Nira Caledonia, Edinburgh, Scotland - Explore & Book

"Nira Caledonia, the former home of literary figure John Wilson, was built in 1823 by renowned Scottish architect William Playfair. Nowadays, it’s an opulently decorated 27-bedroom hotel, occupying 2 townhouses of Gloucester Place, a Georgian crescent in the New Town. The location is fantastic - central yet tranquil - and there's even a leafy garden where you can soak up the peace and quiet. You're a short hop from Princes Street and the main sights, and bohemian Stockbridge with its antique shops, delis, independent boutiques and bookstores is on your polished doorstep. After dark, return to eat locally sourced regional specialities (haggis, venison, Highlands beef) in the sophisticated restaurant before settling down in the cosy bar to taste a vintage malt whisky from the vast array. Or perhaps 2. Because you're on holiday, and you'll sleep deeply thanks to vast beds with 2,000-pocket-sprung mattresses. As if you needed an excuse to order breakfast in bed... Highs Beautiful but comfortable rooms with Orient-inspired décor and lots of little luxuries (Nespresso machines, L’Occitane toiletries) The neo-classical features: floor-to-ceiling Georgian sash windows, detailed cornicing and gorgeous wooden floors Some Suites have Jacuzzis, and even the smaller rooms have glamorous stone bathrooms with tubs and showers Perfect for a romantic break, but extra beds mean it's great for families, too Lows No lift and no disabled access, but staff carry your bags to the room The restaurant is closed Sundays and Mondays We found the service to be friendly but a little impersonal No twin rooms" - Michelle McDermott

Staff are great, especially want to mention Kyle and Stefan. We stayed twice at this hotel, at the beginning and end of a multi day tour. Each room is somewhat different, and the entire hotel is very charming. The hotel is a set of older houses that have been converted into a small, upscale luxury hotel. The hotel is walking distance to the central area of Edinburgh. At our second stay, we were in one of the basement rooms, which has a small garden shared with the room next door. In the evening we sat on the patio with some friends, great place for conversation and some quiet time. The restaurant at the hotel is very good, our stay included breakfast. We did not try everything offered, but everything we tried was excellent. WiFi was excellent and high performance. No elevator, stairs are narrow and winding due to the age and nature of the building. Staff were very helpful in moving our suitcases up/down

We stayed here in June and had the absolute best time. We ended up having a problem with our laundry (there was a miscommunication) when we sent it out. The team went above and beyond to remedy the situation and we were thoroughly impressed. Special shout out to Matt who oversees everything who made it his personal mission to make things right. That ideal that is at the head runs through to the rest of the staff. We couldn't have stayed with a lovelier and attentive team whose goal was to ensure we were having a great time. All this AND the location was absolutely phenomenal. Perfectly situated in-between new town and Stockbridge. We had one of the smallest rooms which was perfect for quick stays but for longer stays we recommend getting one of the larger ones. Unlike other small hotels this one also had breakfast/dinner as an option in their mini restaurant on sight which was lovely. When you stay here you aren't staying in a tourist trap or a heavily trafficked location. Instead you will feel like a true local and the staff ensured you were treated thusly - like a neighbor. Couldn't say more delightful things - we will absolutely be returning!

We stayed for 4 nights and enjoyed Nira Caledonia a lot! The room was so beautiful and good size. Breakfast was very good and it was nice that still water bottles where available to take in the lobby. Prepare for a lot of stairs. The staff is very polite and they can help you carrying the luggage upstairs. Hotel is located in a quiet street and it takes about 20 minutes to walk up to Princess street. A couple of bus stops are also near by, so it is easy to take a bus if you get tired of walking up hill to town.

We had a great experience staying here!! The rooms were nice and the location was ideal for us. Service was impeccable! Attentive staff - Abby - helped with bags, dinner reservations and other recommendations. Abby was extremely professional and made our stay particularly enjoyable.

Google
Amazing location and easy access to Stockbridge shops, pubs and restaurants…also easy walk/bus to the mound. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Our breakfast was delicious but our room needed a refresh…the carpet was very worn and stained…peeling paint on the ceiling and the bathroom was dingy.

