What to See and Do in Niagara Falls

"Reopened in 2021 as an interactive museum, the former power plant traces a century of regional electrification and brings workers and machinery to life with projections in the turbine halls; I also took a hard-hat peek at the new experience that includes a glass elevator (opened July 2021) descending about 180 feet into the old Tailrace Tunnel so you can disembark at the bottom and stand on an outdoor platform for a striking new vantage point of the falls, and I returned later to experience Currents: Niagara’s Power Transformed, an immersive indoor light-and-sound show that further animates the site's history." - Heather Greenwood Davis Heather Greenwood Davis For more than 20 years, Heather Greenwood Davis has been sharing stories that connect travelers with the places they visit. Niagara Parks Power Station

Google
We visited the Power Station in the evening during our Niagara Falls trip, and it was a highlight of our trip. We started with the museum portion and used the audio tour. The audio tour is "self-paced," which is great, but the Power Station is huge. If you are a history buff, you could easily spend 2+ hours just in the main hall—definitely leave yourself plenty of time if you plan on hitting every stop, as it's very detailed. After the main hall, we took the elevator down to the Tunnel. The tunnel is about 2,200 feet long (roughly 0.7 km). It's flat and paved, but it is a long walk there and back, so wear comfortable shoes. We timed it perfectly: we walked out during the daytime experience, but on our way back, it had transitioned into the night experience with synchronized lights and music. At the very end of the tunnel, there is an observation platform right at the edge of the river. The platform at the end puts you at the very bottom of the falls, looking up. It’s a much more powerful feeling than looking down from the sidewalk above. They provide free ponchos, which you will definitely need because of the mist from the Horseshoe Falls—an amazing perspective of the falls that most people miss!

Google
The tunnel aspect is amazing as is the gift shop. I would recommend going during the day for the museum so you can do the audio tour. We went for the night admission and it was hard to read the signs in the museum and the audio tour is bit available as it has a light show/movie instead. The lights on the falls were cool, but I would have liked to see the falls more during the day and raken the audio tour. Great place to visit especially if you geek out on the amazing inventions created back then.

We did the guided tour and Juan was JUAN-derful. Lots of cool facts in history in this 100+ year old power station. Tesla coil is definitely the highlight so make sure you check out the performances 10 till every hour! Bathrooms were very nice and were impressed at how well they were maintained. Gift shop has cute selections and a coffee bar. Staff were very nice and very helpful for our visit. Wish we could’ve seen more of the below workings, but understand why we couldn’t. The Tunnel is amazing, and is definitely worth the half mile walk to be so close to the falls. Free ponchos were provided which lead to a desirable experience, even in bad weather.

Google
An absolute "must-visit" for anyone interested in engineering or history. Seeing the massive generators and learning how they harnessed the falls over 100 years ago was fascinating. The interactive exhibits are great for all ages, and the Tesla coil demonstration was a real spark of genius! The restoration of the building is top-notch, keeping the original industrial aesthetic while making it modern and accessible. Don't skip the tunnel at the end—it's an engineering marvel in its own right with a view that is second to none.

Google
The story/show at the beginning was really fun and informative! Interactive and lights up to follow you around, great if you have kids because it will keep their attention and they can have some fun with it, elevator ride down to the tunnel was interesting, you can see everything underground and the guide gave some really cool facts about it during the ride down..the tunnel is a bit of a walk, I enjoy it but for anyone who has issues walking or has small children make sure you have a stroller, for older folks I suggest requesting a wheelchair for ease and comfort if you don't have one yourself, I saw a few around the station as we walked through. The view from the end of the tunnel was beautiful, I'm a local and have seen the falls thousands of times but it's always nice to see it from a different perspective. For newcomers and tourists I highly recommend it. Up close and personal! We didn't have time to stop to read but they had many stations throughout the tunnel and the main area where the show is to read and interact.

Google
Absolutely incredible experience. Walking through the massive industrial doors, you immediately feel the scale and seriousness of this project. The power station operated for nearly 100 years and changed life in Ontario forever. The immersive projections on the original walls and machinery make the human effort behind it very real. The descent by elevator, the tunnel deep under solid rock, and the final exit right beside the roaring waterfall are unforgettable. Powerful, emotional, and truly unique.

