I took two courses at NYIP (the Complete Course in Professional Photography first and then the Intensive Course in Wedding Photography).
Regarding the Complete Course in Professional Photography - I really enjoyed this course and I got a TON out of it. I loved photography but was always scared of pursuing it professionally because I was afraid of encountering tricky lighting situations and difficult-to-manage subjects on paid gigs, but this course taught me everything I needed to know so I felt more confident showing people my work, creating a website, and starting a photography business. The material on the professional photography course was extremely helpful, especially the topics on composition and harnessing the light. While taking the course, I learned a lot about how my camera works and what equipment and camera settings I need in order to create the effects I want to create in all of my photos. So far, I have gotten great feedback from the new clients after I took this course. The materials and feedback to unit projects from professionals in the field were extremely helpful in improving my photography skills, learning about best-practices, and designing my business plan and strategy. I cannot recommend this course enough to anyone hoping to pursue photography professionally.
Regarding the Intensive Course in Wedding Photography - I thought the course was pretty good. In hindsight, I don't know that I would take this course again, especially since I took the Complete Course in Professional Photography with NYIP first. I thought some of the material was repetitive and I can't say I learned a lot more about wedding photography after doing the intensive course. The unit projects were good in focusing on aspects of wedding photography, but the instructors that evaluated some of my projects were not necessarily wedding photographers, which made me curious as to whether they were entirely qualified to review my work. Otherwise, most of their feedback was helpful. What I did find very helpful about the wedding course were the resources used for the course (in terms of the professionals in the field who provided the reading material). I thought it was helpful reading about best-practices and learning about the equipment and processes of those who actually work in the wedding planning and wedding photography industry. There was a lot to get inspired from. I did encounter issues where some of the links in the materials were outdated or led me to photography websites that no longer exist, but I communicated this to my student advisor and I am hopeful that it will get remedied so that students taking the course in the future have current/live examples of wedding photography work.
Dealing with NYIP in general went pretty smoothly. Their self-study program format is extremely easy to use and is well made. I liked that it worked really well with my busy schedule. Overall, the student advisors were knowledgeable and helpful. I had no major issues in terms of communicating with the school. Sometimes, they would take a bit longer than I would have hoped for to respond to my emails, but I never felt like they did not resolve my issues. I had issues with project grading and one unit project being rejected and I got it all sorted out in a few weeks. I see some people complain about paying and having issues, but I didn't encounter any of that. The whole idea of this course is that you pay and then go through the material and projects by yourself. Once you submit projects, it takes some time, but they always give you a grade and feedback after a week or so. As long as you fulfill all of the course requirements within the period of time they give you to complete everything, you should qualify to get your diploma with no issues. You should be willing to commit to completing the course with little or no hand-holding. Personally, I recommend going with NYIP.
