I transferred from Baruch to City Tech, mainly to change majors since my AA is technical and they honored almost all my credits. Besides that, my initial impressions of this school are less than savory, it feels like a huge step down. Walking in feels like a prison or high-security facility. I'm prior military, and the building reminds me of Fort Bragg or a police station (think bland grey/brown colors, concrete walls, cameras everywhere, etc.). I can look past the cosmetic stuff so let's get to the meat and potatoes of it all.
To get anything done with the administration (registrar, bursar, etc.) , you literally have to chase them down in person or your papers will get "lost" in the shuffle. This seems to happen at every CUNY school, but there is a pervasive "I don't give a **** attitude" from alot of people that work here that's disturbing. It's is a PITA to get the classes you need to advance too. I have literally heard the words "There's nothing we can do" so many times, it's infuriating, at all levels of administration from top to bottom. There's really no "go-to" person or higher up that can get **** done, everything here moves at a snail's pace. Truly a bureaucratic nightmare.
I'm in year 3, and most students that have made it this far actually care about their schoolwork, so I have no issues there. As far as teachers go, ratemyprofessor is your best friend. For every 1 good teacher, there are like 3 bad ones, so take that for what it's worth and filter them out(this is true for any CUNY school).
Resource-wise, this is my biggest pet-peeve with this school and why I docked them to 2 stars. At Baruch, there are a TON of resources dedicated to help you getting employed. Seeing recruiters at the school weekly is a normal event. You could realistically come in prepared, resume in hand, and land a job/internship in between classes. There's a giant ass library that opens late, unlimited computer time, you're given plenty of tools to succeed, and no one bothers you while you're working on papers and whanot. I've had the joy of taking evening classes and being taught by Columbia/NYU professors/alumni that moonlight at Baruch for extra dough (my best classroom memories and biggest struggles/triumphs came from engaging with these teachers). The regular Baruch staff of teachers (Ratemyprofessor is your friend here), are also pretty good.
At City Tech, **** my life, you only get 2.5hrs a day on the computer(computers that always try to kick you off every 10 minutes), half the books you can't take out the library, and they charges fees for the tiniest of infractions(ie. using a book INSIDE the library for 2+ hours). The librarians love calling security to kick everyone out so they can close shop early. Working on a paper, doing a project, studying? They don't care. I've been to a few workshops here regarding jobs/interviews, not impressed by any of them. They're designed for high school students with 0 life experience, not for someone looking for a competitive edge. Setting up students for failure is not cool. Recruiters from the Army, NYPD, and other agencies flock to this school, it's easy pickings. Nothing wrong with those jobs, but it kind of tells you how good this school is at preparing you for competing in the corporate world. None of the experiences with my teachers here have been memorable or noteworthy, which is sad, but it is what it is.
I'm only here to get my degree to go with my work experience and get on with my life. If you're straight out of high school and looking to grow, there's better options out there. This school is high school 2.0 . You can do better than that.
