13 Must-Try Traditional Japanese Foods - AFAR

"A high-end dining room on the 52nd floor that pairs dramatic city views with a wide selection of prime wagyu from multiple prefectures; the marbled beef is a highlight, and the restaurant’s prominence was boosted by its appearance in pop culture." - Yukari Sakamoto

Before renovation I came for the holiday lunch buffet. The plan was golden week only and included a glass of champagne. My first time came, it need some time to find out the restaurant. View gorgeous, food ok, presentation added much points. Everything was beautiful. Highly recommend baked ricotta cheese, cheesecake, Vanilla ice-cream, sourdough bread, and should have the Champagne. Services really good, but some dining corners were strange such as mine was just one step near the stairs, and the wash room was quite small for a 5 star Hotel. Other than that, the dining experience was great in a beautiful environment with beautiful food. It's worth for it. 2/5/24 JGW 🍽🍾

When in Tokyo, one must at least try the weekend brunch for once in this elegant room. Not just because it sits on the 52nd floor of the Park Hyatt Hotel, the food is also immaculately prepared with lots of options on the buffet line. You will be moved to another room where the musicians are performing for your dessert and drinks if preferred. Staffs are welcoming and friendly. Service wise, they might want to pay a little more attention. For my experience, my empty plate wasn’t clear after I return to my table. 9900¥ after tax per person is well worth the dining experience and the view (even on a rainy day)

Top class restaurant with highly professional staff members. Lunch menu offers a buffet with an entree of your choice. Appetizers & dessert were so good as well. A must visit restaurant with one of the most amazing 360 views of Tokyo. Priceless experience.

I’ve had lunch here twice now and the food was amazing! You get a appetizer buffet which was really delicious - there was a variety of food to choose from which was all really tasty. The main course was also really good (had steak). The flavor of all the food was amazing. To top that off they do complimentary message plates if you are celebrating something which was a pleasant surprise for the birthday boy. The cakes and ice cream were also really good! The service was amazing too. And the view is just incredible. I also liked that we moved to the lounge after finishing the main course where we could see more of Tokyo and eat sweets and have some tea. This is definitely worth a try.

Holy cow, What a great dinner and view from the 52nd floor! 1st off, reservation is a must. We booked our dinner a month online in advanced to get the best seats and time. It was also our 2nd day of 2 weeks in Tokyo and our wedding anniversary. At first it was a little hard to find your way up to the restaurant (few elevators, through a library and another restaurant) but we made it. With some pre planning or asking, you can find your way easily. Once you have arrived, the views are to die for. Once you come out the elevator your are greeted by staff but it’s hard to pay attention with those views that instantly hit you. Total 360 degree views. amazing! Our seats were up close to the view and we could just not keep our eyes off them. We had earlier opted for the Wagyu Tomahawk dinner which was way more than enough for 2 people. The steak was like bitting into a piece of butter, one of the best Wagyu dinners I’ve had. The drinks were tasty and strong. After dinner we headed over to the New York bar (one room over) and it being our wedding anniversary, the staff went above and beyond to come find us with sherbet desert and even writing “Happy Anniversary” in Japanese on chocolate. They even sat us in the same seats Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson sat in, from the movie Lost in Translation. The staff and service was 10/10 and very accommodating and on point. As I mentioned earlier, this bar was featured in the movie Lost in Translation and brief intro of Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown. If you want a very intimate, well presented, impeccable, and friendly service and staff, this is the place I highly recommend. *If you’re a smoker they have a sealed off room near the restrooms. Not sure how much longer that will be there so enjoy all of this nostalgic history while you can, as they are remodeling in 2024.

Decided to make a reservation here for my birthday and loved the ambience. We were seated with one of the best seats in the house! The buffet style starters as well as dessert course were delicious to say the least. Give the key lime pie a try if you can! For the main course we opted for the chick pea curry and seafood pasta! Both were so tasty. Thank you for the perfect end to our Tokyo trip!

We decided to dine here on our last night in Tokyo after a 3 week honeymoon. We reserved for a 6:30pm reservation a week in advance so we could see the skyline from daylight to night. And the view did not disappoint! However, just before leaving our hotel we realised there is a dress code, it's on the website so we should have known, but we didn't have that formal clothes with us so we muddled something together. It's generally smart dress, with Japanese in mainly business wear. We decided to order from the a la carte menu (but there is a set menu too) with a birthday gift budget of $250. We both ordered starters and main courses. My husband had steak which bumped the price up. I had two glasses of wine and my husband had one. However, including service charge we actually ended up spending $300. Overall our food was nicely cooked and everything tasted nice, but we both found it a little too rich. My bigger issue was my glass of Riesling was far too sweet, almost sickly. I expect if I see a Riesling on the menu of an upscale restaurant it will be dry, especially a California Riesling- but maybe my mistake for ordering it. Our only other slightly odd issue is it felt weird having modern European food with a California wine list in Japan.

