12 Delicious Places to Get Golden Brown Empanadas in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Arguably the best-known empanada eatery in town, Nonnas has expanded to three locations with its very lengthy menu and perfectly symmetrical pies. With so many options to choose from, you can put together a sampler box of sorts with anything from Nutella to mac and cheese-stuffed empanadas. The Criolla empanada is very flavorful (and filling) with its chopped steak, potato, and hard-boiled egg stuffing that has hints of caramelized onion and cumin." - Sylvio Martins

Nonna’s Empanadas Review - Beverly Grove - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"We love Nonna’s not just because of the delicious food, but because empanadas are the perfect thing to hold and nibble on while exploring The Original Farmers Market. There are close to 30 different kinds in their daily hot case at any given time, so whatever you’re in the mood for, you’ll probably find it. That said, standouts for us include the spicy salsa chicken verde, the aromatic veggie samosa, and the pork, ham, and mustard-filled Cuban." - Brant Cox

Google
Luckily while visiting the area I stopped in to try these empanadas. Blew us away with the amount of options they had. My favorite was definitely guava and cream cheese. Cannot wait to return and try many more.

Google
A spacious and comfy place to grab your quick lunch or hang out. They have so many different flavors for both sweet and savory empanadas. They hot stamped the flavors on each empanadas. So cute! I picked: 1. Mushroom 2. Philly cheese steak 3. Chicken alfredo 4. Shrimp 5. Guava 6. Nutella 7. Cheesy scramble 8. Ham & cheese

Google
Very good empanadas! I always call 30 min prior and order 1 dozen of beef empanadas. I live in Bellflower CA. so when I come to my doctor’s appt this place is only 10 min away from the office. I take advantage and order 1 dz since I don’t have a nonnas near my home. I spend close to $70 for 1 dz beef empanadas. They only offer 6 chimichurri sauce with my order, either spicy or non spicy. Service I rate a 3 because the few times that I faithfully visit here, the person who I pay when I walk in either a young lady, or a woman with a heavy accent or a tall gentleman can really use a smile once in a while to make the atmosphere more welcome and humble.

Google
Crisp and flaky crust, delicious fillings, and all of the empanadas are stamped on top with what they're filled with so no one can complain that they got the wrong flavor! The service at the West 3rd Street location is fast, friendly, and the restaurant itself is clean and organized. It's a nice place to get a handy snack to go.

Google
Empanada 3 pack / carnitas, filipino beef, chicken + jalapeno - 5 stars! House made spicy chimichurri - 5 stars! Nonna's Empanadas started on 3rd street but a few years ago they left their original location and moved down the street to a larger and more spacious shop. It suits them very well. The new space has a big counter for displaying all their wonderful, delicious hand-made empanadas. I love how many options they have. I had to limit myself to three and it was very tough to choose. Each empanada was tasty and packed with filling. Their flaky dough is awesome. I love that they stamp the top with the flavor name. I kind of want to set aside a day to sample every single flavor. I don't know if that is a good or bad idea though. Probably a bad idea for my stomach would be my guess. Do not forget to ask for their house-made chimichurri! They have mild and spicy. You could put this on almost anything and it would elevate the meal. Fair warning - parking is a bit of a challenge for this location but be patient and circle around the block and you'll be rewarded with a spot.

Google
Lots of flavors and variety in the menu but not all were available when we visited. Especially the most classic ones like ham and cheese or beef. Some new flavors like Hawaiian were not so great, other like the chicken and mushrooms were good. For the price we have tasted better empanadas in LA.

Google
So I haven’t had empanadas in a long time, so I was in the neighborhood so I stopped in and I would have to say there is a variety of options. Plenty vegetarian chicken pescatarian all the above I took and ordered the chicken Alfredo which I would say was decent now the Samsoa was delicious I wash the water different dipping options

Google
When you do one thing, you can master it. Nonna's has done just that ... mastered the empanada! Such a great variety of of excellent flavors, both savory and sweet. Cheesesteak, Mac & cheese, samosa, mushroom, shrimp, Nutella, banana, and so many more. All are excellent!! Great prices, too!

Yelp
They gave us the wrong Empanadas and I called to speak to the Manager. I'm still waiting for the manager to call me back. We wanted carne asada and they gave us beef! They need to know what they are giving the customers! The manager called me and he was so nice. He is going to refund the 2 empanadas that were wrong. If you haven't tried these you have to. They are delicious!

Yelp
Sorry I am keeping this comment short. Definitely not my favorite. They bake there empanadas, also not so tastey I prefer my empanadas to be fried. Let me know what you think. Service is good. Not so much on the Ambiance (Grey like) inside.

