Yelp
Great food, unique and beautiful decor, outstanding waitstaff! One upfront issue: this restaurant promotes itself as serving izakaya style, aka tapas, aka "small dishes", which is great if priced as appetizer or sampling portions prices, but a number of them are well above $25. So, actually 5 stars for food, 5 stars for service and ambiance/decor, 3-4 stars for price.
For my King of Toros roll, I spent a fair amount more than my wife's and daughter's orders and would definitely have been left still hungry. Fortunately, my wife and daughter are small (more regular?) eaters than me, so I was satisfied after helping them finish theirs. My toro roll was excellent, high quality, melt-in-your-mouth fresh. I'm not a fan of fresh ginger, but in Japan the ginger was unusually good, so I tried it here, and it was also good enough that I had a piece between each sushi bite as a palate cleanser. Interestingly, the ginger has a pleasantly sweet aftertaste. The edamame with garlic was also good, but I gotta say no one beats Alan Wong's garlic edamame.
Fortunate for my daughter, who can't resist a good risotto, Robata Jinya *just added* crispy rice sautéed mushroom risotto on their new menu! Our server forewarned it takes 30 min to prepare due to the nature of the dish, but either the sake made time fly, or it was way shorter than 30 min because it came out only 5-10 min after ours! Interestingly in a great way it's served similarly to hot stone bibimbap where the rice is further seared against the super hot bowl. Here it's served in a earthenware-like small pot. Our server added dashi broth at the table and mixed it in while searing it against the sides of the pot (a nice show). and it was delicious! Quantity was actually impressively larger than expected, even more than at other restaurants.
My wife ordered the Japanese wagyu sukiyaki ramen. She LOVED hers. But for all you normal-sized people, it won't likely fill you up. The broth, though, was so unique! THICK, rich and full-bodied. also on the sweet side, which to us three was pleasantly good. I would've felt a bit weird ordering ramen here when Jinya Ramen is literally next door, which would then have been, "Well, why didn't we just eat next door then??" (Maybe the ramen next door would've been regular sized? need to try eating there too! sheesh, I need to retire in order to have enough time to eat at all these places)
My wife and I had the "fan favorites" sake flight, which was very good. Our daughter had the Flying Violette "on the sweeter side" (because she likes her drinks sweeter) - Suntory vodka base and truly a unique flavor I've never tasted before, hard to put into words. For what it's worth, my daughter finished her drink like it was dessert. Having said that, we were too full for dessert, but those sitting next to us ordered a dessert that "included a show" - you'll just have to see it for yourself! Other food items came out smoked (under a large Mr Freeze helmet-like glass case) or on fire - will have to try those out on our next tasting! But I also want to try out their omakase soon too, dang it.