It can only be 5 stars. This was my third visit to this restaurant (lunch), each time has been amazing. It is upmarket for what I am used to and they really control your movements, maybe due to Covid restrictions or because we are uncultured savages, you have to follow the meal flow strictly and the staff are super attentive. The buffet is the absolute best. Every single thing is fantastic and delightful to the palate, I’d eaten 2 plates full before my main even arrived. I was tempted to grab the bowls of ricotta cheese and bacon and trough them down. Salmon is fantastic as are all of the sauces and dressings available. My main today was the American sirloin with mash and asparagus. It was ok, not the best steak I’ve had but pretty damn good, just the right size as well. In the future I’d get the fish or chicken again. After all that food…. desert time!!!! Back to the buffet for amazing cakes, ice cream, pastries and all goodies! The staff will offer tea or coffee with your desert and it’s good stuff. It’s on the 52nd floor and offers an amazing view of Tokyo. You really feel the special environment of this restaurant. Great for dates, get togethers, celebrations or any damn reason you can think of. Just go. Cost is just over 7000yen per person. That is 1000% worth it for the food, service, location, everything. I’d pay 7000 just for the buffet lol. Use the bathrooms at the top of the first elevator….. super fancy.

Yelp
I was in Tokyo seeing my nephew off on a trip throughout Southeast Asia all the way to Australia. Not knowing much, his last night in Tokyo I decided to try the New York Grill. I definitely made the right choice . Beautiful entertainment, wonderful martinis, great yellowtail crudo appetizer!!! We both had steaks, which were superb. An order of Fries fried in duck fat and served with homemade catsup finished our main. DELISH!!!! Homemade apple pie with salted vanilla caramel ice cream sent us home with two big smiles. It's definitely high end, but quite an experience!!!!

Yelp
The setting is beautiful at night. What a skyline view. We were walked to our table from the podium and went by the open kitchen. It was a bustling kitchen and fun to see the action. Our server was very attentive and made good suggestions, like suggesting we share the Cesar salad rather than each get a salad. The food is what brings down the restaurant score. Our Cesar salad had romaine lettuce and croutons but the similarities between this Cesar and a NY Cesar end here. The dressing was slightly vinegary, pork belly was in the salad, cheese didn't seem like Parmesan and the salad had waaaayy too much dressing. Neither of us cared for the salad. My husband had the lamb and two little baby racks arrived. How cute! But not enough at the price. My pork chop was large and had good flavor. Mashed potatoes were again a bit vinegary, never had this flavor in potato. Sourdough bread was very good. While they try to be a NY grill feels like a strong interpretation added in. I would prefer standard if I am going to have non-Japanese meal. Pricing is very high.

Yelp
Have you seen Lost In Translation? Will this is the spot the bar was filmed at. The views are spectacular as is the food. I can finally say I've had a Kobe Wagyu now. Prices are VERY high, even for Japan, but that's what it is. Our waitress was kinda weird. She was hovering over me a lot and seemed confused about a few things. Still, the food and drinks were top notch. Did I mention the views? Overall, a great restaurant in Japan.

Yelp
Wow. What an experience. If this was the last meal of my life, I would have been at complete inner peace. You are 52 floors above Tokyo, with a complete 360 degree view. The view alone makes this worth it. My buddy and I walked in here on our last night in Tokyo with big expectations. Mostly because I was here years prior and it was a spiritual experience. I set his expectations crazy high, but they were still blown away. You first walk into the Park Hyatt on the ground floor, and it is a bit of a maze. You think to yourself, am I in the correct place? Yes, yes you are. Ask the front desk where the restaurant is, and they will direct you to the elevator. You take the elevator up about 40 or so floors. The door opens, and you will never be the same. It's like you are entering what you imagine heavens gates will be like, whatever that means to you. You are immediately engulfed with views of the ENTIRE skyline. I liken this to the first time you heard "Runaway" by Kanye West. Anyways, you take another elevator up to the 52nd floor to the restaurant where the views are even better. We were directed to our seat right next to a window with the skyline far beneath our feet. It just feels right. We had a preset menu and did the recommended wine pairing with it. As many others have mentioned, you come for the ambiance and views, but the food is an added bonus as the steak was delicious. After dinner, we were moved to the bar and grabbed a seat right next to the live performers. We sat there for hours ordering more drinks and just getting lost in the moment. It really doesn't get much better. Also, Lost in Translation is one of my favorite movies of all time so walking in the footsteps of Bill Murray and ScarJo was surreal. Come here at least once before you die.

Yelp
Scenic restaurant with delicious food! The vibes at this restaurant were classy and elegant. There were musicians playing jazz music as well which was nice to set the mood. Service was quick, friendly, and super classy. Our server also seemed to really know a lot about what goes in the dishes and where all the ingredients come from. Service at the time of my visit was in Japanese (March 19). I really liked the chicken breast! Even though the portion was small, that's kind of a given for fancy restaurants. But there is a buffet bar with lots of charcuterie food and desserts to make up for it! I was also shocked to see that there were wines from Contra Costa County and Napa County on the menu, small world! Definitely recommend this place!

Yelp
I've eaten at the lunch buffet twice, six years ago, and this past August. This particularly buffet is a good example of quality over quantity; as long as the kitchen gets most of what it does right, no need to overdo anything else. Specifically, I was a fan (both times) of the tomato bowl, house-made ricotta, and desserts area. They also have fish, meat, salads, and extras that you can order (the first time I was there, I tried Kobe and Matsusaka beef). Plus, it's Japan, so expect seasonally appropriate flavors. And if you're into views of urban sprawl, then the New York Grill has you way covered. My biggest complaint is that acoustics weren't particularly good. But the service helped make up for that a little bit.

