Where to Stay in Rome When You Visit (Updated 2025)

"I appreciate New Generation Rome Hostel for its unbeatable location — just a 10-minute walk from Termini Station and the Colosseum — offering decent dorms and a nice common area to meet people; otherwise it’s a pretty standard hostel." - Matthew Kepnes

I’ve never been more conflicted with a hostel before. My main reason for 2 stars is because the hostel doesn’t provide any soap. You have to pay for a towel set to receive soap. I don’t want towels, I just want soap. The soap you have to pay for is cheap hotel soap you get for free normally. Soap should be provided in any public spaces and I think that policy is ridiculous and quite gross. The other downside of this hostel was that there was 0 hot water the entire time we stayed here. This hostel charges a lot of fees for everything and I think turning in your key to the front desk every time you leave is a little strange. For the pros: the location is easy enough to get everywhere, the room we had was nice, bed was comfortable, and the staff were all helpful and friendly. Nothing bad to say about the people there.

Hostel is totally average. Unfortunately had a cold shower for both the days I was there. Also seems very strange that you have to hand in your keys every time you leave the hostel (including the keys to your locker), I have never had this before. Beds are fine but the pillows are really bad. Would only recommend it if this is your only option. Beware as well that the check in is online and you will be charged if you don’t check in prior to arriving! Unfortunately they also do not guarantee that people on one booking will be placed in the same hostel room (this seems so ridiculous!). The whole system is online and I believe in a “first in, first served” type booking system so whoever checks in earliest gets bed 1, second to check in gets assigned bed 2 etc. This means that a solo female could be placed in a room with all other males and the staff do not plan rooms to make people feel more comfortable. This may not be a problem for some but worth mentioning. The location is the only redeeming factor.

I do NOT recommend! Scary locations at night. Rude and arrogant staff. Broken plugs nothing to charge, did nothing to help with this, literally did not care. Little lighting in shared dorms made me feel uncomfortable as a woman sharing with men. Dirty bathrooms, old bunkbeds, nothing like the photos. Not worth your money and your energy. My biggest hostel mistake to have booked with them. Never had issues with any other hostels in the past, this one was my first bad experience, and I have a lot of experience travelling in hostels by myself, and in different continents…! It’s also on the dodgy side of “city centre” next to Termini station full of junkies and homeless people. Please stay safe, especially my girlies out there 💕

Cheap decent accommodation. Best of the worst kinda situation. Things were fine enough and cleaners did a good job but maintenance could be improved. Can just see it being mouldy in the bathrooms in a year or two (was a tiny bit icky already). Other things like not having a proper curtain for the street window and not having hot water really impacted my enjoyment of the place. Maybe the hot water in the tank had just run out, but it was late in the evening and early in the morning so that's puzzling. But also if it was just a hot water tank that kinda sucks too.

Review: New Generation Hostel The location is excellent: about 10 minutes on foot both from Termini and Cavour, walking at a normal pace. The soundproofing in the rooms is surprisingly good. Beds are comfortable, with clean linens (you make your own bed), plus each bed has its own reading light and power socket. Every bed also comes with a locker with a key, and there is no extra charge for using it. Even better: each locker has a power outlet inside, so you can charge your devices while you're out. The room design is simple and pleasant. The shared bathroom for our 6-bed dorm had a standing shower, toilet, bidet, sink, mirror and even a hairdryer — which was a very nice touch. Great price-quality ratio overall. Reception staff were friendly. There is a kitchen available for cooking: three stoves (each with two burners), two sinks, and four small fridge compartments. There are cutting boards, a few pots and pans, but very few plates, and no mugs or glasses at all. Also, there are no forks or spoons — the staff explained that guests keep taking them. So definitely bring your own utensils. Another small drawback: there is no electric kettle in the kitchen. To make tea or coffee, you need to ask reception for hot water, or boil water in a pot, which is slower and less convenient. There is a small internal courtyard where you can relax, have a coffee, or just take a break. Note that the hostel rules say you cannot eat or drink inside the rooms. Conclusion: You will not regret choosing this hostel if: -you are traveling on a budget, -you want to stay close to the center, -and you bring your own bowl, fork/spoon, or mug.

Great location and had no problems with the staff at front desk. Shower would have hot water for 1 min or less then gets cold and I had to wait for another minute or two to get hot water again. Happened all 3 days. Towels for rent are expensive and old. Bathroom floor wasn't cleaned up every day. For the amount of rooms they have the bathroom should be cleaned at least twice a day. You have to leave the safe keys with the front desk when you leave the hostel Bed, mattress and bed sheets are fine

The room is exceptional! It is clean, cozy, spacious and has so much atmosphere. The staff is friendly, the location is great! I have no idea why there are so many bad reviews, they almost made me cancel but I am so glad I didn't. We stayed in a private room for two, tho. Maybe the dorms are not so good, I don't know.

Quite bare bones but comfortable enough for a couple of nights. The kitchen is hardly usable though because it’s not clean, otherwise no complaints. Note: no towels/shower gel/hand wash
