Our stay at NJV Plaza Athens was a frustrating mix of excellent fundamentals and shockingly poor execution, particularly for premium events. I would have shared this feedback directly with the manager when he was doing our checkout, but he didn’t ask how our stay was—a telling first note.
The Good (The Hotel Itself):
· Staff: Generally great, friendly, and helpful.
· Room: Really clean, nice, and comfortable. A shame the balcony door couldn’t be opened.
· Location: Perfect for exploring Athens.
The Dismal (The New Year's Eve Gala & Dining):
We booked the hotel's NYE party, excited for a special night. For €250 per person, our expectations were high. The reality was a severe letdown.
· Venue & Ambience: We "celebrated" in a dreary conference room with minimal festive decor—no hats, balloons, or atmosphere. A lovely singer performed Christmas songs to a mediocre DJ.
· Service & Fairness: Service was neglectful; we had to flag staff for every drink (despite paying extra). The most galling aspect was the blatant preferential treatment given to a "VIP" table. Managers fussed over them constantly, while our table was forgotten. Despite all paying the same for the same package, they received attentive service and their meals arrived promptly, highlighting a clear two-tier system.
· The Food & Timing (A Fiasco): The amuse-bouche was promising, but it was all downhill.
· A thick, tasteless scallop.
· Cold, overcooked poached lobster.
· The main course wait was unforgivable. We started eating at 9:30 PM. By 11:30 PM, we were still waiting for our beef fillet while the later-arriving VIP table was already served — ours was cold, un-rested (one bled profusely), with cold, dry bread on the side.
· We were forced to wolf down cold food to get outside for midnight, as we didn't want to view the fireworks through 1 of 3 windows. After we had been told earlier in the day that their was a balcony view.
· Dessert was a cold, unappealing tart. The "included" celebratory drink was cheap sparkles at midnight.
· New years day room service: we missed breakfast so decided to treat ourselves. We ordered eggs waffle and bacon and the other scrambled eggs with avocado told 30 mins no issue. It arrives cold so we call and complain they send up new again cold fried eggs and cold scrambled eggs so we gave up and they removed from the bill. The coffee came with hot UHT milk—unacceptable for a 5-star property. The buffet breakfast was just okay but cold, and they had the audacity to charge extra for items like omelets or eggs Benedict on top of the €32 buffet price.
· Housekeeping: Inconsistent. They took coffee cups but left old room service trays and bread and UHT milk and you had to call room service to get top up pods after your first day.
Be Warned: Avoid rooms near the laundry chute (e.g., 10 or 12); loud banging starts from 8 AM.
Verdict:
Would I stay again? Yes, but only for the location and the clean room. The core hotel experience is decent. However, I implore you to avoid the hotel's premium dining and events at all costs. The NYE gala was an overpriced, poorly executed, and unfairly managed conference-room disaster. The pervasive issue of cold food from the gala to room service to the buffet is a critical kitchen/service failure.
The staff are lovely, but management's oversight on event planning, kitchen execution, and equitable customer service is severely lacking. Enjoy the bed and the Syntagma square view, but dine and celebrate elsewhere in Athens—you'll find far better value, food, and service.