Yelp
Located on the 52nd floor at the Park Hyatt hotel, this is the place to dine with a view. The views here are amazing. You can see Tokyo Tower when it's clear out. I made my reservations through email a month before dining here. We were a party of six with two kids. They were very accommodating with our girls. They don't have a kids menu, but they made this homemade pasta with bolognese sauce, which I have to say, they should put out on their regular menu. This was one of the best pasta dishes I ate. For appetizers, I shared the appetizer plate for two. It was really good. They give you three sample appetizers - Artisan Hokkaido Burrata (the best burrata cheese), Roast USDA Beef Prime Tenderloin and Bonito Crudo. Great way to taste several appetizer dishes. For steaks, I highly recommend getting their Wagyu steaks. They start around $100 for a steak which is expensive, but you are getting A5 quality steaks. My waiter recommended the Hokkaido Akaushi Sirloin. My steak melted in my mouth and was cooked a perfect medium rare. I can get USDA Prime steaks in the US, but not these Wagyu steaks. I ordered a custom chocolate cake for my daughter's birthday a month out. The cake and presentation was awesome. It really made her so happy. It was only $30 for the cake, so I highly recommend ordering it beforehand for special occasions.

Yelp
Going to eat American style food in non American countries has been hit and miss for me, but this restaurant, made famous by "Lost in Translation" stands on its own as a singular steakhouse experience anywhere. From terrific venues to top tier beef cooked perfectly, this was one of our top meals abroad ever. Considering the quality, venue, and service, the price was spot on. As are most Japanese restaurants the atmosphere was appropriately subdued with the background of jazz from the nearby bar but otherwise a beautiful and quiet venue. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a dinner experience.

Yelp
This place is famous for being featured in the movie Lost in Translation. I do have to say the view of the Tokyo skyline here is amazing. Food and drinks are expensive but is worth it considering the atmosphere. Good to come to take visitors from out of town or taking out business clients. I would come here again for drinks.

Yelp
Came here for the view. It was hard to find, we had to ask someone to help us. The view is incredible, you can see the whole city lit up which is very beautiful! We came here for drinks and one appetizer and if we came an hour later there would have been a cover charge. Drinks were good but overpriced. I got the cosmo and my husband got a martini. The appetizer was great! We ordered the sea urchin toast with wagyu beef. It was delicious!

Yelp
The New York Grill is a Must in Tokyo! Starting in the bar, the first thing you will notice is American size cocktails. They come with oishii snacks and The View! Then dinner -- you have to order steak, and when I say steak, I mean Japanese beef. We prefer what the Japanese call the sirloin, which to American's is the New York. All of their steaks are prepared sous vide and then finished on the grill to perfection. Typical steakhouse appetizers and sides. Excellent wine list. The service, like everywhere in Japan is exemplary.

Yelp
The New York Bar and Grill share the whole floor on the 52nd floor -- a bit hard to find for first timers esp. if you're not staying at the hotel (as we weren't). You first find the Hyatt entrance (look for the taxis), then the lobby floor, then the elevator to 41/45/52. 41 also has their Girandole French restaurant. The New York Bar (52nd floor) and the Peak Bar (41st floor) both have generous interiors and killer views of Tokyo. Neither take reservations, which is cool. You can order full New York Grill from the Bar section -- which is also where they have the live music starting at 8PM (that also starts the Y25K cover. I'd highly recommend that NY Bar and also checking out the Peak Bar for a quieter retreat. Their small list of "creation cocktails" are priced at Y20K and quite good. Considering the venue, worth it. The New York Grill I was personally less thrilled with. Pros: views are A++, esp. if you are a couple and sitting along the windows. The Japanese beef is also a solid A. Cons: the rest of the food and the service while fine, does not match the amazing view or the really good Japanese beef, IMHO. Not to be a spoiled type, however, it is an amazing venue and a treat.

Yelp
I had a short-notice business trip to Tokyo and was looking for a memorable location to meet-up for dinner with a friend I've known from college for years. At a week prior to our desired dining date (a Wednesday), only 9:00 PM and later online reservations for two were available. In the remarks section, I requested an earlier seating if available and a day or two later, I was contacted by e-mail and offered an 8:00 PM seating, which worked better for us. My friend and I met at Shinjuku Station and it was a short, enjoyable walk to the Park Hyatt. It was a bit of a trek to find the right elevators to the 41st floor lobby and then to the 52d floor, but we actually arrived about an hour prior to our reservation time. The staff was great and promptly found us a table by a window so we were actually seated after 7:00 PM. The weather forecast called for rain and it was overcast so maybe they had reservation no-shows, but the views we experienced were still remarkable. We decided to order off the ala carte menu and we both had the prime rib with one side dish each (spinach and mashed potatoes.) The service was outstanding and the quality of the food was exceptional. I would not hesitate to dine there again or recommend it to friends. The live jazz from the bar on the other side provided great ambience. At dinner, it is dimly lit so it could be challenging for some to read the menus after sunset. We received one check, but the waiter was kind enough to split it in two so we could each use our individual credit cards to pay half. Before we departed, we took a walk through the bar area and took some photos of the spectacular views on each side of the building. It was raining when we exited the building and the hotel valet was kind enough to get a cab for us for the short ride to the West Entrance of Shinjuku Station. Looking forward to my next visit. I'd like to have lunch there and enjoy the daytime views.

