The 16 Best Things to Do in New Orleans (Updated 2025)

"I start off many visits with a free walking tour, and NOLA Tour Guy's free walking tour is a great choice — you'll learn the neighborhood's history and get access to an expert local guide who can answer your questions (just be sure to tip your guide)." - Matthew Kepnes

The Best Walking Tours in New Orleans (Updated 2025)

"For a historian-led experience, I like the Nola Tour Guy (David G. Hedges); he's a historian who regales visitors with entertaining tales, runs a small team of local guides, and offers free walking tours of the French Quarter or Bayou St. John (one of the city's oldest cemeteries) — the tours are technically free but tips are expected at the end." - Matthew Kepnes

This was a really great tour to learn so much history about New Orleans. Sal has a gift for giving over his ample knowledge in an easy-to-digest way. I especially loved the treat of hearing him play a couple of songs with his harmonica. I highly recommend the French quarter tour when in Nola. Loved it. Thanks, Sal!

Allie M.

Google
I highly recommend their company. I took 5 of their tours and enjoyed each of them. My tour guides were all awesome: Sandy (Voodoo), Sean (French Quarter), Melissa (Ghost), David (Garden District), and Sal (Jazz). Each provided a new perspective and none overlapped in content too much.

Google
Did three tours with this company and was MORE than satisfied! We did the Garden District Walking tour with Laura and the French Quarter tour. For our French Quarter tour, unfortunately, the original guide was a no-show but the company pivoted quite well and provided us with a replacement. Both tours were informative and very well executed! Enjoyed both VERY much! HOWEVER, the very BEST tour we took was with Sandy for the Voodoo Tour. I must say, this is perhaps one of the best tours I have taken.....not just in New Orleans but anywhere. SUPER informative and it is clear Sandy is passionate about the subject! Was fascinating to the the "real story" of Voodoo and the cultural connections. DO NOT MISS THIS TOUR! It is unlike any other tour you will ever take and SO unique. Though we loved our other two tours, I am fairly confident that other providers could have given similar information. Sandy's tour is historically accurate, completely unique and totally engaging and fun! BOOK NOW!!!!

Google
Our tour guide was great, he studied in history and was really knowledgeable of American and New Orleans history. He shared alot about architecture and the story of the owners of the different houses through time.

Google
We had a great cemetery tour with Nola Tour Guy. Sal was great and did a fantastic job giving us the history of the New Orleans cemeteries. Super knowledgeable and added his own flair as a local working musician. We highly recommend this tour. We're fron Phila area and have been go NO very year since Katrina.

Google
The vodoo tour with Sandy was great ! She was very informative and knowledgeable. I learned so much on this tour and even found similarities to some of my own cultural traditions. I also took the jazz Frenchmen tour with Sal and he also performed a couple of creole songs. That was a very pleasant surprise, he's an excellent musician. The French quarter and ghost tour were very good too.

Google
Went on the Free French Quarter Walking Tour, and it was a perfect intro to our first trip to NOLA. It gave historical context, as well as an understanding of the different streets and areas in the French Quarter. The guide was knowledgeable, easy to hear even with a large crowd and on a busy Friday morning. We loved the personal recommendations of where to go to see, eat, and drink. We would definitely recommend this to anyone coming in for the first time!

Jeff M.

Google
We took a tour of the French Quarter and were so delighted with Daniel's mix of history and humor that we booked a tour of the Garden District. We were so delighted to get a text the morning of the second tour saying that Daniel would once again be our guide. The tours were fantastic, and a great way to cover a lot of New Orleans history in a short time.

Yelp
I did the French Quarter and Garden District tours. The tour guides were knowledgeable and witty. The pace was easy and the group size was manageable - we all were able to hear the guide. Both guides were helpful offering recommendations for places to visit.

