Niki Nakayama and Carole Iida's Guide to L.A'.s Little Tokyo - AFAR

"One of Los Angeles's major Japanese grocery chains, this Little Tokyo outpost is valued for its location and wide selection of organic produce (much of which is grown at the chain's farm near San Diego) and for carrying hard-to-find Japanese vegetables like matsutake mushrooms and takenoko. The deli offers homey comfort foods such as pork tonkatsu, curry, and hamburger steak, alongside sashimi and sushi." - Mae Hamilton

I love this place. The pre-packaged meals are tasty and good value. The green tea jelly with kinako cream is sooo good - not too sweet with real tea flavour. Onigiri is also affordable at 1.99 each. Not pictured here, but the mitarashi dango is so soft and tasty too. I really wish Nijiya Market existed in Canada!

A little piece of Japan in the heart of Los Angeles! 🇯🇵❤️ I visited Little Tokyo with my daughters, and we absolutely loved the atmosphere — it truly feels like a small corner of Japan right here in LA. We enjoyed some delicious Japanese ice cream — my girls were so happy, the flavors were amazing! 🍨😊 Then we explored the Nijiya Market — a beautiful and well-organized Japanese grocery store. We found so many interesting and authentic products: snacks, drinks, and even Japanese shampoo my daughter picked out herself! Everything felt fresh, clean, and full of cultural charm. Highly recommend this spot to anyone who wants a little taste of Japan — perfect for families and curious food lovers alike! ありがとう Nijiya Market! 🌸🍙🍵

Google
This market in the heart of little Tokyo Japan village in Los Angeles with all the fun stores. They have a microwave for food if you’re gonna buy it here and you can heat it up before you leave so you can eat it. They have the authentic Japanese desserts like mochi and candy and chocolate. Hello kitty candies, some veges, some fruit, tofu, and other grocery items. The prices are not going to be the cheapest like the grocery stores in San Gabriel, but they have all Japanese stuff including stickers. And what I came here for? Pre made bento boxes and other packaged lunch and dinner boxes are great to go. AND after 6-7pm the manager puts a 20% off sticker so look out for deals.

Klaus

Google
They have everything you need and the prices are (mostly) great. I recommend grabbing a lunch here, the sandwiches are amazing.

Google
The store is small, but it's selling Japanese items if you're looking for Japanese stores/groceries/items. They sell fresh/hot to-go foods and offer some discounts depending on the time of the day. You can find sushi, deli, snacks, drinks, beverages, sake, udon fresh/packaged, tea, Japanese foods, etc. Also, they deliver, or you can order through services like Doordash. They have security for your safety concerns.

Google
It was fine. This market is pretty small, so it may disappoint you if you want to explore a wide range of Japanese items. With that saying, this market carries mainly Japanese items and lacks international items. I find the prices here a bit higher than other asian markets, probably due to higher quality products? Besides that, the market is pretty tidy and well maintained.

Truly Japanese! I always stop by when in Little Tokyo to grab an Onigiri. On Saturday’s they’re usually 20% off cause they’ll get tossed the next day. So for $1, you can get a rice ball with salmon or spicy tuna or pickled plum, etc. Real Japanese branded teas and coffees, they even carry Calpis! Good selection of produce, with unique roots and mushrooms. Their freezer section has a ton of take-home items to enjoy like curry and Mochi ice cream. They have fresh mochi here too. With 3 aisles dedicated to candy and sweets, take your time and I suggest picking something new, I haven’t found a candy I don’t like here. They’ve got beauty products that are from Japan and soaps too. Literally anything you may be craving from Japan you can find it here. There is street parking, or structures close by to park at.

John

Google
Good spot for to go meals, snacks, drinks and Japanese groceries. Their spicy tuna rolls and chicken cutlet with curry are my to go items when I visit. Sucks that they don’t carry the OG Ramune soda I’m accustomed to also prepared food here is better than Marukai Market up the street.

Yelp
This is a great market that offers many items you can't find in your regular local grocery store. It's usually pretty crowded and it's a small space so go there with patience but you can find some really unique treats and meals. When I'm in the area on a short break I always go here for there pre made little meals. They have lots of sushi options and other rice and veggies sides. It's a great option for a quick bite in the area if you don't have the time or budget to explore a sit down restaurant.