Yelp
I was looking for a quick snack and came across Nonna's Empanadas. They offer a wide selection of sweet and savory empanadas. I took advantage of their combo for $12 and tried their Cuban and Cheeseburger empanadas. Their prices are on the high side, but these baked empanadas were very tasty and nicely filled. Staff was friendly and helpful. It is a very casual place. Overall, these empanadas were a great treat and snack.

Yelp
My first time trying and I get the hype. I got the beef empanada which is one of their top choices. It is so flavorful and the sauce elevates it even more.
google avatar

Patrick C.

Yelp
We ordered the beef empenada and philly cheese empenada. Our favorite was the philly cheese as the cheese helped bring out the flavor of the meat. Although the beef empanada was good as well, its flavor was more subtle. We would give the other flavors a shot too! The carne asada was top on our list but was sold out.

Yelp
I will NEVER patronize this establishment again after what my eyes have seen. I was eating lunch and a dog came in. Not only did the owner let the leash go for the dog to roam around, the dog jumped on the counters and the workers did not clean them after. it makes me think what happened minutes before I walked in

Yelp
It's hidden inside the market place at The Grove. It's quite expensive really, but it's so yummy and we also get it whenever we visit The Grove.
google avatar

Kristi Y.

Yelp
First time at the Grove and we stumbled upon Nonna's Empanadas. We were impressed by the selection of fillings they have to offer. From savory to sweet, they have a lot! We decided to get four to go and it came with sauce on the side. The flavors we got were Beef Jalapeno, Chicken Alfredo, Carne Asada and Philly Cheesesteak. Wow was I impressed by the different choices we had. I would say my least favorite one was the beef jalapeno and the chicken Alfredo or Philly cheesesteak were my favorite! The empanadas were perfectly made and the texture was so crispy! I would definitely come back for more!

Yelp
I've been eyeing these golden pockets of dough and deliciousness for quite some time now. But never had an excuse to come here... until recently. I was attending a potluck, and decided to bring empanadas from Nonna's. Online ordering is done through ChowNow. If you're ordering a dozen, there isn't really a way to checkbox more than one flavor. At the bottom of the page I just wrote it under the Special Instructions (5 beef, 4 chicken, 3 veggie) and crossed my fingers they would read it. You can also add chimichurri sauce on the side. I got a confirmation email after purchasing, and then a ready for pick up email at 1PM on the day of. I requested 2 PM, but the order wasn't ready until 2:20 PM, which ended up being fine because I arrived at 2:40 PM thanks to traffic. There was parking in the back and a handful of spots on Holt Avenue. I realized I didn't order enough for our vegan friend and bought an additional Samosa Veggie. The display case had a decent amount of options left over in the afternoon. Some flavors were already sold out, but the staff member offered to bake a new one (additional 20 minutes). Unfortunately they did not have enough ingredients for the Beyond Meat one, but I appreciated the offer. The outer layer had the right amount of thickness and toastiness. I'm more used to it being more fried and crispy, but these baked ones had a nice flakiness to them. The fillings for each one were generous, both the chicken and beef were flavorful. If I return, I'm getting the Nutella one!

Yelp
If all the empanada here are like the two I had, I'm baffled as to how this place has a high review. Of the two, the Salsa Verde Empanada was the least disappointing. We found them to be really try and lacking rich flavor. We asked for a side of salsa to help lubricant them down our throat but the salsas weren't good... The variation of flavors available is really cool!

Danielle B.

Yelp
The food and service are amazing. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I work across the street and come here all the time for lunch. This is in response to a one star review from Bree down below. My dog is a real certified service dog, she jumped on me to notify me to take my medicine before I passed out and I let her leash go so I could grab my medicine. The staff did indeed clean the counter after she jumped on me then the counter to get my attention. So next you want to say something about an establishment or a person why don't you ask instead of running your mouth

Yelp
Friends kindly ordered variety of empanadas delivered to our door. There's something really delightful about getting an assortment of doughy pockets with a variety of fillings. In this case, some are hit and some are miss. Have tried several: Pepperoni - best so far. The oil from cheese + pepperoni really juice this one up Chicken mushroom - very good Cheeseburger - very good Cubano - not much flavor Chicken salsa verde - so so dry, hard to choke down. could not finish Spicy chimichurri - it's ok, not a lot of flavor. Need to use a lot to overcome dryness, and I prefer hot sauce given the calories in this. If you try this place out, recommend getting a variety so you can find your fave!

