Newcastle Museum

I went there on a Friday with the my photography group. I had never been there before. The museum is huge and much larger than I expected. Of course it is Newcastle oriented in its objects displayed and the people featured. But it is all interesting. Very. Newcastle is a BHP town and there is a short display of steel production. It’s very well done and narrated by a lovely person. Erin. Most of the museum is free to wander around. There is one part of it which cost $10/$8 which has special stuff especially for the young and young at heart. And the staff are always there to help and are absolutely lovely. We were all from Sydney and caught the intercity train and the light rail to get there. Very pleasant journey. (They have USB and normal 3 pin power points on the train) A visit is recommended.

Pleasantly surprised by the visit to this museum. Really liked getting to know Newcastle history, coal mining details and the coal show. The science section is truly amazing and great to engage kids, hours of fun experiments and experience to everyone… definitely going to visit again. Would have been good if there was a cafe with in museum but not to worry only because the Newcastle harbour with lot of good food options is within arm’s reach..

Their exhibit on Australian history is beautifully curated, simultaneously profoundly fascinating and utterly heartbreaking. Felt meaningfully and poignantly connected to my unknown convict ancestors for the first time in my life. Had to sit in the park and stare into the middle distance for 30 minutes after viewing. Came back later that week. Highly recommend.

A lovely little museum showcasing interesting facts and objects from Newcastle's history. It's got 3 main sections displaying Newcastle's past of production, development, and resurgences, as well as a section displaying some science facts through interactive tables. General entry is free, and only 1 section requires a ticket ($10 starting per person, though there does seem to be discounts for concessions and families). It's fantastic place to visit, in a great location in the city and very close to the beach, and whether you're visiting as an adult or as a family, there will always be something fun to see.

Great museum and friendly stuff. I enjoyed the science section as well as the metallurgy and coal section. The metallurgy section had a really cool demonstration of the smelting that was done in Newcastle. It's a fantastic demonstration with lights and smoke machine 🙂. Way better than expected.

We had a wonderful experience at the museum. The lady at the front desk was incredibly kind, welcoming, and helpful, which made our visit even more enjoyable. The exhibitions are often very well done and engaging, especially for children. We went to see the model exhibition, and it was absolutely beautiful — so much detail and creativity. It was truly impressive. The only downside is the parking. Although there is a car park right next to the museum, it can be quite expensive and there isn’t always a space available, which can be a little frustrating. Overall, the museum is a fantastic place to visit, and I would definitely recommend it.

Nice place to explore new knowledge in a small museum, with a pleasant atmosphere and friendly staff.

The main part of the museum with Newcastle history is free to the public. The other side with science is not free. We stopped here for like 30-45 mins and it was a nice stop. Most of Newcastle history is nostalgic of the 20th century. There's a big section about the history of a department store and there's a lot of relics of consumerism. There's a section about military and section about sports. There's a section of an old commuter train in the back. There's some history on indigenous life. There's an old Ford Model T. Australia is a newer country without deep history, so this is rather small, but it's still well-done and professional.

What do you do when presented with a rainy afternoon, a toddler and Savvy Aunty babysitting duties to perform? Escape the weather for a few hours in Newcastle Museum is what. It's no MoMA or Guggenheim but this compact museum gives a great insight into Newcastle's history including a wing dedicated to the BHP steel works that defined the city for so many years. While there's enough moving parts and a cafe on site to keep kidlets amused, the exhibitions themselves are not specifically targeted for a younger audience so it'll most likely go over their innocent heads.

Great museum for tourists and children. Gives some nice history of Newcastle and interactive exhibits that take a good amount of time to see all of. Best part is it's free too.
