On the Grid : Nodo Donuts

"For gluten-sensitive souls, donuts are generally a no-go. Not anymore. Nodo are spreading the love ‘round Newstead by making delish donuts that everyone can enjoy. Choose raw or baked, but they’re all guilt-and-gluten-free, and chock full of wholesome ingredients like freeze dried berries, banana and cacao. Nodo’s philosophy? Eat Donuts for Breakfast. Now that’s a mantra we can get behind." - Bigfish

We had a blueberry lemon & a native custard apple donut & a coffee. The donuts were a cake consistency, but gluggy. Coffee was ok, but small serving sizes ($6+ for a large). Quite noisy inside seating. Staff were pleasant.

I was really excited to try Nodo, but unfortunately the experience was a major disappointment. Our coffees were extremely watered down, mine looked more like a cup of milk than a latte. While the service itself was fine, the food was where things really went wrong. There were four of us, and we ordered: 2x ham, cheese & tomato toasties 1x poached eggs 1x eggs Benedict The toasties were barely toasted, the cheese tasted off, and the amount of ham was excessive to the point that it was dripping a clear liquid. None of us could finish them. The poached eggs were served on what was easily the hardest piece of toast I’ve ever been given, and could have been mistaken for a block of birdseed, it was also impossible to cut into. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience. I genuinely hope the owners review the menu quality and kitchen consistency, because this visit unfortunately put me off returning to the café

It was my first time trying Nodo so I opted for their October special - the Bavarian pie donut. I was skeptical about gluten free donuts at first but this was delicious. The donut itself was surprisingly moist and was dipped in a layer of smooth and decadent milk chocolate, which was balanced perfectly by the light and airy mousse. The biscuit crumb on top added a nice texture to the dish as well. The place also had a lovely clean and modern ambiance and I will definitely be back to try all their other flavours.

NODO did not disappoint. A busy buzzing Saturday brunch filled with donuts, the most delicious and innovative eggs Benny I’ve experienced and a Salted Caramel Waffle that will be sure to add an extra splash of wiggle jiggle! Service was IMMACULATE & the hospitality was heavenly. Even their customers are super kind and friendly ! We walked in starving and walked out with our bellies and souls full to the brim! Thank you Emma & crew

Nodos is a pretty decent spot. The decor is nice and modern, so it feels comfortable without being overly stuffy. The food, though, is the real highlight. We tried the braised octopus, which was perfectly tender, and the pan-seared duck breast was cooked just right with a nice crispy skin. The flavors were great. The service was fine. All in all, it’s a solid choice for a good meal out.

Nodo Newstead has some serious strengths—starting with the food. The greens bowl was packed with flavour and beautifully presented. Portion size was on the smaller side, especially at $25, but the quality was undeniable. The donuts and sweets looked absolutely incredible—definitely eyeing those for next time. Coffee was decent, but my long black came out without any crema, which was a bit of a letdown. Service was a bit underwhelming too—I had to ask to order, which took away from the experience slightly. Still, the food alone makes it worth a visit. A few small tweaks to service and coffee, and it could be a five-star spot.

We’ve been Nodo customers since they opened, and we are huge fans of their food. It breaks my heart to give a four star review, but our experience has been that their customer service (at least across their Newstead and Southbank locations) has been below the Australian standard. The staff are rarely proactive, often needing several prompts to seat groups, take orders, bring our plates, etc. When the Newstead location first opened, this wasn’t the case, but the quality of the customer service has consistently continued to drop. Their donut selection is fantastic, and absolutely delicious. Also highly recommend the burgers, harvest bowl, sandwiches and gluten free bread. Honestly, the food is brilliant, just really wish there was the consistent quality of customer service to match.