Yelp
Hands down, you come to the New York Grill for the view and the ambiance. You stay for the food, but the food isn't the reason you come here. This is a steakhouse in the cleanest sense of the word, but I wouldn't call this or consider this one of the iconic steakhouses in the world. By that, I mean if you didn't have the steak I don't think you would be missing out. As I mentioned, the view is fantastic and service was pretty on point. I will mention that we came for lunch therefore the stress of turnover tables probably wasn't that high. The use of an appetizer and dessert bar is an unique concept and smart because the main entree was not very big, to put it lightly. However, the desserts were on point. We were guests at the hotel and both our experiences with the New York Bar and Grill wasn't pretty good. Initially during our stay, the General Manager, once knowing that we were guests of the hotel gave us a tour of the space and the views that it offers. That was unexpected. However, YMMV if you're not a guest of the hotel. Overall, I would say the grill part isn't important as the bar part since what you're here for is the view and instead of paying $80+ for a view, you'll wind up paying $40+ for the view. Or you can just use the lounge on the 41st floor which does offer a similar view as well.

Yelp
This is a really yummy restaurant with impeccable service with incredible views. It's also really expensive with a dated decor and somewhat uninspired menu. Wow, can't believe how critical I can be. lol. The lobster was great, the wine selection was fantastic, and the desert was expertly prepared. Would I repeat...hmm... maybe if I were on an expense account. But you can't go wrong at the Park Hyatt.

Yelp
New York Grill is probably the only place in Tokyo where you won't get lost in translation;-). We had an aniversary dinner here recently (book well in advance if you want window seats (I booked 2,5 months for a Friday night spot). Food, drinks, service and ambiance (a jazz band was playing at the bar) are all A-grade here, as is the price (expect anywhere between 40,000 and 70,000 YEN for a 2 person meal incl. the works). Although I am not a fan of steep pricing, in this specific case, I do support it. Given Park Hyatt's reputation and its appearance in Lost in Translation movie, the place would be overrun by tourists if it was in any form affordable. When in Rome, eat as the Romans do: so best thing I would recommend is to order steep on the steak-side (which are very sizeable and delicious). Wine list is very extensive here as well, featuring a myriad of new world wines. We had a Pinot Noir from Oregon which was nice, but not astonishing. All in all, a fantastic location for a very special evening. P.S. Did I mention they have the best view of Tokyo I've ever seen.

Yelp
The magnificent view is definitely the most memorable part of dining at this restaurant. We had a table in front of the window overlooking the entire city. We ate here on our first night in Tokyo and really enjoyed our meal here. The sirloin steak and the salmon were top notch. Waiters were polite and attentive. Music set the mood perfectly. Make a reservation in advance especially if you want a table by the window. Great choice for an overall great dining experience. We want their for lunch and we enjoyed the food and music. Friendly and very attentive staff and good food. Good for the whole family

Yelp
Had AAA wakyu beef. It was melt in your mouth delicious...like really well made fois gras. Because we weren't staying at the Park Hyatt, it was actually very hard to find the elevator that takes you to the restaurant. The building is only part hotel, and shared with other businesses. We had the 5 course meal. Everything was good, but sometimes I felt they tried too hard to infuse the food with a Japanese flavor. For example, the lobster with ponzu consomme, while good, kept making me think the flavors did not play perfectly well together. I also did not enjoy the dessert - the Japanese mango sphere. It looked weird and tasted cheap. Dessert is the last course - it should be able to wow you. Also, they have live music which is a big mistake. Guests are chatting, then music starts at 7 (or 8), drowning out the talking but then people start talking louder. It isn't that patrons are talking loudly: the open concept just amplifies the sound. Throw live music into it and it ruins the ambience! Once last thing; while most places in Japan don't charge a service fee, this place does. I would visit this place again. The view was awesome (we sat right at the window and enjoyed the breathtaking view), the service was very attentive, and for the most part, the food was wonderful.

Yelp
This is a great place for a special occasion. Views are spectacular, service is amazing, and the food is absolutely delicious. We started with an appetizer of Hokkaido burrata with some sort of citrus/radish salad. It was so delicious! For my main, I had the tuna steak with tamarind sauce and edamame pesto. The edamame pest fell a bit flat, but the tuna was perfectly cooked and the tamarind was great. My husband had a Japanese steak that was cooked to perfection. Sides are ordered separate and complimented the dishes nicely. We had a banana split for dessert as well as a special anniversary dessert. This restaurant did an amazing job catering to my gluten free diet. They even had gluten free dinner rolls! Book a later reservation 8 and on) if you want to hear some excellent live jazz.