Yelp
A group of friends and I enjoyed this walking tour with David through the French Quarter. It was a fun way to enjoy exploring the French Quarter and learn the history of the city! We did it right after Mardi Gras when there was still some hustle and bustle in the city so it was a bit hard to hear our tour guide at times but he did a good job of answering any follow up questions!

Yelp
I took the French Quarter tour, and I think the tour guide's name was Sean. I loved that he found shady spots for us to stand in along the way. I thought he did a good job of informing us, but not cramming in more information than I could handle. He also provided great food recommendations at the end of the tour, and thanks to him, I tried the best Po boy of my life. I've already booked a ghost tour and a garden district tour with the same company for later this week. I appreciate that free walking tours making getting to know cities more accessible. The fact that I can pay $20-$25 vs. $35 for a tour means that I can go on more tours. I'm grateful.

Yelp
Husband & I maded a very last-minute decision to take this tour, led by Eric. It was GREAT! I was relieved because my husband is a history guy, and is highly critical of people making sh** up, and he really, really enjoyed the info provided by Eric- the way that NOLA history was presented and especially that it was ACCURATE (according to him). I am NOT a history buff, and yet found Eric's presentation engaging, interesting, peppered with personal recommendations (which I always appreciate). At one point, Eric made sure we were aware of what looked to be an antique store, which we would have normally skipped over. Day after tour, we stopped in and were blown away by the art, history, and sheer beauty of this place (M.S. Rau). That tip alone was amazing. Just an example of the info that Eric provided. Can't be easy dealing with annoying people who may or may not tip you after a free tour - Eric was great. Highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to learn, be entertained, and gather a lot of useful tips along the way! Thanks, Eric!

Yelp
We went on three different tours (French District, cemetery and Garden District) with the Nola Tour Guy during our visit. Both David and Sal are knowledgeable with the history of the city and the buildings. It was far better than just roaming the areas by ourselves and I feel like I have better understanding of the city overall thanks to them. Highly recommended. And please even though they offer their services for free, tip them generously. They're worth every penny.

Rebekah B.

Yelp
Great and informative tour. Our tour guide Sandy was funny and paid attention to the pace of the group. She also gave food recommendations and answered all of our questions. A must do tour if you are in New Orleans.
google avatar

Sally A.

Yelp
Excellent walking tour to explore NOLA: French Quarters. Sandy was our guide, giving us the best insights, history and everything to know about this beautiful city! Sandy was funny and kept us engaged! We're glad that we did this walking tour on our first day. Thank you, Sandy!!
google avatar

Katrina B.

Yelp
Awesome tour! My husband and I did the 2-hour French Quarter tour with Daniel. He was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly. We learned much about the rich cultural history of New Orleans. He also gave us great tips and recommendations of local spots. Always great to see a city from the POV of a local. We wish we were in town longer, we'd definitely do another tour with their company!

Felix S.

Yelp
Our family had a wonderful time Dave did a great job telling the history behind the city and connecting it all together with different periods in American history Great walking tour !!
google avatar

Jackie G.

Yelp
Sandy was very informative! My girlfriend and I attended this tour twice with Sandy and she was definitely a very good tour guide. Will come back again and book with Nola Tour Guides! Thank you!

Vince L.

Yelp
Although extremely hot, my wife and I had a lot of fun on our tour through the FQ. Very knowledgeable and interesting. Would highly recommend!!
google avatar

Sue B.

Yelp
Laura was our tour guide and she gave us a nice tour of the Garden District. She knew the styles of the architecture and gave us lots of historical and interesting information about the homes in the area and showed us some of the current and former homes of famous owners. I would highly recommend going with this company.
google avatar

Annette F.

Yelp
I was hoping to get more insight into the architecture of the French Quarter. The dilemma of "history" tours is the amount of time standing in one place to listen. The tour, however, gave us lots of information, covered a fair amount of ground, and was interesting. The only main complaint - tour guide to tour guide - this "free" tour is so appreciated when you're on a budget, but don't ask for money up front.

