The 7 Best Hostels in Australia (Updated 2025)

"I thought this was a cool, laid‑back little hostel only about 900 meters from the beach: all rooms are spacious with their own bathrooms, and the property has a tropical garden, communal kitchen, bar, swimming pool, and even a volleyball court. It’s one of the most chill places I stayed in, the staff were very helpful and friendly, and it’s quite affordable considering all the perks." - Matthew Kepnes

We had an amazing stay at Nomads Noosa! From the moment we arrived, we loved the relaxed and welcoming vibe of the hostel. The pool area is definitely the highlight, spacious, lively, and with a volleyball court right next to it. There are plenty of areas to chill, socialize, or just relax, both inside and outside. The dorms were very well designed. Having the toilet separate from the shower made a big difference when sharing. The bed was extremely comfortable, with a quality mattress and a thick, cozy blanket that smelled fresh and clean. Location-wise, it couldn’t be better. The hostel is close to the Greyhound bus stop, supermarkets, the beach, and loads of great restaurants and bars. On top of all that, the staff were fantastic, friendly, positive, and always happy to help with recommendations and tips around Noosa. We would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting.

The service wasn’t good. My friend and I booked that hostel to do Fraser Island and the people working there were really not organised. The check in was very slow. Told us last minute (8pm) about the 20$ deposit only cash for the sleeping bags (had a 7$ extra because I’m from Europe). The morning of departure, 6:30am, didn’t tell us where to find the sleeping bags and what car to jump in so we got into the wrong car until we realised our selves we were in the wrong car. The tour itself was great, our tour guide was fantastic. Shout out to Hayden! But this hostel was shit. Kitchen was disgusting, bugs everywhere and people don’t clean behind them. The rooms were okay but not the best. The only good thing was the washing machine already cale with the cleaning product.

We are from Melbourne and have previously stayed at Nomads St Kilda, which was an amazing experience. Unfortunately, our stay at Nomads Noosa was the complete opposite and absolutely unacceptable. When we arrived, the rooms were extremely run down and looked nothing like the photos advertised. The beds were old and dirty, and we found cockroaches on them. The room was unbearably hot, the fan did not work, and neither did the air conditioning. When we raised this with reception, the response was dismissive and we were told “it seems pretty cold in there.” The fan was eventually fixed, but only after I spoke to the woman at reception more than five times to remind her. The pool was filthy, with feathers and debris floating in it. The overall grounds of the hostel were dirty and poorly maintained to the point where we felt the need to clean areas ourselves. There were bugs everywhere. The kitchen was disgusting, with very old utensils, food left everywhere, not enough storage, and clearly not cleaned properly. To make matters worse, the kitchen closes at 10:30pm, which makes no sense for a party hostel where the bar serves alcohol until midnight. Food service also ends at 8pm. Safety was our biggest concern. The hostel bar allowed men from outside the hostel, including locals in their late 30s, to enter late at night. Several of these men sexually harassed us and other women. Security did nothing to protect the young women staying there and instead appeared to be on a power trip, prioritising these men over guest safety. Multiple women we spoke to had experienced similar harassment. There are also strange and restrictive rules. You can only buy drinks from the hostel bar from 5pm, and by 9pm you are forced into the bar or club area if you want to continue drinking. We were not allowed to sit outside and have drinks while playing card games, which felt unnecessary and controlling. You are also not allowed to bring your own alcohol, yet the hostel sells alcoholic cans at the front desk at any time of day. Overall, this was the worst accommodation experience we have ever had. This place either needs serious renovations, better management, and proper safety measures, or it should not be operating at all. If you are a young woman travelling alone, please do not stay here. Spend the extra money for a clean, safe, and respectful place to stay. Avoid at all costs.

This is a really nice hostel, unless you want to cook. The kitchen was filled with flies and people left their dishes, I had to constantly waft flies off my food whilst trying to make it. Some signs saying that fines are given for left dishes might help. And clear instructions to wash dry and put away before eating to everyone who intends to use the kitchen when they check in might help. If the hostel has budget the kitchen could do with some wooden spoons and new (sharp) knives too. And if there's even more budget for this hostel some new sofas would be good. Positives were the staff were all really friendly and helpful. And the rooms were nice and cool, clean and comfortable.

Terrible experience. The room was very dirty; you had to wear sandals all the time, otherwise it was impossible. The 16-bed dorm was very dark. But the worst part was the lack of basic rules for coexistence: there was a group in the room shouting and bothering a girl who was sleeping. In addition, we were made to wait more than an hour for check-in. The only good thing was the location, nothing else.

Not impressed — wouldn’t recommend this hostel. I’ve generally had great experiences with Nomads hostels, but Nomads Noosa Youth Resort has been a major disappointment. I stayed in two different rooms, and in both the air-conditioning didn’t work. I’ve also spoken to several other guests who said theirs wasn’t working either, so it’s clearly not an isolated issue. The bar prices are expensive, and while they advertise happy hour, the “discounted” drinks are the worst options on the menu. Most are basically half-sized portions — for example, bottled drinks that, if you bought two, would cost the same as a normal full drink. So you’re not really saving anything. The kitchen is in a terrible state. Wild turkeys were literally roaming around inside, eating out of people’s bags. There was only one kettle, one microwave, and the pans were old and poor quality. On top of that, there’s no air fryer or oven, which massively limits what you can cook — especially considering every other Nomads I’ve stayed at had proper kitchen facilities. What’s this hostel’s excuse? To make things worse, when it rained, the kitchen flooded. It turned into a complete swamp — an absolute horror show to try and cook in. Slippery floors, water everywhere, and nowhere dry to prepare food. Really unsafe and unacceptable. Overall, a really disappointing stay and not up to Nomads’ usual standard.

The rooms are fine, despite being a mixed dorm. However, the kitchen is very limited. The equipment was practically useless. The kitchen has an illogical and cramped layout. You can enjoy dining outside. When we had to leave very early in the morning, it was raining. Since we didn't have an Australian mobile number, we couldn't order an Uber. Unfortunately, no staff member was willing to help us. We were simply asked not to linger in reception.

A quick last minute trip up from Brisbane and we were lucky to get a room. There were 3 of us. Value for money ✅️ Slight noise from road outside bit still had a good sleep. My mattress a bit uncomfortable but clean sheets and super shower with complimentary products. Friendly staff and Friendly atmosphere. Quirky. Pool area lovely to soak up morning sun before we left. Would definitely use again.