Yelp
As a cinema lover I'm naturally drawn to film locations when I travel. One of the most iconic film set in Tokyo in the last decade is Lost In Translation with Bill Murray and so I needed to check out this bar I've seen and heard so much about in person. Located at The Park Hyatt hotel I was a little concerned our wardrobe choices (t-shirts, jeans, sneakers) would not be good enough to get in however we found the dress code pretty easy going. As long as you don't wear thongs and dress in something nice you will be fine. Our group of three was sat at the long communal table near the bar with a perfect view of the live jazz band (complete with saxophone). Ordering off their extensive cocktail menu it looks like they have gone for the classics rather than anything too unusual. The espresso martini had chocolate bitters and was delicious. We also loved the New Yorker which was a Makers Mark base. The classic dry martini was made with gin and tasted good too. The bar is a great experience, you can look at a amazing view over Tokyo and at night it's got a lot of atmosphere and people watching opportunities. It's quite expensive for Japan and mainly has westerners. For film lovers or a fancy date it's a must.

Yelp
Cuisine, outstanding. The views of the expanse of greater Tokyo form the 52nd floor, are simply stunning and beyond compare. PRO TIP: They take reservations 3 months in advance and not a day sooner, so if you want a coveted window table, email them exactly 3 months in advance and you will be very happy you did.

Yelp
As a fan of the movie "Lost in Translation" and a not-so-original foreigner, I have always wanted to dine at the New York Grill at night and have a cocktail at the bar. I don't know why, just something about it. But, for five years, I have been hesitant. Would it live up to my expectations? Am I setting the bar too high? The short answer is, yes, it did live up to my expectations. My BF took me there as a surprise for my birthday (though, to be honest, I kind of figured it out). When the elevator doors open, the view is breathtaking. All the tiny lights below, it's like illumination season in Japan. We were seated at a booth, unfortunately not next to the window, but the windows are from the floor to the ceiling, so having a look outside still wasn't a problem. We ordered the Manhattan Course, which came with crab tartar, butterfish and clams, and chocolate marquise. The crab tartar (shaped kind of like a cake) had a great flavor, especially with the cream on the bottom layer. The only problem I had is it fell apart quite easily, making it a little difficult to eat. The butterfish and clams was also excellent, and went well with the squid ink on the plate to mix it with. Lastly, the chocolate marquise was a chocolate sensation in my mouth. It was intensely rich, with a coating of berry sauce to make it even better. The raspberry sherbet ice cream was a great finisher. Of course, I also got a birthday ice cream for my birthday! With dinner we had a Rosé (2009! Maybe one of the oldest wines I have ever had. I never said I was a wine snob). After dinner, we asked to be moved to the bar so we could better see the jazz band. We were told there is a 2,200 Yen charge to move per person. I'm not trying to be stingy, but we had already spent quite a bit of money and were going to spend more at the bar, I feel like for people already dining at the restaurant the charge should be waived. But, my BF, being the great person he is, paid it. While he had a whiskey, I had a Radio City cocktail, which had Grey Goose, Earlgrey Infused, Pink Pepper Syrup, and soda. It was suck-it-down-but-not-too-fast-because-this-was-expensive good. Like, I want to learn how to make it at home. We also had duck fat french fries, which I recommend getting too. All in all, it was a great birthday night out, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a fancy place to take friends, or a nice date. Going here made me want to go to bars like this all the time (I've been spoiled). I hope to someday go here again, but would it be the same?

Yelp
This is the famed restaurant in Lost in Translation where ScarJo and Bill Murray meet and have a drink where the red headed lounge singer plays. The view from this venue is breathtaking so my friends and I decided we must go. We had a lot of fun and actually came 2x. We booked a dinner reservation and the food here was fantastic. The service here was impeccable and the wait staff were all gorgeous. It was like being in LA in that regard. The staff was also bilingual which helped and this is a place where you must tip as they take after US customs. You do have to pay to hear the jazz band. The band also takes requests. People do smoke inside because it's Japan so be warned. We also dressed up to come here. The second night we came for drinks and to hang out. I would definitely come back here. It's a beautiful, spacious restaurant with really good food.

Yelp
I was very disappointed with our visit. The view was amazing but the meal wasn't that great. I had a Cosmo which was probably the worst Cosmo that I have ever had. Wine by the glass is about a four ounce pour and you will have the pleasure of spending $20 for the least expensive glass. I drink Chardonnay on a continuous basis from a wide selection of US vineyards but the Riley Chardonnay was so unpleasant that I left it on the table. We waited almost an hour to get a single course. The food was relatively good but overall the price could not be justified with the unpleasant drinks and long wait.

I don't know how I ended up here, I guess I got "Lost in translation" but it was just incredible the atmosphere and the food

Yelp
5* food 3* service You're paying for really good food in an iconic place. But with the price you should have excellent service and they don't have it. I have been here probably five times and now the bar and also the restaurant. Every time the service is super slow. The drinks are good, the views are some of the best in the world, the hotel is nice, and if you eat they have some of the best beef Japan can offer. But 15 minutes to get a first drink. Half an hour to get someone to produce a final check. Its a repeat problem. But you do it anyways for the food and views.

