An insider's guide to Fukuoka, Japan - SilverKris

"A nearby island reached by a short ferry ride that’s prized for seasonal displays of colorful blooms—sunflowers, hydrangeas and Japanese camellias among them—and for offering unobstructed sea views, making it a popular quick retreat for nature and photography enthusiasts." - SilverKris

A good half day trip for your Fukuoka stay. 10 minutes boat ride from Meinohama ferry and another 10 mins shuttle ride from the ferry station to the park. Beautiful landscapes and great view of Fukuoka bay area. Park features different flowers around the year, dependent on the season. There’s a nice grill restaurant where we ate.

It is a peaceful and beautiful island. If you are a traveller in Fukuoka, it is a must visit. It doesn’t cost that much but the scenery this place can offer is top tier. The sunflower is in season of summer and every different season they offer different flowers. They also have restaurants and offer sumptuous meals and recreational activities you may enjoy.

The island is so peaceful. We rented bike for 1000yen near the port. Had a hard time riding a bike uphill since I get tired easily and it’s a hot summer day. But riding a bike downhill is an amazing experience, best decision than riding a bus. We get to roam around the island on our own time. The staff at the bike rental gave us a map showing the bike trail separated from the main road. The staff can speak a little english as well. They are very kind. Once we arrived at the Island Park, there’s a free wifi. Overall this is the main highlight of our Fukuoka Trip, the most memorable and serene island we’ve ever visited.

Nice place to visit but be cautious in planning as the ferry departs every hour however the shuttle bus might not be matching the ferry schedule

A beautiful island that is quiet, tranquil and yet has sufficient attractions on it to make it worth a visit. Arrival is by ferry from Meinohama Ferry Terminal and there is an island wide bus service. However do be prepared for long walks which can prove interesting n rewarding. There are many fruit n vegetable farms along the roads. Major attractions are the Nokonoshima Island Park which is filled with beautiful flower beds in Spring, truly a gorgeous park which is well maintained n planned. There are food outlets n ample toilets there. The island is also suitable for camping and seaside bathing n there is a seaside camp(families/children) where one can make enquiries. The beaches are clean n have palm trees swaying in the breeze, very much like a beach resort. The Island is definitely worth a day trip n is highly recommended.

Beautiful place but no cherry blossom yet. We went on 20 March 2022. Only rapseed flower available now. The ticket price is 1200 yen, little bit expensive I think. Ferry fare is 230 yen and the bus fare from ferry terminal to nokonoshima park is 240 yen. You can check the detailed time tables on their website. Also check the flower status properly before you go there. The park looks so dull without the flowers.

Had a long and relaxing walk. Very quiet place with a great view. Half day tour is enough but they have Cafes and souvenir shop inside if you want to stay longer. Also nice place to have a picnic. Definitely one of the best places ive been to in Fukuoka.

Was here during our Nov~Dec 2016 Japan trip. A very quiet and beautiful Island which I immediately fall in love with. Heartfelt tranquility and the peacefulness of this Island as it was not the flower blooming season yet; in which will normally be flooded with tourists from all over the world (March - April)

Yelp
What an awesome experience, from the ferry ride to the bus ride to the park. It is a must do when in Fukuoka.

Yelp
If you are traveling to the island from most places in Fukuoka, you will need to first get yourself to the Meinohama train station. Then, you need to head to the ferry port (my friend drove us - about 5 minutes from the station). According to my online research you can catch a bus from the train station to the ferry stop. You can also bike, but I wouldn't recommend walking. At the train station, you can buy round trip tickets for the ferry. We had to wait about 20 minutes for the next ferry, and there really isn't anything to do in the ferry station. So you might want to bring a book or music. The ferry is pretty quick and there is an outside deck if it's a nice day out. Hopefully you plan to go on a nice day, because most of the appeal of the island seems to be that it's scenic and naturally pretty. When we got off the ferry we caught a bus (this is where it's helpful to have an IC transit card so you just have to swipe it instead of buying a ticket). The bus was very full and the roads were very winding. None of us were happy about that, but it took us all the way to the top of the island. We got to the entrance gate and found we needed to pay to enter the park area. I can't recall exactly how much it was, but I do remember us complaining about it a little. So it wasn't just a hundred yen or anything. When we arrived the sun was setting. Our friend had been there before and she raced us to a lookout spot so we could watch the sun go down over the water. This sunset was one of the nicest things I have seen in a long time. It was all shades of pink and orange and families were all gathered around peacefully watching as the sun dipped into the water and night fell. I would recommend bringing a picnic, so that you can snack and relax while enjoying the natural setting. We did this, and after we finished our food we decided to take a walk before heading to the last bus back down to the ferry port. During our walk we found a little tea shop and ordered green tea. It came piping hot and in huge bowls. Needless to say, I burnt my tongue on it, but still it was a delicious way to end our time on the island. While walking back to the bus stop, my friends and I enthusiastically decided that Nokonoshima would be a really great place to go in the fall. Especially around Halloween. The beautiful setting and abundance of flowers just seems like a nice place to spend a fall day. At the bus stop there was a huge line. We crammed ourselves onto the bus. Seriously, it was SO crowded. I think they needed to send another one to get the overflow crowd. But you really can't blame everyone for trying to squeeze as much out of the nice spring night as possible. Conclusion: Nokonoshima is a must on a nice day. There seemed to be a lot to do (shops and such) that we didn't get to explore since we went so late. Bring a picnic and plan on spending a lot of time just enjoying the beautiful scenery.