Yelp
Wish this place was closer to us. We always try to visit when we are in the area and pick up goods like their bento to eat during the week. What we didn't know was how well stocked they are of the Pokémon finger puppets!! We typically get ours from Mitsuwa but turns out this is where the jackpot is! Super crowded and a bit overwhelming but once you know what you're looking for, you'll be fine! It's also fun to see all the different snacks and goodies they have here. IG: @ammysalamii

Yelp
Nijiya Market has the BEST Japanese grocery store prepared grab-and-go items: Bentos, Sushi Rolls, Sashimi, Sandwiches, Side Dishes. After 6pm or so everything from the pre-made food section is all %20 off. Looking to make a Japanese meal at home? Nijiya has you covered. This Little Tokyo location may be small, but it's mighty. Also, their Sushi-Sashimi are above average. I LOVE all Nijiya Market locations ;however, I find it is pricer than their competitors.

Yelp
Cute little market located in the heart of Little Tokyo! They have a variety of snacks and drinks that reminded me of my trip to Japan. I got a few bags of chips, gummies and onigiri. I recommend shopping here for Japanese items you might not find in larger markets.
google avatar

Yelp
We were looking for a few oolong bottled teas and ramune to bring back to our hotel so we stopped in to see the selection. Overall, lots and LOTS of choices for both so we grabbed a few different ones to try. We also got some candy, mochi, and rice cookies. Overall it's a standard Japanese market that's well organized and clean. The staff were nice and very fast with check out. The packaged mochi was a little disappointing because, like most packaged mochi these days, it had a marshmallow center. I missed that on the ingredient translation. Its getting harder and harder to find no marshmallow mochi cakes :(

Yelp
This market has good deals and prices are not bad compared to other place I have been to so this place is good for snacks and drinks that you will like

Yelp
This market in the heart of little Tokyo plays an important role to the community and provides fresh food and groceries to locals and visitors alike. A real good bang for your buck with fair pricing that matches suburban supermarkets. I'd suggest grabbing a boxed lunch and drink and walk over towards MOCA for a quiet shaded lunch. Fast cashiers and observant guards provide a quick and safe experience.

Yelp
Great busy market! Fresh produce, fruit, ready made sandwiches, eggs. Plenty of yummy hello kitty snacks! Will return if I'm back in the area.

Seth

Yelp
This place has tons of good food and snacks at a reasonable price. It makes for a fast and easy snack.

Yelp
It's tiny, but don't let that fool you--it's packed with treasures! From sushi rolls to snacks, it's like stepping into a mini Japan without the flight. The refrigerated section? Stocked full of yummy goods that would be compared to the famous 7-11 in Japan. The sushi is fresh, and the snacks? You'll want to buy the entire aisle (if they haven't already sold out). Pro tip: if you see something you like, grab it fast--this place is a ninja when it comes to selling out. Affordable, packed, and oh-so-delicious. Highly recommend, just grab and go. If you hesitate, it's already in someone else's hands.

Yelp
We always stop in for some lollipops for my son. They have a great selection of cute Japanese candies among other things. We never explore any further than the end caps because we always buy a lollipop for our son, pay and leave without checking out other things. Maybe one day we will explore the market some more.

Yelp
I browse Nijiya Market often when I'm trying to kill some time or on my way to Japanese class. Today, I bought a futomaki roll and a frozen cream cake. The futomaki was 20% off since it was around 7PM - I was really looking forward to it because futomaki is one of my favorites but wow it was super average here. They're extremely rice heavy and because there's so much rice, it doesn't taste like much other than the vinegary rice. Surprisingly despite it being tasteless, I was super thirsty afterwards, which means there's still quite a good amount of sodium or MSG in it. The cream cake (once defrosted) was very good. My total was about $12 - which is not bad. The prices here are usually very overpriced. If you walk a block further, there's a Marukai Market that sells much more.

Yelp
Cool little market located in Little Tokyo. Came in to pickup some food for dinner and they had a reasonable selection of rice balls and other rice dishes/sushi. Prices were reasonable and they looked good. Also had a pretty good selection of chips and other fun items.

Yelp
Thank you, Manager Howard, for your generous donation of goodies for our Little Tokyo SPARKLE clean-up luncheon!! We LOVE NIJIYA for always giving back to our community through other organizations, as well!!

Yelp
When it comes to basic/intro access to Japanese groceries, I think this place can deliver- candies, tofu, small cuts of meat etc. I think it serves as a great way to satisfy a generic expectation of what someone who has a general interest for Japanese food would be excited about. But when it comes to the quality of food, or distinct selection beyond the basic standards, or even just the general service you expect at a Nippon-store, this place falls quite short. I used to shop here a decade ago and I would shop with older Japanese folks for their groceries-- and now it caters more to the looky sees of LT. The cashiers are barely present and don't pack your food right. It's kind of stunning in a bad way. Most of the prepared foods are sadly regrettable but what was I expecting for $2.79 fish sandwich?? I want to badly rate it with one less of a star than it deserves... but I give it props for its existence, but for someone who knows Japanese food & culture, this place is a bad representation of said Japanese expectations.

