Our original intention was to visit the Georgia O'Keefe Museum. But after thinking about it, and finding out NMMoA was already open, instead of having to walk further AND wait another hour to do something, AND it cost less (by $1 but still....), we decided to spend our morning at the New Mexico Museum of Art (also...we assumed there would also be more variety at than at the O'Keefe Museum).
Ticket sales went a little slow, but they had literally just opened for the day. So while we waited our turn, a staff member gave us a rundown of the current exhibits, as well as the lowdown on the Culture Pass (NM residents...get ON this!! 100% worth the money even if you only go to 2 of the 16 places!)
I have to say, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit here! It isn't a huge museum but it packs a punch. After paying admittance, you walk in to the courtyard area. It is surrounded by murals and it just a lovely outdoor space. It is lovelier than I am making it sound, I promise.
You enter at the other side of the courtyard to get to the current exhibits. We started to the left, where down the hall was "Be With Me" (a small exhibition of big paintings) which I quite enjoyed, and "Conversations in Painting" of contemporary works (one of my favorite styles). There is also a small sculpture garden outside.
They have small, fold-up chairs should you need/want to sit while taking in the art.
On the second floor, a Cady Wells exhibit was set up. Turns out...that is now *also* an artist I quite like. Next to that was the "Light Tight" exhibit.
We went back to the first floor after this for "Imagining New Mexico," with pieces from the permanent collection. Overall, a wonderfully varied display of art and styles! Definitely something for everyone!
The highlights of the museum:
- the building itself is not your traditional museum building. It has Southwest character which adds to the exhibition displays.
- BOLD COLORS!! As in...the walls displaying the art. I made note to my fella that this was the only museum I had been to that had colored walls backing the works. And not only colored walls...but RED and TEAL and ORANGE. I loved it!
- It is interactive! Don't pass it up, play along!
If you are in Santa Fe and wanting to visit one of the many, many museums there, I absolutely recommend this one!
