"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe?New Road Hotel has been designed with a hip, young clientele in mind, but there isn’t a whiff of pretension to the industrial decor. Bare walls, parquet floors, and iron-framed windows mingle with bright pops of color and '70s-style tilework. What's the backstory?Whitechapel is the heart of London’s East End and the city’s Bangladeshi community. Three local Bangladeshi brothers opened the New Road hotel in 2018 in the former textile factory where their father used to work. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? The light-hearted industrial theme carries through to the rooms. The least expensive are called Pocket; although they're tiny, they have large TVs, rain showers, king-size beds, and ample hanging space. You’re not supposed to stay in your room anyway—there’s a library, game room, and busy bar downstairs, plus yoga sessions on the roof. Is there a charge for Wi-fi – and is the quality good? It's free and fast. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at?Mr. White’s English Chophouse has been devised by none other than Marco Pierre White, with lots of red leather and velvet, reasonably priced rib eye steaks, and perfect burgers. What type of travelers will you find here?Non-stuffy businessmen, young weekenders looking for a night out, and local teenagers popping in for a bowl of Fruit Loops. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? The hotel is busy and relaxed, much like its surroundings. In this multicultural part of town, you’ll find East End boozers beside sari stalls, and you’re as close to The City as you are the bars of Dalston and Shoreditch. Any other hotel features worth noting? You'll either love or hate the hipster details; say, a cereal-based cocktail of Rice Krispies, white chocolate, marshmallows, and vanilla milk. Instead of in-room phones, you’re given a WhatsApp number to text. Bottom line: Worth it? Why?This is a cool—but not too try hard—hotel in the real East End of London." - Laura Goulden