Yelp
Our first night in Tokyo, and we decided to stay in the hotel, and have a meal at the New York Grill. The restaurant was busy, and had a nice lively feel. We were quickly seated in the main dining room, however we had walked past the kitchen seating area, and requested to be moved there (we love watching the chefs in action). Food was decent (nothing spectacular). We had the seared tuna, along with the burrata... then the fillet and the prime rib, along with mashed potatoes and mushrooms. My issue with the meal was the service. Friendly, however extremely rushed... We ordered our food and drinks... a few mins later they brought out the bread, and a few seconds later, the apps were on the table (didn't even get a bite of the bread, and still no drinks)... before we finished the apps, the main course was ready. The service however didn't seem to be the norm, as the couple sitting next to us was there before us, and also there when we left. For a fairly expensive meal at a nice restaurant on our first night in the City, i would have liked to relax and enjoy it.

Yelp
I've visited New York Grill on several occasions and often recommend it to VIP's visiting from the US. Each time has been rather nice; pimarily for the atmosphere. The cuisine is acceptable, but Chef Heerd and his team are certainly no longer validating their Michelin star. At some point though, they must have been and I regret that I missed that period. On two of the most recent occasions I was particularly excited about the steak, but dissappointed in both cases. In the first experience, the steak was to be prepared medium, but was instead cooked well and somehow over-zealously fragrant of fish. On my second visit, I decided to give the steak another try. Even the most respectable chef can have an off day. However, this time the steak was in fact medium but also abundant with oil and what appeared to be overly seared, most likely due to too high temperature in a attempt to rush the food out. The result was a small steak blackened on the outside, pink, chewy and dry on the inside. But perhaps steak is their weak point. I decided to be optimistic and make yet a another dinner reservation. This time to celebrate the birthday of an American diplomat friend of mine to happened to be visiting Tokyo on work. I set the reservation early and then began making preparations. I called the restaurant back the following day to see if it's possible to bring in a quite small, but specially prepared cake for this unique occasion. As a true show of selfishness and failure to serve the customer, this simple and harmless request was declined by one of the hostesses over the phone. Obviuosly, I immediately cancelled my reservation. The visiting guest is more valuable than this restaurant as a whole and I needed to immediately call for emergency planning. On a personal level, this was the last straw for me. A Michelin star is not only representative of quality food, but of quality service, which means nothing if both are not equally met. I will never again allow myself to grace those grounds. I have removed it from the list of recommended elegant dining locations at the US Embassy and will no longer recommend it to any of the visiting VIP's that I cater to in the future. This restaurant has become a selfish and disgraceful establishment. If your searching for a restaurant concerned more about their own interests and how much you'll be spending, than about customer experience, courtesy, and respect, then this is the place for you and I truly wish you a beautiful dining experience. I'm sure you'll find the view enchanting. For the rest of us who cherish the quality of service recieved, I recommend an establishment with a higher sense of consideration for their customers, such as Hooters in Shinjuku. Furthermore, here are a list of high quality luxury dining locations in Tokyo that allow you to bring a cake if your also looking to celebrate a birthday. Kozue Il Ristorante - Luca Fantin Narisawa Aronia de Takazawa Arva by Aman Tokyo Arakawa Yukimura Joël Robuchon Quintessence And for restaurants that do not... New York Grill Subway

Yelp
Is Kobe beef all THAT?!! Yes!! Is the restaurant all THAT?!! I think YES! From the view, to the music to the FOOD. OMG - the best steak I've ever had. I didn't know how to order, so I asked for help from the waiter in just asking, "best kobe beef?". I think he probably gets asked that a lot... I am in denial of how much it cost (just kidding - cuz who kno when I'll be able to have that again, if ever?). I'm getting hungry thinking about it. We were a party of three generally, for us dinner likes these tend to take the whole night, so we were in no hurry to go anywhere. The ambiance was relaxing, I was excited to eat Kobe beef and I think the two cocktails and now wine was making me quite enthused about everything. But looking back, it really was a great night! Cocktails too! The view, I'm sure everyone has mentioned is breathtaking. I ended up ordering a Cesar salad (hey, I was also ordering a "best kobe beef", so I thought I should have some greens). It was great. It had bacon. Very yummy. Since this was the only time I've had real kobe beef in Japan, I would definitely agree with my simple statement to the waiter. "Best Kobe beef". The mashed potatoes were nice - but honestly, I think I was pretty buzzed at that point. I definitely hit the beef first...LOL. I also stole some fries off of my friend's plate which I remember to be tasty as well. Hmm...was it too much Santori time?

Yelp
Not impressive . Hate to say it because I did came in with quite the expectations . Basically Westernized Resturant with high prices ( compared to a lot of the other great restaurants in the area ) , it was lacking in many aspects , Food 6-7 - the rib eye was tasty and juicy , not very appealing to the eyes , but nice marble piece of meat , salmon was ok nothing mind blowing and had a bunch of bones in it , appetizers were actually 50-50 the tuna toro tartar was great really tasty and not gummy at all, the Seared scallop was nothing special very basic dish for this type of Resturant . The view and Resturant it Self are amazing great high ceiling and all around great vibe , too bad the food isn't that mind blowing , service isn't fantastic either had to wait a while for a beer and refill on my water , total for 2 including 2 alcoholic drinks , 2 apps , 2 main and 2 teas and 1 desert came to 34000 yen which is about 290$ give or take , funny note is , they add 15% service fee ( basically tip ) which is terrible because the service wasn't anything near good , however outside restaurants like hachibe sushi , itamae , and more had far better service with out any service fee involved , very very odd point , does the service fee actually ruins more then it helps ?

