and the staff were completely unhelpful. The facilities in the Hostel were fine but I would never come back especially during the summer. I left covered in sweat and bug bites.

The rooms themselves are nice enough. Modern and clean. I didn't love the location (as someone who has since been to Rome several times). The front desk guy was not helpful as I struggled to open my door with their key for about 10 minutes (not an exaggeration). Had to help other people in my room get in at 2am which is not their fault but the hostels. The worst part is that their locker system was not great as they gave me the keys to someone else's locker which held her passport which is a huge invasion of privacy.

The only good thing about this place is its location. It’s perfectly located to the touristy places like the colosseum and trevi fountain. That being said, the rest of the experience was HORRIBLE. The staff are incredibly disrespectful (from the second I entered the hostel to check in they were insulting me and making fun of me in Italian, which for their misfortune I understand). We’d have to drop our keys every time we left, which also included the key to a locker (you couldn’t put your own lock on it), and whenever one had to approach them to request them or just drop them off, we’d be greeted with attitude, having them thrown to us as if we were being a bother. Cleanliness is alright, could have a better job but everything around isn’t the best. AC was not working whatsoever even though we asked the front desk (specifically the guy with the glasses) and we were dismissed with a “that sucks”. Everything is an extra charge: do you want to leave your bags after check out? It has to be €5 in cash. Towels? €7 for 1 towel. No soap, the beds were uncomfortable, bed sheets not too clean… and although it does give the vibe that it might be a youth hostel, it is not whatsoever. You could easily be paired with two 50+ year old men alone and god forbid you tell them you didn’t feel too safe with them because they’ll charge you €25 to change rooms, even after you give them evidence that the person staying with you is being creepy and making you uncomfortable. No wifi, again no AC (we were averaging 36 degrees) and it just was a bad experience overall. Please save your money, save your patience, and solo girl travelers, save yourself from a problem and book somewhere else. This place is not it whatsoever.

I was staying at the roof top and I couldn’t sleep the whole night. It was so hot that it was impossible to breathe. There’s a really small window that does no good. At last I had to tell the receptionist, he said there’s no ac in any room. Also the guy who stay at the reception at night is super rude. The other two was so nice and fun to talk to but that guy literally ruined the whole trip for me. He’s the reason I’m giving low stars. I’ve stayed at so many hostels in my life. I’ve literally slept with big spiders, at dirty sheets but I’ve never got to the reception desk and complained. Because I know that’s what a hostel like. But it was so impossible to sleep at night so I had to ask him if there’s any available rooms. He said there wasn’t but he was rude and upset. I was looking for another hostel to stay at 2 am. Do not recommend

The price and location are the best things about this place. However, the way they try to get some extra money from you on anything and everything is ridiculous. When I arrived they wanted to charge me 3 euros because I didnt check in online, as they were supposed to send me an email which they did not. When I showed them my mail box with no email from them they were like okay then, no charge. You pay for towels, soap, late check in, late check out... The rooms on the third floor looked nothing like the pictures. It is basically a long corridor with twin rooms. and bathrooms. There was an AC in the rooms as well as in the corridor, which was a life saver. you get a key for a locker but not for the room, but I had no issues with it. One big issue was that the door was kind of seethrough and during the night the lights were on in the corridor, so when you are light sensitive bring a sleep mask. The second biggest issue was that there is not hot water. I dont know if this is only at the last floor, but no hot or warm water. We were kind of lucky it was 32 degrees outside. Other than that the lask floor was newly renovated it seemed, clean and new. There is also no soap in the bathroom when you want to wash your hands. Guys at the reception were very friendly and helpful. Overall good value for money.
