4JAN.2025 First time here and had a wonderful time. Huge museum tracing New York States cultural and natural history. Super family friendly and so many great exhibits. Full scale Penn station 🚉 exhibit and beautiful tribute to 9/11. Excellent Harlem exhibit. So much to see and educate yourself on. Wonderful Native American exhibit on food, survival, and way of life.

A visit to the NY State Museum instills a sense of awe and respect for history and diversity of NY. Kid-friendly and free, this museum has something for everyone. Highlights include exhibits on indigenous people, migrants arriving at Ellis Island, African Americans and Harlem, and the tragedy of 9/11. The museum can benefit from updates and more interactive features. Don’t forget to ride the classic carousel on the 4th floor and rekindle your inner child.

Free admission and finest geological and paleological exhibits outside of NYC. An especially peaceful gem to visit during weekdays once school starts xo. As a professional writer for Rock & Gem Magazine, I have found the museum and its staff to be kind, helpful resources always

A very informative and fun museum to go to with family or even by yourself. Private parking is $10 and museum itself is free but donations are welcomed. It is split into natural history of new york (first nation tribes, birds, minerals, extinct animals etc) and the industrial history of new york (skyscrapers, new york slums, the immigrant experience, NY subway, and 9/11). There is also an emotionally impactful exhibit on the holocaust and how America did (and did not) respond to the plight of the european Jewish population. All in all a great experience with helpful staff and a simple enough layout that you don’t feel overwhelmed but not so simple that you get bored. PS. Its closed on Mondays

Visiting the State Museum was an amazing experience! The tour is free and very kid-friendly. I recommend setting aside 2 to 3 hours to fully enjoy it, there’s so much to see, read, and learn about.

It’s a must visit place in Albany. No ticket required. Completely free to enter. It’s a huge museum. My 2 years old niece enjoyed a lot. Lot of history to learn.

A great museum showcasing New York history, although some exhibits felt a bit outdated. The place was lively with many enthusiastic children enjoying their visit on a Saturday. Unfortunately, the free parking lot next to the museum was unavailable today due to a special event on the plaza.

Strong in the Force, this museum is—a temple of knowledge, vast and rich in history. The Hall of Adirondack Wilderness, the solemn 9/11 exhibit, and the tales of New York’s indigenous peoples all offer deep lessons to those who seek them. Mighty mastodons stand frozen in time, while a grand carousel provides a moment of balance and joy. Free to visit, the museum is, though donations are welcomed. For any seeker of wisdom, a journey here is well worth the time. A must-visit for those attuned to history and the Force.
