Niehku Mountain Villa Review | Hotels Above Par

"A boutique luxury lodge set on the site of an early 20th-century roundhouse on the Sweden–Norway border more than 120 miles north of the Arctic Circle, this intimate 14-room property blends historic structure and contemporary design—think semi-circular roundhouse walls, natural materials, beiges and soft grays, and a former greasing pit transformed into a glass-ceilinged wine cellar visible from the restaurant. The rooms feel like understated luxury: spacious layouts, soft robes, large showers with strong water pressure, and exceptionally comfortable Hästens mattresses (noted by the reviewer as the best sleep in years); suites add a separate sitting room with an impossibly comfortable couch. Dining is a highlight, with elaborate, multi-course dinners showcasing Kalix löjrom, moose, berries and mushrooms from the Torne Valley, reindeer and grouse from the mountains, and fish and shellfish from the Lofoten Islands, plus a lavish breakfast buffet and thoughtfully packed lunches (ham and focaccia, warming chicken soup, homemade energy bars) for days out. Amenities include a cozy bar for pre-dinner cocktails, a well-stocked and spectacular wine cellar with generous pours, a gym, a restorative sauna, an excellent massage therapist, and curated summer hiking retreats led by knowledgeable guides (the reviewer specifically praised a guide named Andreas for his expertise and pacing). The small size fosters highly personal service—staff are attentive and accommodating, the vibe is homey yet sophisticated, and the location provides direct access to hiking in summer and skiing and northern lights viewing in winter. Practical details: five-star rating, starting rates around SEK 6,795 (~$503) per night, and the closest airport is Kiruna Airport about two hours away by car."

My wife and I just spent 4 days and 3 nights at Niehku, taking up their long weekend hiking package. This has easily been one of the best holiday destinations I've experienced. Everything was amazing and excellent. The hotel, converted from an old locomotive interchange, is well preserved and beautiful. The rooms were very stylish and at the same time cosy and comfortable. The best part of the stay however was the hospitality of the staff. We felt warmly welcomed by each member of the team from the first day right till the end. They were also attentive right down to the last detail (thank you so much for the farewell gift!), accommodating, and friendly. On each of our three hikes, we were accompanied by an excellent guide (Corrine - sorry if the spelling is wrong). She understood our level of experience, brought us on suitable routes and was knowledgeable and very hospitable. We were also provided with lunch and care packs by Niehku for each hike along with the equipment needed (bagpacks and hiking sticks). During each breakfast and dinner service, we were pampered with excellent food equal in standard to some of the finest restaurants we've been to, along with superb service. Overall, we had an amazing time, were recharged, and would love to come back again. Thank you so much for the hospitality, Niehku team.

Niehku Mountian Villa is one of the most special places I have traveled to. The exceptional details that went into creating this lodging is only rivaled by the excitement and beauty of its location! The staff are exceptional and the food was outstanding. We were there for the hiking weekend. The whole weekend we were rewarded with amazing hikes with guides who were highly skilled and passionate. Everyone at Niehku goes above and beyond - you can see the passion and dedication throughout your stay. You won’t want to leave. A stay here will be not just be the highlight of your trip to Sweden but of any trip! It will leave lasting memories of a truly special adventure.

Brilliant stay at Niehku. Would return in a heartbeat. Beautiful breakfast pastries from our favourite Annie, excellent food and wine pairings, and great recommendations from the local fishing expert Thomas. They even cooked a couple of lovely trout we caught.

Niehku is a simply wonderful experience. Friendly, warm welcome. Fabulous and elegant local food. Spectacular coffee, biscuits and Swedish kanelbullar (cinnamon buns) to die for. We loved the recommended and stunning hike along the Kärkevagge valley to Lake Rissajaure. Thanks so much for making our short stay so enjoyable and memorable :)

Being able to go to the high and very quiet valleys near the Kebnekaise massif in late April by helicopter is a true blessing.||||8-10 heli lifts +800m a day and then return to the spring sun close to a kilometer down sitting next to the main building outside sipping a cold beer is close to to a religion itself.||||Upon arrival withe the heli welcoming staff takes care of you. Always in an honest and personal way.||||Quick shower, then sauna with a view over the Swedish/Norwegian border landscape. Full of old and modern history. ||||And then later in the evening enjoy a seven-course dinner, with local ingredients from a championship kitchen.||||What beats that experience?||||Day 3 was cloudy. The helicopters could not take off safely.||||Then the staff immediately arranged for an option to go on a snowmobile excursion north to a well-equipped cabin 20 km straight even further north right into the wilderness.||||Really felt that the management and staff of the hotel are something very special when it comes to having an extra eye for what each guest wants in each moment.||||The building itself is a piece of architectural art, being placed on top of the old engine station. Rooms are beautifully decorated and impeccably clean.||||But again, the unlimited skiing and the welcoming staff really made the stay.||||Will go back next winter. For sure. In early April when the snow is cold on high altitude and the sun is shining on the Niekhu terrace in the afternoon.

You always feel grateful when you are warmly received. So it was this time. Hungry after a long drive from Norway, it tasted extra good with a dish that showed a local touchI have read about the place, but was surprised that it is so easily accessible in RiksgränsenThe unique transformation of a locomotive shed into a hotel can only be an exciting design experience. It warms the soul that there are entrepreneurs who make such efforts.Hope to welcome me back during the winter season