I had a good short stay at Nira Caledonia. The room was comfortable and well-appointed, offering a cozy retreat after exploring the city. It is close enough to easily explore the city but not in the center of the busy tourist areas. I enjoyed drinks in their small bar area in the evening—great atmosphere and service. Breakfast the next morning was delicious, with quality options to start the day right. Would definitely return for another visit.

I stayed at the Nira Caledonia in room 6-3 (on the top floor) for a 5-night stay at the beginning of July. My room was beautifully appointed, and I appreciated having two windows I could open for air flow, plus an oscillating fan for when it was a bit muggy outside. There is no elevator, so my legs and lungs got a good workout heading up to my room each day. My only complaint was that there didn't seem to be a place in the bathroom to plug in hair tools, so I sat on my bed with the bathroom door open and did my hair from across the bathroom. The staff are all very kind and accommodating and the breakfast in the downstairs restaurant was delicious. I genuinely recommend others to stay here! It's only about a 10 minute walk to the city and in a quiet area. A great find!

Nira Caledonia is an excellent boutique hotel. The room was clean and comfortable, the bathroom always filled with luxury soaps, and the staff very helpful. They carried my bag to my room upon check in and gave wonderful recommendations throughout Edinburgh. ||Abi was particularly helpful in chasing down a dinner reservation for me on multiple occasions. She was professional, communicative, and went the extra mile. I’d absolutely recommend Nira Caledonia for your next trip to Edinburgh.

Yelp
What a sweet boutique hotel within walking distance of Edinburgh! The hotel was for sure an old world charm with all the modern amenities available. The rooms were small but it was packed with all the modern amenities!! The breakfast was wonderful and fresh and the wine the perfect touch to take October room after walking the streets of Edinburgh in the evenings. The concierge at the front was very helpful each time we had a question. The only thing I could possibly suggest is adding some type of water seal to the shower door. While taking a shower water just poured out from the seem at the bottom. Other than that the bed was comfie, the curtains perfect for keeping out the light late at night and the hot water kettle a sweet touch for making the first pot in the morning or a late night chamomile!

Yelp
This hotel is terrible. The room was poorly lit and the shower leaked allover the bathroom floor. The staff was unhelpful/ unresponsive and the breakfast was skimpy and unappealing. Overall, not worth the money.

Yelp
These are some of the friendliest and hospitable hotel crew I've come into contact. We arrive at the hotel, only to find out there was a hotel fire two weeks prior and Priceline had cancelled our reservation only hours before arriving. Lee and George at the front desk spent over 30 minutes to get Priceline to rebook our reservation with another hotel (as Nira didn't have rooms available). After finding no help from Priceline, Lee and George showed us a smaller room downstairs that worked out perfectly for us. The location was perfect, right close walk to all the places you want to try out. The rooms were very clean and recently upgraded to make you feel right at home. The free breakfast choices were amazing as well. We loved Edinburgh and would def come back to stay at Nira.

Yelp
A very beautiful hotel in one of the best locations in Edinburgh (Stockbridge). Literally down the road is a high street with excellent restaurants and drinking spots, an Aesop and some shopping. It's a short walk to the river and close to a pretty common. The breakfast comes included and it's really great- you can get a 'made to order' hot breaky or just stick to the cold buffet (cheese, salmon, cereals, very good break selection and fruit/yoghurt). All of the staff here are next level good and will help you in anyway that they can. The bathrooms are varied sizes, some are really small and a little pokey but clean and modern. They come with l'occotaine toiletries. Amazing. A really good selection of extras including some slippers. The bedrooms themselves start kind small depending on which room you book but they are, again, clean and really cosy. I found mine a little too hot but they moved me to a different room which I could sleep with a window open. Each room comes with a pod coffee machine, kettle and the bigger rooms come with an iPod player. There is also usb charge stations in all rooms- you just need a chord. Some of the back rooms have an insanely beautiful view over Edinburgh. Book direct on their webpage and receive a complimentary have bottle of champagne.

