No 1 by GuestHouse, York, a Design Boutique Hotel York, United Kingdom

"A boutique hotel in the heart of York just a 10-minute walk from York Minster. The building is a Grade II Listed Regency townhouse with sash windows, high ceilings, a sweeping central staircase, and ivy around the door. Inside you’ll find pantries stocked full of treats, great restaurant food throughout the day, drinks from the bar and a spa centered on bespoke therapies. There’s 38 bedrooms, including three suites that are dotted around the building’s three floors. Each one has its quirks courtesy of the building’s heritage detailing. The rooms feature a flat-screen Smart TV, tea/coffee making facilities, an iron and hairdryer in the wardrobe. The spa sits down in the arches of the cellar. It’s a cocooning world of bespoke wellbeing experiences. There are five treatment rooms, including a room for two. And a soothing space for post-treatment relaxation. The Marmalade Lounge at No.1 is where the perfect afternoon tea is served. It combines savory and sweet treats that honor the noble tradition but brings playful flavors together to give it a twist for today. Pearly Cow is there for when something more substantial is needed. Pearly Cow is a new restaurant at 1, Clifton that is devoted to respecting what thrives nearby – the herds, breeds, crops, and catches that sum up the area’s flavor. The produce of land and sea we source is strictly the best – the wildest. Breakfast is light, hearty, or kick-starting with oysters and spiced-as-you-like bloody Marys. Lunch and dinner feature star ingredients in classics, interpretations, sharing dishes, and divine desserts. And kids have their own Pearly Calves menu. Afternoon tea is afternoon sea – a very fresh take on this timeless treat. And on Sundays, traditional roasts bring a beautiful close to the week A paid private car park is located on site. York Railway Station can be reached in 15 minutes on foot." - My Boutique Hotel (en)

"A beautifully preserved landmark Regency townhouse provides the stately and dignified raw material for No.1 by GuestHouse, and its interiors, rather than coast on their 19th-century inspiration, tastefully incorporate influences reaching all the way to the present day. Its 39 rooms range from cozy-but-luxe Small rooms on up to suites made from what were once a drawing room and a library; they’ve also found space for a spa as well as a stylish restaurant, a bar with a sun terrace, and the Marmalade Lounge, a perfect venue for the great English institution of afternoon tea." - Tablet Hotels

"No.1's classic Georgian frontage, with its stone-pillared portico and shiny-black double-doors, suggests townhouse grandeur, pomp and circumstance. Step inside, however, and… hello, this is rather cool! Black curtains frame a high-ceilinged hall with a mirrored cabinet of flickering silver candle-sticks, and a black-walled stairwell (decorated with black violins) that sweeps up three floors to a glass canopy. To the left, a toy train rumbles around a fire-warmed clubby bar where Johnny Cash plays on a turntable. To the right, a golden-hued sitting-room, with creamy floorboards and big abstract art, invites relaxation with velvet armchairs and sofas. Downstairs a vaulted spa beckons, while at the far end an atmospheric dining room promises innovative food with a focus on the area’s flavour. The vibe is lounge-y and fun – this is the second of the small-group, family-friendly GuestHouse hotels – with witty touches, such as model trains, that reference the city. Throughout, walls are hung with a jolly jumble of contemporary portraits, still lives and framed vintage worksheets for DIY home furniture. Bedrooms, on the other hand, are spare and light, with milky walls, floaty muslin and – oh joy! – turntables and vinyls. Just the right restorative space after doing the city’s sights. Highs We love the witty, arty and assured style, from the black-painted violins lining the staircase to the vintage-inspired dining room and the eclectic art collection Fun touches in the bedrooms include retro turntables and vinyls, plus hospitality trays and home-made biscuits hidden in a doll’s houseIf arriving by train, the hotel can meet with a luggage-bike and whisk away your bagsThe Pantry’s complimentary treats – ice cream, sweets, cakes, crisps and soft drinks – are generous and irresistible Lows The hotel sits on a busy main road – extra care needed with children – with no interesting views Apart from a small road-facing terrace at the front, there’s no garden or outside spaceThe ‘small’ and ‘standard’ rooms (around half the total) can be a squeeze; you need to be tidyThe hotel is very dog- and child-friendly; there’s a chance it may not be as tranquil as you might wish" - Helen Pickles

We stayed for our honeymoon and it was a very nice experience. The staff were very friendly and even left us a nice welcome gift to celebrate our marriage. The rooms were very well laid out, spacious and clean. We had breakfast included, which was lovely and there was a good variety of options. The location was ideal as it was a short walk to the city centre. It is also a very dog friendly hotel and the staff were very accommodating for our little Cocker Spaniel. Would highly recommend.

I stayed here on a weekend trip while visiting my son from London. Our rooms were lovely with every convenience we could want, and the little extras that make you feel special. The hotel had exemplary staff. They have a very cozy bar that we enjoyed after a long day of sightseeing. It's an easy 10 minute walk from the crazy tourist attractions, so great location. Truly a perfect stay and well worth the money.