Yelp
Decent empanadas. Beef was the best. Chimichurri hot sauce was decent. Nothing amazing. Branding and packaging is nice but wish the food delivered better in taste. Friendly service and cute decor.

Yelp
Food 3/5 Service 4/5 Ambiance 3/5 Located inside the grand central market, nonna's is famous for so many different flavors for empanadas. I came to the market to have tacos which I'm so glad I did, but I was curious about the empanadas so I got the beef one but it was extremely bland. The cashier didn't offer sauce so I had to go back for it. I asked for a sauce (chimichurri) which made it slightly better but even with the sauce, I would not go back unfortunately.
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
Excellent empanadas. Top-notch service with a lot of different selections; we went with more traditional choices. Thankfully, they were open later than some of the other vendors too, and it was well worth it.
google avatar

Richard Y.

Yelp
Terrific empanadas in a ton of flavors! 2x, 3 bite sized empanadas and a drink special were excellent! The cheeseburger and carnitas flavors were so savory with a crispy, flaky pastry. Friendly staff and a solid place inside the Farmers Market.
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
So many great empanadas at Nonna's Empanadas! The staff is friendly and gave me some great recs. My personal favorites are the carne asada and chicken and mushroom. They pack the empanadas and they pair great with the spicy chimichurri sauce. In additional the decor is very clean, with plants draping down the ceiling and walls. Nonna's is a great restaurant for a quick bite!
google avatar

Rutwik R.

Yelp
I usually go to the location at The Grove but this location was nice and larger with friendly staff and plentyof seating. I usually get the guava cream cheese empanada. It's not too sweet and has plenty of filling.
google avatar

Madeleine B.

Yelp
Good empanadas near Beverly Center. They have lots of food flavors to choose from. So far I've tried the carne asada and Filipino chicken. Both were great. I came later in the day, around 8, so they were out of a lot of flavors. Come early for the best selection. Overall nice spot for a snack, plus they have a spacious seating area.
google avatar

Vanessa R.

Yelp
First time trying Nonna's empanadas and their flavor selection was impressive! I appreciated that they had different flavor profiles for different countries and I was totally bias to go for the Filipino fillings. We tried the Filipino chicken and the Filipino beef, as well as some sweet ones like Nutella. The workers were very nice and helped us decide which flavors to try since it was our first time there, and their little booth at the Farmer's market was really cute! The empanadas themselves were hot and fluffy but kind of dry especially for the Filipino chicken one. Overall great flavors, our favorite was the beef, pepperoni and the Nutella one!
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
Delicious empanadas, I got eggs and bacon, Philly cheesesteak and a Cuban! Staff super friendly and helpful. Parking out front or side streets.

Jewel G.

Yelp
The empanadas were good. There was a variety to choose from . Guy at the counter was annoyed to be working here . Good location.

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Stumbled across this place at the grand central market & I don't regret it the empanadas were so delicious I will be returning very soon !
google avatar

Nicolas J.

Yelp
Wow just wow! Came here for a "snack" left with a 3 empanada combo with their dragon fruit drink. Beef jalapeño Philly cheesesteak And pepperoni were my choices for my first experience. Pretty quick service since the empanadas seemed freshly baked and kept in a heated area for quick serving. Couple seats to eat at the small but efficient hut in the farmers market area of the mall / the grove. Highly recommend coming here if local, or at the mall, or even just visiting LA probably one of THE BEST empanadas I've eaten
google avatar

Yelp
The best empanadas ever!! Five stars is exactly my total rating!!! Thank you guys so much for everything!!!! ^^

Yelp
Saw Nonna's Empanadas on our way to my fiance's doctor's appointment at Cedars Sinai and checked out Yelp. One of his doctors highly recommended getting some savory and sweet empanadas from here. After the appointment we walked across the street and was greeted by Bryan, he quickly took our order and gave us the top 10 empanada recommendations. The restaurant was very clean and had plenty of tables and chairs to eat inside and outside. My fiancé got 2 empanadas; a carne asada and a chicken and mushroom empanada. I got the 3 empanadas combo which comes with a canned soda; I got a Filipino beef, Chicken Alfredo, and a Nutella. The crust is thin, edges were crispy, and stuffed with lots of filling. My fiancé and I loved our empanadas and will definitely come back to try other flavors.

Yelp
For empanada specialty shop, their empanadas are most disappointing I've personally ever had. We got few different kinds to taste and share. Pre made empanadas were warmed up and handed to us. The outside part was saugy and chewy and the inside was dry. Usually stale empanadas taste as such. We felt like they were stale and very dry. Prices wouldn't have been bad for good quality empanadas, but for what we got there, I wouldn't eat it for free. Glad we tried. We won't be going back or recommending it.
google avatar

Sinny S.