Google
We did the immersive experience and it was very cool! Learned lots of history and interesting facts, the elevator was pretty cool. We enjoyed the walk through the tunnel and the view at the lookout was great. Was also a perfect spot to catch the fireworks! Great for the kids - just make sure you’re dressed warm. They provide ponchos before going outside the tunnel.

Google
We bought the multipack for best value. Super interesting, the Tesla coil demonstration was very good which happens once per hour. The tunnel walk was 2100 feet but ends with a breathtaking view of the falls. Would highly recommend. Power station attraction provided audio with information about each exhibit which was cool if your looking to learn a thing or two. Gift shop on site for tourists with little nicknacks related to power station and Nikola Tesla. I bought a winter hat 🤠 👍🏻

Yelp
The Power Station an Night program is truly a spectacle. So much lighting and soundscape work was done to make visiting the power station at night a really novel experience even if you've been there before. Everything was clean and its clear they didn't penny pinch when choosing materials, it was all very sleek and beautiful. The elephant in the room is parking. First, if you buy your tickets online directly from Niagara Parks, you are offered what sounds like an unimpressive deal to get all-day Niagara Parks parking (at any of their sites) included for (if I remember correctly) 33 dollars. This sounds expensive but parking JUST for the power station, regardless of how long you stay, is 36 dollars. So even if you ONLY go to the power station, the parking add-on (which MUST be bought with some other admission) is a deal. We ended up going to 2 Niagara parks and the first one cost 5 dollars an hour to park at and then we paid the full 36 at the power station because I didn't realize that 33 dollars really was the better deal and once you pass it up online you can't opt to buy it on-site at their properties. In summary, the power station itself was well worth the admission price. The parking is kind of a scam but you can minimize the sting by either buying parking WITH your tickets online before you go or, if you are going to pay 36 dollars, use that expensive spot for hours and explore the entire falls area before and after the power station visit.

Yelp
This place was spectacular. I wasn't sure what to expect, but felt like it was a highlight of our time at Niagara Falls. We went for the evening light show performance. Our kids, 5-year-old twins, absolutely loved it. They enjoyed seeing all the imagery and ran around on the museum floor. The major highlight was the tunnel experience. It's a LONG walk, especially if you have slow walking kids in tow. But you can experience the ambiance and lights underground as you walk out to the edge of Niagara Falls. They provide ponchos, which the kids totally loved and thought they looked like blue ghosts. Be sure to check out the great gift shop here. What a wonderful time! It's a beautiful spot right in the heart of Niagara Falls.

Yelp
I took my grandchildren in the evening. We arrived promptly at Six. The Power Station is awesome! The kids got a chance to see how electricity is generated, and then we went through the tunnel and out to the Falls. This was the one place in all of Niagara Falls, where we didn't feel crowded or pushed around. No one urged to move us along. It really truly was a pleasure to visit. I would be remiss to not mention Bob and Juan. They were both wonderful with my grandchildren. They were kind, informative, and super helpful. They were a big part of why we had such a wonderful visit. 10 out of 10. We would definitely go again.

Yelp
THE BEST NIAGARA ATTRACTION!!!! 1. Less People - I'm sure people don't realize how cool this option is because there were so few people, it was quiet, there were no lines, and there was so much space! 2. Best Falls View - after walking through the spillway tunnel, you get a spectacular view of the falls with the most amazing photo ops. It is gorgeous, and we didn't feel pressured to leave quickly. (These tunnels are so much more comfortable than the Journey behind the falls. They were large and not hot or stuffy) 3. Informational and Interesting - the guided audio tour came with the entrance, and there was so much to learn. The Tesla exhibit was so much fun and unexpected. Don't skip the power station if you have the adventure pass!