Yelp
Probably the best Sunday Brunch (food, drinks and view) you can get in Tokyo. I have also been here for dinner time or for just sitting at the bar at night, but for me the best time coming here is at lunch time on weekends. The location is well known from the movie "Lost in Translation" and offers a perfect mix of a la carte menu as well as buffet. Actually every lunch offer goes along with the combined appetizer and dessert buffet, which gives you additionally the choice of several main dishes a la carte. Additionally on Sunday's there is one glass of champagne included in the offer. Very nice for a perfect start into the day in Tokyo. The New York Grill Restaurant & Bar is not the cheapest deal you can get, but clearly one of the culinary highlights in town...

Yelp
We ate here on our first Toyko night because we were jetlagged, exhausted and didn't have the energy to leave the hotel for dinner. Also, we had watched the Bill Murray movie Lost in translation and were interested in seeing the bar. The view was spectacular, the service was attentive, the food just OK, the prices stratospheric. I would suggest it is a better spot for a cocktail than for dinner.

Yelp
For adults to celebrate a special night, nice wine, good food with jazzy music. The price would hurt your wallet but it's okay...

Yelp
Great food and wine! On the expensive side but worth every penny and worth the view. Great for a date or intimate meal with family or friends. Staff were very accommodating. Make sure you book in advance! Count table is fine if you don't get an actual table and bar area has a great atmosphere.

Yelp
We decided to dine here for dinner and take in the view. The drink menu was limited to my taste. No Crown Royal but a 20yr Canadian Club? I am still trying to figure that one. The dinner menu was exciting. I had the scallops and there were delicious. There were seared to perfection and cooked. For some reason in the states my scallops are always undercooked except at my house. The asparagus were perfect. However, the mashed potatoes were good but not spectacular. I would dine here and again. The live band starts at 8pm

Yelp
Having a drink at the New York Grill was a highlight of our trip to Tokyo!! I love the movie 'Lost in Translation' and imagined it being filmed in this room with the wonderful view of Tokyo that changes through daylight, evening and night. Service was wonderful too. We loved it!

Yelp
First of all, the Park Hyatt Tokyo interior is so beautiful compared to the concrete you see outside. On your way to the elevators to get to the 52nd floor you go past some of the other restaurants located inside the hotel. When you step off onto the 52nd floor you see views of Tokyo. Pretty incredible. We were taken to our seats which were alongside the windows fronting Yoyogi Park. Breathtaking. Sunday brunch comes with one glass of champagne, and if they offer you another glass don't take it unless you want to pay 2000 yen for that drink. We didn't know and were a bit taken aback by the charge. Should have asked but it didn't take away from the delicious food or the impeccable service. As we were finishing up the appeteizer buffet and main course, live music was playing in the bar area. Our waiter ushered us there to enjoy the desserts buffet and music. At our table, a bowl of ice cream with a Happy Birthday message with lighted candles awaited me to blow them out. Our waiter Yuki offered to take pictures. It was just perfect. Million dollar views, great food, and awesome service. Come eat here and feel special.

Yelp
The ambience of this restaurant is simply amazing!!! You walk in and the first thing you see is the sweeping views of Tokyo from the 52nd floor of the Park Hyatt. The singer sets a fun yet relaxed mood in the restaurant. We were worried that we'd have to cancel our reservation as we were stuck in traffic on our way back from Mt Fuji. We contacted the restaurant and they moved our reservation from 7 to 8:30. Once at the table we were greeted by our server Park, who handed out the menus and waited for us to order. He was very attentive and the service was flawless. We ordered the New York Grill appetiser platter which had yellowfin fish, beef tongue and some sort of cheese on it as well as the asparagus and foie gras mousse. Everything was wonderful, the appetisers were well balanced in flavour and texture and were beautifully presented. For the main course I ordered the Kobe beef steak, which was divine!!! Park recommended the mustard sauce which went exceptionally well with the beef. Finally for dessert I ordered the New York cheesecake which was amazing!!! The bitter toffee sauce balanced the sweetness of the cheesecake perfectly. The ambience and food of the restaurant were exceptional and I wouldn't hesitate to return to New York Grill!!!

Yelp
The New York Grill is located on the 52nd floor of the Park Hyatt Hotel. The food is beautifully presented and truly wonderful. During this trip I had some wonderful Foie Gras and Kobe Beef that melted in my mouth. The view is outstanding and the service impeccable. Be prepared to spend a few bucks but the experience is well worth it.

Yelp
Damn. One of the best meals I've ever had. Japanese beer, killer bread, scallops with white wine, lamb and asparagus with merlot, perfect chocolate with coffee to finish. On the 52nd floor with occasional lightning flashes and a stunning view of Tokyo at night. And someone else paid the bill.