Pamela G.

Yelp
Laura was wonderful to be with, spoke fast and clearly (and got in a lot of information), and gave us a great understanding of the history of the French Quarter. If we'd had time we would have considered additional tours with her, we liked her so much. These Guides don't get paid so make sure you tip accordingly (what she should get pd for 1.5-2 hrs of teaching while walking). We tipped $35 for 2 of us, for example.

Ryan C.

Yelp
We had a great tour of the French quarter. There was a great mixture of history mixed in with useful recommendations of places to see or visit for food and drinks. We ended up visiting several of the recommended spots and all were great. There was no pressure at the end to contribute a specific or minimum amount.

Steve B.

Yelp
Laura knows her history and knows the area. We had a great walk with her, learned a lot.

Mallory C.

Yelp
A group of friends and I booked a tour and got Eric as our guide through the French Quarter. I have taken a NOLA walking tour before, and was with two people who were new to the city, and two people who were born and raised in the area. We all walked away with new information. Eric was very informative and transparent which was appreciated. At the end, he was happy to share recommendations on restaurants and bars, and answer any questions from the group. Would absolutely recommend NOLA Tour Guy again!

Kelsie J.

Yelp
My group and I did the French Quarter Tour. The guide, Sandy, was certainly very knowledgeable, and at first we thought it would end up being a really cool tour. However, as the tour went on, she got steadily more and more vulgar. Her language was outrageous, swearing in just about every sentence, using completely unnecessarily inappropriate metaphors. I understand that New Orleans has a rough history, but the guide should be there to educate in a professional manner. She was a far cry from professional. There were small children present as well. We left about halfway through the tour as she was describing in grotesque detail the "guidebook" that people used to use to determine which prostitute they wanted to hook up with (and clearly enjoying the shock affect that her words were having). I have been on walking tours in cities all over the world, and never have I heard a tour guide as brazenly vulgar as this. If you have children, or consider yourself "polite company" in any way, I do not recommend this walking tour.

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Eric was great! He did a wonderful job of explaining the history of the French Quarter. He really knows the history of the beautiful buildings and had great insight into getting to know the French Quarter without spending a fortune. We truly appreciated his time, care, and attention to detail. I cannot recommend more! Please tip as this business does not charge for their expertise. I would 1000/10 recommend.

Teri T.

Yelp
Sandy was my tour guide for the Voodoo tour. Her knowledge of the origins of the religion and the history is amazing. She was happy to answer all my questions at each stop. I am so happy that it was suggested. I obtained so much knowledge and left feeling that the couple hours have enhanced my life.

pious a.

Yelp
He was very knowledgeable about the history of New Orleans. It was really interesting!

P B.

Yelp
It was a fun informative tour.Good paced and interesting history lesson . I would recommend it for sure.
google avatar

HEATHER S.

Yelp
I absolutely loved our tour of the French Quarter with Eric. He was informative and knowledgeable about the area. We got so much history. He invited questions and at the end of the tour he gave us tons of tips on what to see, where to go, places to eat and drink, areas to avoid and how to max your experience in the area. My only regret is that we didn't do this the first day. We also did a tour with David in the Garden District but I was less impressed. While David was knowledgeable he was hard to follow sometimes. I think he could work on voice modulation so he starts and finishes at the same volume.
google avatar

Soovadeep B.

Yelp
David's tour was great and very informative about the history of New Orleans. He showed us many cool spots to show how New Orleans evolved.
google avatar

Teresa F.

Yelp
Sal was great! Funny, entertaining and knowledgeable- time flew by- highly recommend this French Quarter tour!!!

Terri L.

