The 7 Best Hostels in Australia (Updated 2025)

"I found this to be one of my favorite hostels in Australia: the bar is lively every night, there are BBQs and events during the week, and the rooms and bathrooms are really nice and always clean. The bar is open seven nights a week with rotating daily drink and food specials, and the hostel also offers a travel desk, recruitment/jobs desk, and free daily activities. Because people come here to party, everyone is very social and looking to interact, making it a great choice for solo travelers who want to meet people." - Matthew Kepnes

The 6 Best Hostels in Melbourne in 2025

"Definitely a party hostel, I love that Nomads St Kilda hosts regular activities like karaoke and foam parties and has a huge common room with a pool table, foosball, and board games — it’s lively and not for those seeking quiet. The bunks are cheap metal frames with thin mattresses and no curtains, but the on-site bar and frequent events make it easy to meet people, and it’s only about a five-minute walk to the beach." - Matthew Kepnes

The 17 Best Hostels in the World in 2025 | Nomadic Matt

"Nomads outdid itself in Melbourne — it’s my favorite hostel in Australia thanks to a lively nightly bar, regular BBQs and events, and a friendly atmosphere that made it easy to meet people. Rooms can be a bit cramped but are comfortable; every dorm has an en-suite and private rooms have balconies, so most people stay here for the location and social vibe." - Matthew Kepnes

Great hostel. The team are super helpful and go above and beyond. Location-wise it’s well-connected whilst still being in a peaceful corner of the city. The private room was great. There are events in the evenings (e.g bingo) and the common area is very social, with pool tables, arcade games, a bar and PCs for guests to use.

I had such a fun stay at Nomads St Kilda. The vibes are super social, perfect for meeting other travellers, especially if you’re new to Melbourne. The staff are really friendly and always go out of their way to help with anything, from local tips to job advice.

Such a good location, minutes from the beach and all the shops. Super social with loads of bar events on every night. Natalie on the travel desk was great for helping me make a travel plan and knew loads of Melbourne. Can’t wait to come back!

Great hostel! Good vibes and many events at the bar. The private rooms are super nice and comfortable and very clean! The kitchen is amazing too, many stoves, fridges and sinks! The internet is super reliable too.

Hands down the most social hostel I’ve ever stayed in. There’s a free event every single night, making it incredibly easy to meet people and get involved. The staff are unbelievably friendly and genuinely go out of their way to make sure you’re having a great time. They even helped me when I was job hunting—offering advice, sharing tips on where to apply, and pointing me toward places that were hiring. Reception is open 24/7, and the team is always checking in to see if there's anything you need. The overall vibe of the hostel is unbeatable—welcoming, lively, and full of amazing people. It’s the kind of place where making lifelong friends happens naturally. I honestly couldn’t recommend it more. 100% would stay again!

Laundry room is great. I love paying $6 a pop for 24 minute washes which don’t clean your clothes followed by a tumble dryer that doesn’t dry them.

Fantastic social atmosphere during evening activities and it was easy to make friends with others in the dorm rooms. Make sure you go to the bingo! A little more effort is needed in the general social areas during the day though. The free pancakes in the morning were a really nice feature and ran for a good period of time to allow for hangovers! The rooms could get messy if people had their bags obstructing the floor but can’t fault the hostel for it other than some of the rooms were on the smaller side. Fantastic location within St Kilda, we happened to be there during Pride as well so the atmosphere was really great. The computers in the hostel were really useful. The main criticism lies with the kitchen which was super small with a lack of fridge space and the lack of air con meant it was unbearably hot and difficult to cook at all. Had a great trip overall though, thanks.
