Magical place. Hidden in the ‘Japanese Alps’ region, beautiful traditional onsen. Several baths available to enjoy, with a private half hour session offered to each couple to use one of two private baths. Service was exceptional, with dinner and breakfast both filling as well as delicious. Several more local dishes on the menu, so be prepared to try something different / new if you have a Western palate! Hotel itself needs some small renovation in areas, but ultimately a very relaxing and ‘authentic’ experience. Worth going to just experience the place at least once!

Keiunkan is truly a magical, silent place - perfect for those seeking to experience the heart of Japanese tradition while completely immersing themselves in nature. Imagine soaking in steaming hot springs with a view of the surrounding mountains, all while deer or monkeys occasionally appear in the distance. The feeling is absolutely unforgettable. I've been to Japan seven times and have visited many hot spring resorts across the country, but I can confidently say this place is truly unique. It stands out not only for its historical charm but also for the serenity and authenticity it offers. For any hot spring lover, this is a must-visit. The hospitality here deserves special mention - the staff were beyond friendly and thoughtful. Every interaction felt warm and sincere, and you can tell they take real pride in making your stay special. From the moment we arrived, we felt genuinely welcomed and cared for. And the food -- simply gorgeous! The kaiseki-style meals were not only beautifully presented but absolutely delicious. Don't just take my word for it -- check out the photos from other reviewers. Every dish was a work of art and a delight for the senses. While the hotel provides a convenient shuttle from the nearest train station, I highly recommend renting a car. The area is peaceful and driving around is a pleasure. Having a car also gives you the freedom to explore other beautiful spots nearby at your own pace. If you're looking for a place to relax, reconnect with nature, and enjoy authentic Japanese culture, Keiunkan is a gem you shouldn’t miss.

An incredible once in a lifetime authentic Japanese experience. The staff put so much effort into creating the most special stay. A range of pretty rooms, intricate food differing with each meal, located In the quiet countryside (many public onsens were empty when we used them) creating such a peaceful relax. Private dining room assigned to each room with many courses, although breakfast must be taken before 8:30am.

What amazed me most during my stay at Keiunkan wasn’t just the serene hot springs or the beautiful mountain setting—it was the thought that this inn has been in continuous operation since 705 AD. How is that even possible? The secret lies in a rare blend of deep family stewardship, respect for tradition, and the ability to quietly adapt over time. Keiunkan isn’t just a business—it’s a legacy, carefully preserved across 50+ generations. A true testament to long-term thinking and cultural dedication. Therefore, Service and traditional Japanese menu (evening/morning) are excellent! Enjoy your stay in this very old location to refresh your mind and spirit!

My 10 out of 10 for Japan, merging old world culture and modern conveniences this Onsen is worth the travel. Book it between big city visits for a chance to defrag and be at peace amongst the sound of the two rivers converging, excellent service and food that is out of this world. The mineral baths were beautiful and had every amenity covered. Loved it!!

This onsen was absolutely fantastic. I think the best place I've ever stayed. The hot springs themselves are really nice, and there are so many options: both open air and indoor, on the top and bottom floors. Everything is super clean and modern amenities are plentiful. You can even book a private onsen for just one person. The river and mountain scenery from all floors / onsens is absolutely beautiful. There are a variety of places to relax after the onsens including little tea/vending machine stations. The hotel itself is steeped in tradition and culture; it has been recognized as the oldest inn in the world. Many notable individuals across Japanese history have visited the location. The history of the area is well described in Japanese and English on many of their documents and menus. Multi-course meals were included with our rooms and were delicious. They represented the local ingredients and dishes in the area - alongside waygu and excellent sashimi! Staff were super accommodating with dietary restrictions. The staff are also incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. They were super helpful as guides and also so welcoming - they managed to secure a cab for us to see Mt Fuji, Oshino Hakkai, and Mt. Minobu. I honesty think this was the highlight of my trip to Japan. I highly, highly recommend staying here. Thank you to all the staff and management who made this experience so memorable! I'm sorry I did not include all your names here - but I'm grateful to all of you.

I can't rate the experience because sadly when we arrived for our check-in ( after having to rent a car specifically for going to this hotel driving many hours, fighting with roads closure) we were informed while waiting IN THE RECEPTION that our reservation was cancelled and the hotel is closed. According to them a cancellation was sent some days in advance and information was posted in their "homepage" ( NOT in the English one) Funny thing, we received the cancellation message while being in the reception room. Horrible experience, very stressful, a full day waisted. And extra cost with car rental etc... Which could have been avoided if informed forehand of the cancellation. on top we have now to deal with Booking who says we are not entitled to reimbursement when we never broke our agreement. So by now we only lost a huge amount of money we already paid for NOTHING.