Yelp
My first review of 2013, and it's a good one, so let's hope this is a sign of things to come. As you may know, I have a bit of a beef (if you pardon the pun) about steak places in Edinburgh. Too often, the preparation of the our wonderful Scottish beef leaves a lot to be desired, and certainly doesn't match the quality of the ingredient. In the Nira Caledonia's lovely hotel restaurant, we found the best steak that we've comes across in Edinburgh, so far. Sourced from Perthshire supplier, Highland Drovers, what they serve is Highland cow. The depth of flavour of their fillet was quite exceptional. In addition to this, they prepare their steaks on a Josper charcoal grill, which is a serious piece of cheffy kitchenware. I ate the pheasant, and it was also extremely good. We had a really good elderflower, prosecco and mint cocktail, which started off the meal, beautifully. And the soup, a prawn bisque was first class, too. The restaurant, to date, has almost solely catered for those staying at the smart boutique hotel. However, the secret is out, and people should really give this place a go, next time they're looking for beautifully sourced meat, seafood and game, in very smart New Town surroundings. Overall, we said: "the Nira Caledonia was an absolute gem. They have a few execution errors to brush up on, but they have the potential to be one of the finest hotel restaurants of their type in the city. Certainly their steak is excellent, and alone merits a visit. The service is friendly and accurate, their wine list comprehensive and very reasonable, and the stylish dining room is packed with elegant New Town charm. I'd heartily recommend a visit to the Nira Caledonia at your earliest convenience."

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here for during our babymoon and had a fabulous time! The room was a comfortable well appointed! It was furnished with modern amenities while maintaining, it's old world charm, our room had a great view of the garden and it was quite nice to be able to look out the floor to ceiling window in the morning while sipping on a cup of tea. My only complaint was that there were no elevators to take us to our rooms and we had a bit of luggage since we were traveling for two weeks! The room was a bit small, but that is to be expected with a boutique hotel. The staff at the front desk was extremely helpful when we had an issue with our credit cards and had to call our bank from overseas! They made great recommendations as to where to go for dinner and which historical sights were worth the visit! The complimentary Scottish breakfast was excellent, the service was quick and the food selection was vast, I was told that everything on the menu was sourced locally, which you could really taste. It's truly a great way to start off your day. I highly recommend the smoked salmon and eggs, it was simply divine. The dining room is busy in the morning, but I'm glad we were able to take our time without feeling rushed, go earlier if you want a quiet breakfast. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay, I wish Nira Caledonia was a little closer to all the attractions, but it was fairly simple to get a taxi back to our room! We would definitely stay here again, if we are ever back in Edinburgh!

Yelp
A warm and comfortable hotel in converted old townhouses. It has a friendly and hard working staff that took pains to help us. We were on the top floor in a small, beautifully done room during unusually hot weather and they moved us to a garden level suite that had great skylights to let air in. Both rooms had bathrooms with towel heaters. The smaller room had a fancier shower/jacuzzi tub with rain shower head. Each room is different here. Our one dinner at the hotel was good with a good selection of Scottish produced foods. Just ask for meat to be a bit more rare than you would ask for in the US and it should be perfect.

Yelp
After reading a great review of this place in ion magazine me and the girlfriend decided to visit and were not disappointed. Our staters of mussels and venison carpaccio were amazing and the steaks we had as mains were out of this world. Could not manage desserts after the mains but will be going back to try them some time soon. If you want steak in Edinburgh this is the place to go. Kyloe is great but too busy and just not that Intermit. I'm certain to be coming here for some time.

Yelp
Showed up and found they had cancelled our reservation 2 days before. Said our room was now "out of order". We booked through Expedia, so am guessing they cancelled our room vs others who booked directly at a higher rate. No word from anyone ahead of time. So now we're frantically trying to find a new hotel on a Saturday in June. Also, this hotel is a bit far from town down a fairly steep hill, so if you stay here, plan on taking a cab whenever you go out. Additionally, it's 3:00 and other guests are now arriving and being told there is a hold up in getting rooms available. Doesn't seem like they have there act together. Would highly recommend finding somewhere else to stay.

Yelp
Look no further. This boutique hotel is wonderful. Very charming. Excellent neighborhood. Fabulous breakfast that was included when I booked. The staff especially Josh and George went out of their way to help make dinner recommendations and reservations. Nice added touch.

Yelp
Gorgeous hotel in a great location. It's a bit of a walk to get to the Royal Mile and castle, but it's a beautiful walk. The continental breakfast is delicious - way better than any continental breakfast I've had elsewhere, and the restaurant's dinner is delicious, too. The staff is very friendly and eager to help. Always a plus in my book that they're willing to hold your luggage if you arrive before check-in, or if you want a few more hours in town after check-out but before you leave town.