Yelp
The Power Station is a must even if for "The Tunnel" experience alone. It was part of the Adventure Pass, but parking in their LOT A was not included in the parking pass. I wasn't about to pay $36 to pay there so I parked at the Floral Showhouse and walked to the Power Station. I took a brief stroll around the museum and then waited in short line for the elevator ride. The walk through the tunnel was quick and easy. I could hear the roar of the falls as I got closer to the opening. It was mid March and the spray from the water was cold! Even with the poncho, I lasted about 5 minutes before I was almost completely drenched. It was an awesome moment to stand near the falls. It was a lot to take in. Luckily being off season, the observation deck was not very crowded. I made my way back to the gift shop and ordered some hot coffee.

Yelp
Amazing new attraction in the restored power tunnels. My wife and I came at night as this was our last attraction and we loved it. The tunnels are so fun to walk through and the mist and view at the end are amazing. The exhibits throughout the tunnels that explain the history and facts about the power station are great too. Plus we got our best picture ever with the mist and falls in the background that is now my Facebook and Yelp profile picture!

Yelp
We spent a surprisingly long time visiting the Power Station with our 14-year old daughter. The tunnel and the Tesla coil were highlights. We've seen another Tesla coil in Chicago, but it didn't play music. Highly recommend stopping by the Power Station if you're in Niagara Falls.

Yelp
My friend and I took a short trip to Niagara Falls, Canada and we purchased an adventure pass from niagaraparks.com. We paid 89.00 each for the pass which included Niagara Power Station plus Tunnel. You get on an elevator that takes you several stories underground and you view the old water power plant. Once you get off the elevator, you walk through this long tunnel to an observation deck of Niagara Falls. It was a lot of walking but they had benches installed along the way. Bottom line if you have any mobility problems, do go. They say it's a 10 minute walk but it took me 15 minutes. You can see the same thing with Journey Behind the Falls. The view of the Falls is better. The adventure pass is an excellent way to see Niagara Falls. It even includes bus transportation to all the attractions.
google avatar

Jake K.

Yelp
Pretty cool experience. The museum part is kind of boring but the underground tunnel is really cool. You get a nice close view of the falls at the end of the tunnel.
google avatar

Tanya C.

Yelp
We had the adventure pass and this was one of the stops where they didn't care what time you were booked. The museum part was nice but I am not really a museum person so I didn't spend time reading everything. The funnest part was the elevator that brought us down a very long tunnel to an observation deck. It was quite a walk and very chilly so be prepared for that. We got ponchos before the observation deck.

Kenzi S.

Yelp
Super unique experience to go underground and get closer to the falls. They have ponchos towards the end of the tunnel that I definitely recommend grabbing. It was a little difficult to take pictures of the falls due to all of the mist coming off the falls. Was pricey for the attraction but definitely was a cool experience! We did the attraction at night time which was cool however I wouldn't recommend doing it around the time of the fireworks as it gets very packed there.
google avatar

Chris T.

Yelp
This is an amazing experience at night. The tunnel is colourfully lit and very atmospheric, with beautiful generative music. Probably the highlight of our trip. The nighttime light show inside the power station is a lot of fun too.

Yelp
Took the self tour and went thru the tunnel. About 2.5 hours total but stopped to read most of the displays. If you're into engineering, history and science there's something for you here. I thought the info provided was just the right amount of detail and for me it was engaging. Others will get an elevator ride and a nice view of the falls.

William K.

Yelp
A beautifully kept attraction in Niagara Falls. The price is obviously a bit on the high side for admission, but we all know that nothing is cheap in Niagara Falls, right? The building has been repurposed beautifully and functions as a great museum outlining the history and significance of the power station to the Niagara Region. There is also a tunnel half a mile long you can walk as well, and once you emerge from it, you get a beautiful view of the Horseshoe Falls. It is quite cold and damp though, so I do recommend bringing a coat to keep yourself warm when down in the tunnel! There are also plenty of exhibits you can see along the way too through an audio tour. The money is worth spending at this attraction and I'd certainly come back here again.

Sabrina Z.