Yelp
This was the first time my husband and I have been to NOLA so we went on the two hour walking tour of the Garden District with David. I would absolutely recommend his tours since he is very knowledgeable about the architecture. He also told histories of the homes as well NOLA, in general, that gave the beautiful homes character. Although the tour is free, his time was well worth a tip at the end!
google avatar

Yelp
We booked three tours with NOLA Tour Guy: French Quarter, Garden District, and St. Louis Cemetery #3. The first two tours were on the same day and led by Eric. We gave him 5 stars. Eric presents well, was neatly dressed, and well-spoken. He is very knowledgeable, interactive, and educational. Although some information during both tours was repetitive, he still made it fun and interesting. Feeling satisfied and happy about our choice we were looking forward to the cemetery tour we had planned the next day. Prior to the tour we received a reminder via email and same-day text confirming our reservation and the name of our tour guide, David. Knowing that he is the owner of the company, and having such a great experience with Eric the day prior, we were very excited. All until he showed up. If it wasn't for the hat he wore to be recognized, I'd walk past him thinking he was just another bum on the streets of New Orleans. His clothes (socks, shorts, and a T-shirt) and his bright lime green Van's were visibly dirty. His hair was a mess. It was extremely hard to follow his speech, mostly due to the fact that he moved around a lot and often turned away from the group while talking. It seemed that he was almost twitching. At one point he just belched loudly in front of all of us. And later he fiddled with his pants in the groin area in front of one of the mausoleums. Four people walked away from the tour before it ended and my daughter was asking me to leave too. And though I tipped him at the end of the tour, we walked away feeling appalled. In conclusion, I really like the concept of this company. And while David might be a good businessman, his History major does not make him a good tour guide. To the reader, don't get turned away by this review. Just make sure to book your tour with Eric. Eric-5 stars, David-1 star.
google avatar

H S.

Yelp
I would rate this as a 4.5 - Eric was knowledgeable, and a great guide. The only issue I had was that being a 'free' tour, the group got a bit large making the tour a tad impersonal. Otherwise, this is a great way to get an overview of the quarter.
google avatar

Jo C.

Yelp
My husband & I did all 3 tours in the first 2 days of our New Orleans visit. We learned so much about the history, culture, and yes, architecture, from these personable and informative tour guides. We also got appreciated advise about eating, coffee drinking and music, including an invitation to the jazz mass at Our Lady Of Guadalupe Church, which far exceeded any of our expectations! We were happy to be able to share much of what we learned with colleagues at the conference, many of whom took other tours that didn't provide the much depth of local history. Recommend this local tour company to anyone visiting NOLA.

Jen K.

Yelp
cemetery walking tour with Sal was an absolute highlight of our trip. I was traveling with three teenage girls and my mom. It was a rainy spooky day and he was so kind as to share his umbrella. He had a deep knowledge of the regional history and burial practices. Also absolutely charming with his little ukulele and he sang two different jazz songs for us. As a point of comparison we also paid for the far more expensive ghost vampire voodoo night tour with another company and it really lacked authenticity, it felt very silly and canned. Do this tour instead! Also it's a perfect morning experience... Go to Cafe du Monde in the park for beignets, stroll the sculpture garden, and then head over to the cemetery. Sal is what I would call a real public character, so glad to have met him and to have learned so much from his extensive research and his compelling storytelling.the

Lisa G.

Yelp
Very knowledgeable and entertaining. We'd recommend because he clearly enjoys what he is doing.

Doris S.

Yelp
Eric was a great and knowledgeable tour GUY. He had lots of extra information. It wasn't a cookie cutter tour. I highly recommend the French Quarter Tour and the Garden District Tour. I enjoyed both !

joel s.

Yelp
Phenomenal!!!' Very well researched by the guide. He was full of knowledge about the homes in the Garden District. He also had great side bar stories about the owners. Highly recommended

Ronnie P.

Yelp
Eric was an awesome guide. He knew the city, the history and kept us all engaged. A great walking tour. Be sure to tip generously on a free tour as we do them in most every city we visit. Have never been disappointed. I Recommend Eric 100%.
google avatar

Eve G.