Yelp
One of my pleasures is going to Asian markets and checking out their prepared food section because I almost always just want to try everything I see. The only thing stopping me is the huge damage it would do to my bank account. :-D This market is no different. It's located in the Japanese Village Plaza, small and a bit cramped, but also filled with many ready-to-eat (or heat) foods that give my cravings a work-out. They have Onigiri, sushi, bento-type meals, and many varieties of sandos as well as drinks, chips...and various other goodies. I grabbed some salmon sushi rolls and a strawberry sandwich and we found a bench in the plaza and just snacked it up. The foods are fun and honestly just as I wanted and expected. It's a perfect place to go if you don't want to eat at any of the restaurants but still want the foodie vibes--grocery store Asian food. Long live Little Tokyo Los Angeles.

Yelp
Really cool grocery store. Almost makes me wonder if this is what Japan convience store feels like. Cashiers were extremely fast and. Low! It does get crowded and the some isles are narrow! Can't wait to come back to try the actual food! :)
google avatar

Shaheen N.

Yelp
Sushi 9/10 Onigiri 8/10 I love this cute market. It's perfect if you're craving some onigiri or a small sushi plate. Whenever I'm in little Tokyo I don't hesitate to stop by & pick up some snacks & munchies for later. I feel that the fresh food made here is high quality & better than some restaurants.

Yelp
My favorite grocery store in Little Tokyo, or my favorite of all! So much candy and food, has great service and the rice balls are sooo good

Yelp
Nice Japanese market tucked away in Little Tokyo. You'll find Nijiya Markets in California and Hawai'i so it kind of felt like I was back home in Hawaii. Haha. We mostly came here to get snacks and drinks to stock our room prior to going back to our hotel. They have a wide array of products available from fresh bentos and sushi to sake, bread, fruits, meat, and more. I was excited to see some familiar products that I enjoyed in Japan and picked up a few items. My favorite was spotting the Bikkle! It's a non-carbonated yogurt soft drink by Suntory packed with probiotics, nutrients and bacterial cultures which help balance acid in the gut and aid in digestion. I don't need all that, but just really enjoy the flavor. Haha. It's like an extra large Yakult, but better. All in all, we were able to pick up a handful of items and it didn't break the bank.

Yelp
New Year's Eve Dinner To-Go Set, picked up on December 31st - Gokujo Sandan-Ju Osechi _OS-1 (san no ju + ichi no ju + ni no ju) Store service: sincere + polite Price: See pictures (in store pre-order) Food Quality: excellent, high quality Remarks: - The osechi shipped directly from Japan. - Defrost before consuming. Consume immediately after defrosting.

Yelp
This was a super-cool grocery store in the heart of the Little Tokyo Mall (located in Los Angeles, California). They had a huge variety of fresh, frozen and pre-packaged Japanese-themed sundries; I wanted to try one of their onigiri and the pre-packaged chicken karaage and sliced shabu-shabu meat but there was no way of reheating or cooking them in the hotel room. We did get a couple bottles of water, souvenir reusable tote bags and a slice of Japanese Strawberry cream cake. The store is always crowded with locals and tourist alike and it's no surprise since there's so much to see and all the pre-packaged meals looks so good.

Tiffany T.

Yelp
Rating this specifically for their onigiri/rice balls. I've tried the spicy/non spicy salmon, spicy/non spicy tuna and cod roe onigiri. I come on weekdays around late lunch time. All the rice balls I listed above are very delicious. I haven't had any problems with stale or hard rice and each one has a good amount of filling. The cod roe is my favorite but the spicy tuna is a close 2nd. Each ball is about $2 so they make for cheap lunch options. Please note the spicy salmon is actually quite spicy. If you have a low tolerance you will suffer. I've also tried they're katsu sando but I was a bit disappointed. Flavor is very mild and it's about $6-$7. I'd personally just buy 3 rice balls but to each their own! Service was good as it's a grocery store. Be respectful and they're respectful back. It does get busy on Fridays since Little Tokyo is a popular spot and the isles in the market are small.
google avatar

Yelp
Small but robust. Authentically japanese products are abundant. Service is great. They used to have a public bathroom, but no more of that since COVID. Wonderful selection of freshes sushi and onigiri in town (forget Ralph's and WholeFoods). Excellent choice of sake, pickles, beers, and sweets. Plus noodle galore AND has a small produce department. Prices are lower than you might expect for a boutique grocery shop - if that's what you expected, just go to Erewhon and get your cold chicken nuggets for $29.99 a pound ;)
google avatar

Nanette L.

