History Tour: The Bronze Age World

"This Bronze Age stone circle is situated in a woodland clearing high on Stanton Moor. The curious arrangement consists of nine upright stones purposefully set in a 30-foot diameter circle. An additional lone stone sits about 100 feet away. As with most stone circles, nobody really knows why the strange formation was built. Generations of fertile imaginations have come up with their own mythological explanations. According to local legend, each of the nine boulders was a maiden turned to stone for the crime of dancing on the Sabbath. The tenth unfortunate individual, known as the King Stone, was their fiddler, who is said to come back to life to play once a year. These days, visitors to Stanton Moor are able to engage in recreational activities seven days a week without fear of being petrified. The area is popular for walking, picnicking, and of course the odd neo-Druid ceremony, particularly around the summer and winter solstices. Recent plans to reopen a quarry close to the stone circle were overthrown by the national park authority, so this tranquil Bronze Age relic should be guaranteed to persist for the foreseeable future." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

We did an easy and non-muddy outer circular walk from AllTrails. Worth seeking out the additional nearby features like the tower and the corkstone. Dry underfoot despite recent wet weather, beautiful long distance views and fascinating history over millennia.

Stanton Moor contains cairns, burial mounds, old quarries and at least three stone circles. Nine Ladies stone circle is the only one we found, and I suspect actually still present. The whole area is beautiful with great views all around. We walked and explored for a couple of hours, sat by the stones and had a great time. The maps showed dozens of historical landmarks, but once in the site you'll find no more information. Only Nine Ladies had it's own sign. I do like a bit more history and info. The roads are tiny and narrow. Look out for the official car park next to the active stone works to avoid blocking their local roads.

Lovely walk up to the nine ladies stone circle we went on a weekend so can get busy. There are plenty of other walks in the area so we'll worth the day out.

WHERE is the car park with a quick walk to the stones? I couldn't find it...walked up through the lovely woods, quarry ti the left, and at the top Google maps said 45mins left so pretty sure went wrong somewhere

Magical place. Better than any stone circle I've been to.

Stone Circle a mile walk from the road. It is worth a visit including a tower and an old quarry.

Such a peaceful place! Parked the car about 15 mins walk to the stone circle itself, easy path to follow but muddy on a wet day, so bring your wellies if you're heading out in the rain!!! Once at the stones, there is multiple paths you can take with stunning views all around. The stone circle is in a big open space of green, hard to miss it, as there is also an information board that explains its history. It brings a feeling of being very centered and a sense of calm. It's really beautiful and I would recommend to anyone who is in the area to go and explore. Saw many dog walkers, so dog friendly! My only downside is there isn't any bins as you're walking, only at where you can park your car so if you're planning on a picnic or your dog needs the loo, please take it with you and don't leave any litter!!

Stunning location to visit, it was very quiet when we went and hardly saw anyone else. Highly recommend, very magical and even better then I anticipated it would be :)