Yelp
We had an amazing time learning about the power station. We also went to the tunnel. Beautiful scenery. Worth the trip
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
This place is worth a trip for their tunnel viewing area. You take an elevator down to a tunnel that used to discharge water and is now an observation deck. It's about a half mile walk each way once you get out of the elevator. They have ponchos for free if you think you want one. The museum itself is good for adults. Maybe a little boring for elementary aged kids. (The free power plant on the American side is the best for kids) The admission is currently 29 cad plus parking. We bought the all day parking pass online for 31 cad. So this is a pricier attraction.

Mary M.

Yelp
A wonderful exhibit and great view of the Horseshoe Falls from their observation deck. This is a piece of Niagara history don't miss it!

Brooke M.

Yelp
Very well done! We had a great time. I would definitely visit again, and would highly recommend. This was a really great way to see the falls from a different viewpoint ad well.

Alfred F.

Yelp
180' underground and a 2200' tunnel. This place was very impressive. Absolutely would go again.

Michael T.

Yelp
Surprisingly interesting, but perhaps not for everyone. The experience of viewing the falls from below is inspiring and incredibly refreshing ... perhaps the effect of all those negative ions created from the falling water. It really only takes a minute or two to take in the view, but I found myself not wanting to leave and hung around for several minutes. If they had a seating area, I would have stayed for a while. Very, very pleasant. I found being in the station and the shop oddly more enjoyable than one would expect. It is such a vast and pleasantly clean space, so smartly decorated, that i felt very relaxed and comfortable. It had a very welcoming vibe. With all that said, I need to point out that there is a very long walk through the tunnel to the platform and it is quite chill down there. People who have difficulty walking long distances may will find it challenging. But there are benches along the way to rest a bit. They are also several points along the way to read about the dam, it's construction, and about hydroelectric power as well. In you tend to feel claustrophobic in tunnels, you don't have to worry about this tunnel, it is enormous! So what are the key elements of the attraction? A unique view of the falls and a very refreshing vibe.

Ian W.

Yelp
The power station is a newly renovated and opened museum right next to the falls on the Canadian side. A run of the river station, this station produced green energy for just over a century. The museum tells both the history of the falls and of hydroelectric power. The enormous generating hall is a monument to Victorian engineering, yet it is but the top of the structure here. A pit dug over 500 feet into the ground houses the enormous turbines that formed the heart of this power giant. A glass elevator takes you down past the 3 foot wide steel tubes carrying water down from the pond above, through the turbines and out through a 2,200ft tunnel to exit just below the falls. Now equipped with a footpath and viewing platform, this unexpected highlight gives you a unique and up close view of Horseshoe Falls. Raincoat are provided. At night a light show tells the history of the river, electricity and human habitation of this area. Interactive and educational, this is another unexpected highlight of this place. Incredibly restored with attention to detail, passion and care, this is an outstanding museum. Take the tour, see the light show, gaze at the architecture, learn some history and a little bit of science. For all that this is a 5 star experience.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place by accident. Do not visit the falls without making this your first stop. Our tour guide did her research. She interviewed several former plant employees, and their insights into their everyday work's dangers were priceless. The sheer scale of the plant is staggering. We descended 184 feet to the bottom of the turbine shafts and traversed the two thousand-foot tunnel that opened up at the foot of Horseshoe Falls.

Jan M.

Yelp
The Tunnel (where the power plant outflow used to exit) is my top pick of Must-Do (+ boat ride) ! So engaging - plan to stay & bask, don't rush off. You rarely get spray, unless the winds are right. We stayed & sipped our water & shared a snack. Heaven on earth

Babak S.

Yelp
Really interesting museum that is well set up. I dropped them 1 star because the guided tour isn't worth it. The tour guide spent time telling anecdotal stories and ran over, which resulted in him having to speed up and gloss over the last portion of the tour. I recommend visiting the station but I would just take the self-guided tour. We went so far over that we never got the chance to take the elevator down to the tunnels and to see the turbine shafts.

Snydie P.

Yelp
Don't miss this! Add the Tunnel tour. So cool. Gorgeous view UNDER Horseshoe Falls. Book direct with Niagaraparks.com. Tons of extra tours and 2-day unlimited pass on local bus. Only way to go. Do not book with Viator (we did) because you pay US$ and miss out on the extras.