Yelp
It's everything you're looking for in a small, Japanese market. My daughter loved the ready to go food in the refrigerated section. I told her it's the most similar to 7-11 in Asia, Especially those triangle-shaped onigiris. There's a security guard and the place is cold and clean. The cashiers are very sweet.
google avatar

Tina C.

Yelp
Great selection of groceries, baked items, snacks, and food! The salmon onigiri was good, though the rice was a bit hardened. The spam musubi was delicious and fresh. The strawberry sandwich was a bit bland, but the milk bread had wonderful texture. Very reasonable prices for all items! There was a long line at checkout but the cashiers are all very efficient, so it moved quickly.
google avatar

Ray T.

Yelp
The uni and salmon bowl were so fresh and cheap! You get much more salmon than poke bowls and only half the price. It's more fresh than most of the poke I've had. The uni was also fresh and cheap. The rice balls are average. The market itself was well keep and clean.
google avatar

Winnie W.

Yelp
A must visit at Little Tokyo with all kinds of Japanese-Style lunch boxes, snack and food items at reasonable prices. You'll find fresh vegetables, fruits, and daily freshly-prepared lunch boxes and a wide selection of Onigiri ... yum yum yum!!! There's often a check out line but the line moves fast, and service is fast and efficient.
google avatar

Johnathan Y.

Yelp
Clean, organized, and well-maintained. No public restroom. Friendly staff. Relatively quick in and out if you know what you want.
google avatar

Benny H.

Yelp
Overpriced lower quality food, but when you're hungry for some quick snacks it will do in a pitch. There is a seven foot security guard who looks like Lurch and he seems confused half the time. Still they have juice from Japan and I love those things.
google avatar

Larry T.

Yelp
Pros - Awesome Onigiri and Sushi at great prices, has the pickles I need for my curry. Cons - Horrendous parking, would have been 5 stars if not for the horrible parking. Suggestion - Please open a location in or within the vicinity of Santa Clarita.
google avatar

Steven B.

Yelp
They have this stupid store policy of everyone showing their ID when there's only one person buying a beer/alcoholic drink. Great little market, but who the hell has the audacity to make these dumb ass made up rules. Can't even buy a goddamn beer without this 1984 policy crap being shoved in your face
google avatar

Stephanie L.

Yelp
The last time I had really good pre-made sushi was at a convenience store in Tokyo. And now I can say the last time is now at Nijiya. Good quality sushi at affordable prices! I was able to pick up some rolls, nigiri, and a katsu sandwich for $65. Since this market is located in a strip mall, I can see parking being an issue during peak hours.
google avatar

Nikhil R.

Yelp
This Asian grocery store is excellent for snacks. We came here to get some delicious sashimi and onigiri. The sashimi was surprisingly fresh and tasty, and the spicy tuna onigiri is so delicious and flavorful. Onigiri prices are also reasonable at just $2 each! I would definitely come here again if I'm the area.
google avatar

Vicky T.

Yelp
If you look for an affordable fresh Japanese food, sushi, snack, this is the place to go to. Comparing to all the overpriced restaurants around the plaza, this place has the best deal ever. Look at this much amount of uni for $11 while a restaurant charges you $28/ 2 tiny uni nigiri. The salmon poke has more salmon than rice. It's a perfect place to get high quality food for your date, you both get full and satisfied for your Japanese food craving, enjoy a nice vibe of Japanese village market, and don't go broke.

Yelp
LOVE THIS LITTLE HIDDEN GEM! GREAT SNACKS, MEAL IDEAS, AND THINGS I WANT TO TRY JUST BECAUSE! While we were waiting to be called for our sushi, my boyfriend and I walked the block to see what was around, and We found this little Asian market that had so many new little yummy things We would love to try! Now, We couldn't take too much because the parking was on the opposite side, and can't exactly take a bunch of groceries into a sushi restaurant (hell, I should've LOL) so my boyfriend and I grabbed a handful of things. We bought 1 Serrano chicken soup, 1 cheese almond stick, matcha chocolates, and 1 kimchi soup for 8.00! These were items I've never seen at target lol so I was so happy! Also, NO TAX?! YAS! Come thru new market! The customer service was great, my boyfriend and I didn't stick out like a sore thumb, i mean, let's be real...most people walk into certain stores and feel out of place when you can't read a label or guess what is in your hand lol BUUUUT- i kind love when that happens! LOL. Also, there was all types of colors and ethnicities in this little store, and that makes me happy! LA is known for being diverse with so many very different ethnicities and I truly LOVE IT. If you're looking for pork belly, Mochi, soups, and all types of candies, this place is for you! I'll be coming back really soon!!!
google avatar

Yan F.