Yelp
On our last night on a fantastic trip to Japan we took at shot at eating at the iconic park Hyatt New York steak house. During this trip we ate at many Michelin star Resturants so we were used to high prices and high quality. We expected high prices and we expected a fantastic cut of Kobe beef. Sadly the fantastic cut of Kobe beef was no where to be seen. We got a steak cut so slim we could have been at any Denny's. We ate in silence and walking out did not see anyone with a cut so slim. So I thought maybe they got " lost in translation " and instead of splitting my salad they split my steak. Late we examined the bill and we sure enough paid over $350 for two Denny slim steaks! Great view but bad steak. Better to go to a real Japanese steak place and then come there for a drink in the middle age crisis bar where you can choke on cigarette smoke with your after dinner drink.

Yelp
Flawless dinner, service was fantastic, friendly and smiling, efficient and not overbearing. Food done simply and as it should be, perfect execution and very well paced. Cannot recommend highly enough. Michelin stars may be all the rage, but real food like this is not easily found.

Yelp
Legendary views, but you probably knew that already. For my main, I ordered the Hokkaido filet, and I knew there was trouble as soon as my knife touched it--overcooked. A serious crime for meat of this quality and price. My lady's lamb was very tasty and expertly done, and her sister's steak was correctly cooked to medium rare. I never do it, but I had to send my steak back. It came back properly cooked, but still oddly firm for wagyu. The sides of mashed potatoes and the Caesar salad were fine. The best single dish was the lobster pasta. To their credit, the restaurant comped out desserts. This is a cool destination, but there's many superior steak joints in the city.

Yelp
My husband and I spent the last few days of our honeymoon at the Park Hyatt Tokyo hotel and were craving meat and potatoes for dinner which led us to this place. While the views were indeed spectacular, unfortunately this place did not live up to our expectations in terms of food and service. The wait staff didn't seemed too concerned with expediting our drink orders or entrees in a timely manner. We had to wait awhile for our entrees to come out while also having to constantly ask several times for water refills. The food here was overpriced and mediocre to say the least. My husband had the prime ribeye steak with a bearnaise sauce and side of mashed potatoes while I had the lamb shank. Ribeye and mash were under seasoned while the lamb shank tasted overcooked and dried out. Both dishes appeared as though they had been sitting out for awhile since it had a layer of fat film that usually develops as the food cools and sits. Don't get me wrong, the views here were amazing, but I feel that the subpar food and service did not justify the price tag. If you're solely coming here for the views, this isn't a bad spot to check out--just order a few drinks maybe some apps and then save your stomach for another restaurant.

Yelp
Pro's: -the service was inconsistent but when good it is very good. -the bread was good. -fries good. -view good. Cons: -they overcooked some food. Which is never good. -put ice in a glass of vintage Champaign which is a sin. -it was more expensive then needed If you're looking for consistent service and food look somewhere else. Although certain aspects were alright and would be alright for a business that charges less the fact that they would charge 175 us for a steak, the bar is quiet high. But the staff were charming so this is a case of the service being better than the product.

Yelp
Came here for my partner's birthday and it was wonderful. The night views of Tokyo are spectacular. The live music adds to the atmosphere. The food is great and the staff are attentive and polite. A fantastic place for a special occasion. Highly recommended.

Yelp
What a wonderful night! Awesome service, great drinks, beautiful views! We had the three different Japanese steaks Hokkaido Akaushi, Kagoshima Satsuma' and the Kobe. They were all delicious! Cesar salad is big enough for 3-4 people. Crab cakes are tasty. Prompt service. We weren't rushed at all and were there for 3 hours. Extensive wine list and great drinks. We spent about 3 car payments on dinner, but it was the best dinner I have ever had.

Yelp
The Restaurant certainly met all of the standards of elegance and atmosphere, but the service was truly sub standard, which is a shame after so many years of fine dining service. When we initially made the reservations, we were told that there were no tables available after 6:00 pm. We arrived at 6:00 and left about 9:00 pm. For the entirety of the time we were there, there were at least 8 tables sitting empty, (nearly 1/3 of the dining area). The terrible service started with bar menus being presented to half our party for dinner service in the main dining room. It then took 20 minutes to find a waiter to bring the appropriate menu and nearly 45 minutes to get served our initial courses. The waiter was completely unable to properly convey the menu in English. He did not even seem to know the preparation of the steak, when this is indeed a "Steakhouse". Oddly enough, as soon as the meal plates were cleared the check was presented and the waiter literally stood over us until we signed the credit card receipt, like a coffee shop in a bad neighborhood. Not as though he needed the table, as literally there were 8 tables sitting empty for the entirety of the evening. It was not a particularly good experience and not what you expect from a 5 star Hyatt property.

Yelp
What can really be said, that hasn't already been said? Impeccable service. A world class view. Great food (the bread is to die for). A robust menu offering of cocktails, wines and spirits. This isn't a cheap place, but it does offer a great value, when you consider the myriad of variables. Dinner for 2, will set you back $300, at a minimum. This is one of the rare places in Japan where a service charge is expected and is automatically added to the bill. It's 15%, if I recall correctly. You'll need a reservation. I recommend a 6PM - 7PM time slot, because you'll get the best combination of sunset, sky and overall view of the city, at that time. Order the burrata. It's fantastic. Granted, everything we are was good.