Yelp
Our tour guy, Eric, was informative, professional, with a dry sense of humour. The suggestions for other French Quarter spots to visit (and ways to stay within our budget) have kept us busy for a few more days. The pay-what-you-think-it's-worth model is brilliant, and made us want to be generous.

Claire V.

Yelp
We did the French Quarters tour with our tour guide Sal and it was amazing! He had traditional historical information to share, but made the tour better than expected with personal tid bits about family history and even some New Orleans music. Definitley recommend!
google avatar

Geoff C.

Yelp
This your was a true highlight of my trip to New Orleans. Erik was such a knowledgeable tour guide and provided so much fascinating history and lots of funny stories. Also, any question that someone asked, he was able to provide detailed answers. I'm shocked they don't charge, this tour is so good!

Yves B.

Yelp
Great 2 hours tour of the French Quarter including some background history on the city and most known citizens over the years. Also provided some interesting restaurant recommendation and what else we should see while in NOLA. We tip $20 per person like most in our group of 12. Worth it to get you started and situated.

Cynthia S.

Yelp
I took a tour of the Garden District with David and he was so knowledgeable about the beautiful homes we saw and the history of the city. David is passionate about his work and we learned so much about the in-depth history of the Garden District, the people who lived there and how it all began. I recommend this tour and we really enjoyed it! When I am in New Orleans again, I will book another tour with NOLA Tour Guy!
google avatar

Farhana C.

Yelp
Enjoyed the two-hour walking tour of the French Quarter with Dave. He was very knowledgeable and shared the fascinating history with a fun, storytelling style.

Lindsay H.

Yelp
We took both the French Quarter tour and the Garden District tour with Eric - he is so knowledgeable and kind. He really went out of his way to make the tour engaging, keep us cool in the shade, and even humor us with the false stories other guides tell. Would absolutely recommend! The French Quarter tour is a must do, I appreciated that it also covered a lot about the cemeteries so we felt we didn't need a cemetery tour. If you enjoy architecture and have the time also take the Garden District tour.

Brenda G.

Yelp
Fantastic walking tour in the French Quarter. Eric is a fabulous guide. He's extremely knowledgeable, very personable and had lots of great stories. Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Cara O.

Yelp
We had a great time on this tour and learned a ton about the history of New Orleans. It was a great way to get to know the French quarter and surrounding areas and we learned about some great places to go next. I really appreciate the respect with which our guide spoke about the complicated past of New Orleans. He did not shy away from important history about things like the slave trade, mistreatment of native people and the relationship between voodoo and the Catholic Church. All in all I was really grateful for the opportunity to learn from someone so passionate about their community.

Kourtney S.

Yelp
The tour was excellent! David was very knowledgeable and presented the information in a fun and interesting manner. I highly recommend taking this your!

Emily H.

Yelp
Great tour with many recommendations for food and museums along the way! Definitely set the tone for our trip and helped plan the rest!

A S.

Yelp
Eric was absolutely amazing. Great guide, knowledgeable and engaging. Truly a great experience and highly recommended!

Ann W.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our walking tour of the French Quarter. Our guide Eric provided an interesting, informative, and entertaining narrative as we made our way from Jackson Park to outside St. Louis Cemetary #1. Highly recommend this tour.
google avatar

Stephanie O.

Yelp
Very knowledgeable tour guide. Great history lesson. Free walking tour started in Jackson square, spent about an hour thirty there and made our way north to St Louis Cemetery #1 and spent another 30 minutes there. 2 hours total tour. Payment was optional, but well worth a Jackson.
google avatar

Kevin Y.

Yelp
I typically don't enjoy touring historical landmarks when I travel, but boy am I glad that I booked with Nola Tour Guy! Grace guided us from Jackson Square to the St. Louis Cemetery and it was a fun and engaging experience from beginning to end. She is a wonderful storyteller and offered some great suggestions to continue exploring the area after the tour was over. Definitely recommend!