Yelp
Still the same cute shop with some popular items. I got a few things. I think the prices are reasonable.
google avatar

Jua - Jewels T.

Yelp
FLEW on the day before embarking on a cruise. While in town, I explored the Japanese Little Tokyo Town. So much more than just a supermarket, there's yummy prepared food of all sorts! Had some sushi, and it did not disappoint at all. If you're ever driving thru LA, I'd recommend a stop at Little Tokyo Town to grab some snack or food from Nijiya Market.
google avatar

Sky T.

Yelp
This is right in the heart of Little Tokyo in DTLA so it can get pretty busy with people. Nonetheless, it has all your Japanese needs for the most part from pre-made meals to produce and more! I got some produce that they had a deal on enoki mushrooms (long thin white mushrooms) and an onigiri for my trip back home. The onigiri was pretty inexpensive for about $2. However, definitely a whole lot of rice compared to the filling. Still okay though for a cheap snack. There's a whole bunch of shops and restaurants nearby too that are opening up. So, it is getting pretty crowded, but they are limiting inside occupancy for the moment.
google avatar

George M.

Yelp
It's a great market with great products but the security guard is rude as hell and I have a run in with him every time I go here. This past weekend while I was waiting in line I realized I forgot something so I asked my 10 year old brother to wait in line for me as I run to get the food I forgot. When I came back the security guard was like "no you can't do that that's not allo you need to go to the back" it got to the point where the customer behind us stood up for me and say "it's okay they can go." I'm convinced he just likes to pick fights

Su W.

Yelp
Nijiya is great, but due to its location there will be many tourists and others visiting the plaza since it's in the center of Little Tokyo. It just makes the shopping experience a little more chaotic if you're doing regular grocery shopping. If you're just visiting, it's great and you should check it out! It's convenient to grab a few things if you happen to be around in the area, but I rather visit Mitsuwa in San Gabriel because there's ample parking and it's less chaotic.
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
We were picking up drinks and snacks for our bicycle ride. I found their selection of beers and snacks lacking. There were empty shelves. It could be because of the supply chain issues we've been having. But they did have spam musubi with egg! That's awesome. I liked their selection of onigiri a lot. Those triangle shaped rice balls are delicious. I tried eating them while riding my bicycle and made a mess of it. There's this thing you have to do in order to open it properly to make the seaweed match up with the rice. It is tough to do if you are driving or riding a bike. This place reminded me of supermarkets in Japan hence the five star review. They really need to stock those 9% alcohol shochu drinks, Strong Zero.

Abby M.

Yelp
The service its so bad, The cashier is very rude and incoherent and she-asked very stupid questions when collecting. I seriously recommend that you be careful since the customer service is so bad.
google avatar

Pat P.

Yelp
Great little market right in middle of the tourist trap of Little Tokyo. They have just about everything Japanese you can think of including snacks, candy, ramen, drinks, and more.
google avatar

Allen J.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and don't come near this shopping mall. Especially if you need to use a restroom. I bought $40 dollars worth of groceries and desperately needed to use a restroom but nope nada nothing. They don't have public restrooms. What a sh$t hole. Nonsense. Completely unacceptable. Shame on these stores and City of Los Angeles for not putting some paid restrooms or at least a few supervised porta potties I will NEVER visit this hell hole again

鈺堂

Yelp
品項豐富 服務親切 特別推薦熟食區的各種便當如鯖魚、蒲燒鰻、壽喜燒、牛肉、壽司捲,米飯也很美味 The items are rich and the service is kind. I especially recommend all kinds of bento in the cooked area, such as mackerel, grilled eel, sukiyaki, beef, sushi rolls, and the rice is also delicious.
google avatar

Brian I.

Yelp
Although Marukai is closer to me, this is a close second when I am looking for snacks. It's at the Japanese Plaza, which is a happening spot. You're more likely to see visitors and tourists at this location.

Walker R.

Yelp
Compared to their other location, I am so disappointed. The quality is lacking so immensely when compared to another location of this market that I've been to. So much so that i will not return. I could barely eat the onigiri and the strawberry cream sandwich. Overall, it's a decent market. But I was much disappointed with how what I bought tasted.