The stay was absolutely perfect ! The employees are super nice with a special thanks to the breakfast lady that is especially kind and put you in a good mood the second she shows up! The room, the bed, the service, the coffee and the rest are perfect ! The only negative point goes to the American woman in the next room having a phone call at midnight shouting like someone that didn't understand that even of the person is far away you can actually keep the conversation to yourself. I hope she found a place to stay for the rest of her vacation though.

This hotel was easy to walk to from the station and to walk into the city. Staff were friendly and helpful . Rooms- nice, large bathroom, clean and comfortable. The pantry was a nice touch and enjoyed by a lot of guests , I say this as it was outside our bedroom door and was visited frequently when we were in . Breakfast was good with plenty options good friendly service. I would definitely return to this hotel when next in York, and would recommend .

The hotel is truly beautiful with great attention to detail. I stayed for two nights, and my room was near the stairs—unfortunately, both nights were disrupted by late-night stomping noises, possibly from guests or staff. The second night was particularly busy, and I ended up having to raise a complaint. I had booked a spa package upon arrival. While the massage was relaxing, it didn’t quite feel like a full 60 minutes—more like 45 minutes of actual treatment. Afterward, my lunch was delayed by over 30 minutes. The staff did offer a complimentary drink to make up for it, which I really appreciated. The rooms are lovely with thoughtful touches, though they feel a bit cramped. That said, the table fan provided was enough to keep cool during the hot weather. Despite the few negatives, I’m still giving 4 stars because the staff were genuinely polite, attentive, and eager to help. And a big plus—the free pantry is a fantastic perk!

Great location. Fabulous old building which has had an innovative refurbishment. The first big positive was the excellent breakfast, where the food and service were both faultless. I also liked the pantry, offering complimentary soft drinks, snacks and cake for you to help yourself during the day. We booked very last minute so could only choose between the 2 smallest rooms - our room (25) was 18m square at the very top of the house with a cabin bed. It had everything we needed and was very quiet, even with the window open overnight, so I would recommend requesting a room at the back of the building as other reviews commented the road noise was intrusive. There was a fan in the room, which was sufficient for our needs, but in the height of summer the lack of air con would likely have been an issue. The hotel prides itself on providing a vinyl selection in every room with a record player - the player in our room was not working. Not a big deal but I wonder how long that had been the case. I have given 4/5 stars in the main because the welcome from reception staff was a little lack lustre.

What a fabulous find this hotel is! I originally chose it because I wanted on-site parking. What we got was so much more: friendly service from people who not only smiled and said hello, but asked our daily plans and actually seemed to care about the answer; a charming, comfortable room decorated with loving details; a pantry that not only made sure we never went hungry but even allowed us to try some unfamiliar British candies; and an easy yet interesting walk to get within the city walls. This place would be hard to beat in the future.

We loved this hotel. The staff was amazing and the whole atmosphire. Hotel is near the city center and many sightseeing sights. Our luggage was collected from the train station. We walked to the hotel, drank tea first and checked in to the hotel after that. Tea felt lovely after flight and train journey. We highly recommend this hotel.

Yelp
The Grange Hotel is a big gorgoues, upmarket hotel. I go there for a meal rather than to stay. Food is fantastic quality and service is great. I'm going in a few weeks for afternoon tea and really looking forward to it as never had their afternoon tea before. Highly recommended but is a little pricey.

Yelp
This is the best hotel I have ever stayed in. The whole place is decorated in a mix of victorian garb with some modern preppy twists and is full of quirky and classic character. The walls have beautiful wallpaper and there are tons of cute touches like three sheets of gold-pressed The Grange stationary. Breakfast is served in the beautiful basement/cellar restaurant and is delicious and artfully made. I enjoyed my stay so very much.

Yelp
We loved this hotel experience. We only had 2 days and 1 night in York and this was an elegant and inviting place. The room was very roomy and had a modern bath and shower. The bed was super comfy. The restaurant is in the basement, which must have originally been a wine cellar, so it has a lot of character. The food was excellent, but a bit pricey. You're going for the experience. Be sure to book a table for dinner, because it's apparently a treat for locals as well. The staff showed us a shortcut through the museum gardens to the town center, which increased the walkability rating for us and was much nicer than the regular streets & sidewalks. We'd go back in a heartbeat.

Yelp
After staying at the Midlands in Manchester, I was a little disappointed in the Grange. It was about the same price, and York is more interesting than Manchester, but it had some issues. No lift for example and the staff was nowhere as solicitous as at Midlands. When we got up to the room, it was warm as at that time of day the sun was coming in the window and there was no air. We were told they would send up a fan, but a guy appeared to let us know all the fans were already given away. Also even though we are technically seniors by age, not by self identification, they stuck us on the third floor, as I say with no lift. To walk down to historic York was too short to cab but a healthy walk just to get to the wall. We took a sight seeing bus to get the lay of the land in York, hopped off at Shambles and ended up walking back. Then we did the bus again because I didn't feel we had gotten our money's worth and took the full loop. Unlike the Midlands, the Grange decided we did not qualify for the continental breakfast, and overall the breakfast at the Midlands was far superior. There have to be better, cheaper places in York, but I don't envision ever going back there, having seen it once is enough for a lifetime.