Yelp
Not sure what the hype is. They werent good. And the workers can be rude. If you were to show the top 10 popular, put it closer to the glass case. By the time you see it and want to change, good luck. You get these workers rolled their eyes.
google avatar

Yelp
Nonna's Empanadas has such a great variety of different empanada flavors, both sweet and savory. My all-time favorite would probably be the sweet guava empanada, since the filling is so flavorful and smooth. The empanada crust is also buttery and chewy. Would recommend getting a couple flavors and splitting with a friend, since the empanadas are quite filling. Service is very quick, and it's definitely a good option for a quick meal. Later in the day, they tend to run out of flavors, so definitely go early if you want more options.

Tai T.

Yelp
These use to be the best. Quality and taste has suffered as prices have increased over the years. More times than not you'll get flavorless empanadas as consistency has gone out the window.
google avatar

Ari B.

Yelp
Clean place with descent empanadas. The branding of the flavor on each was a nice touch for sure. Selection was vast and I tried a couple of their offerings. Perhaps because we came late in the day, the empanadas tasted a bit tired and not at their freshest. Counter service was fine and unremarkable. I would come here again if I am in the neighborhood and really craving an empanada. Would not go out of my way though.
google avatar

April C.

Yelp
Nonna's is like a donut shop, but with empanadas! There's a large variety to choose from: sweet, savory, spicy, and vegetarian. All of them look amazing so it was hard to choose. My favorite became the beef and jalapeño empanada! I got it with the spicy chimichurri. I also tried one with chicken and peppers. The service was good, as the staff at the counter was patient in explaining the different flavors and which one was his favorite. The location was clean, lots of windows, and a nice place to sit outside and enjoy your food. I've been several times and would go again.

Yelp
I spoke to Eddy the owner and we had a very pleasant conversation. The employee in question was new and her supervisor should have been there to make sure she was not completely lost. He acknowledged the employee could have done a better job of communicating, regardless. He genuinely wanted to know what happened so he could deal with it and make sure it didn't happen again. That says a lot about him and his commitment to good service. As for the empty empanadas, he explained sometimes the cheese explodes and the filling falls out. The employees are supposed to make sure they don't serve those, but if they do and you bite into an empty shell, they will gladly replace it. So it seems the owner really cares about his customers and his product. He advised me they opened a new store front in Grand Central Market downtown. If he cares enough to call a customer like me to straighten things out, he surely cares about good customer service and the product he's selling at each and every store. So for that I amend my review to 5 stars. I'm sure my next visit will be nothing but mouthfuls of yummy empanadas and competent customer service. Thank you, Eddy.

Yelp
Chicken & Mushroom: very flavorful, did *not* skimp on the chicken at all, filling, crispy exterior with gooey center (9.5/10 as it lost .5 for its mushroom to chicken ratio). This was recommended by restaurant staff, who were very pleasant! Spinach & Cheese: very flavorful (perhaps a little more than the chicken and mushroom), the moisture from the spinach made the crust a little soggy on the bottom (9/10 without sauce, 9.5 with sauce) Guava: left much to be desired, tbh. It was supposed to have cream cheese in it as well, but I barely saw or tasted any; the cream cheese would've balanced out the sweetness of the guava--which was overpowering (6/10) Overall, I would return for a quick bite--and maybe to take cute photos as the interior was beautifully designed and very boho chic.

Yelp
I was looking for something light and easy to eat and stumbled across Nonna's! While I wish I could give a more extensive review, I can only judge this place off the 2 empanadas I tried. The great thing about this place is that they feature over 2 dozen different types of empanadas. Sweet, savory, vegetarian, meat, you name it. There's something for everyone! They even have a vegan one! They marked up the menu so you can see what each empanada contains! And each empanada is marked on the outside so you know which one you are eating! I tried the Beef Jalapeño and the Cuban empanadas. It cost me just a little more than $10. They were both okay. Nothing really blew me away. Also, the Beef Jalapeño really didn't have that much spice to it. I can't handle super spicy food, so the fact that I barely noticed the heat made me a little sad. I was hoping for some more heat! Overall, their selection is good and the empanadas were average! It IS hard not to go back to try them all!

Yelp
headed to this place for empanadas. located in some storefront with other buildings. exteriro and interiro simple clean. has outdoor seating. simple menu of empanadas with various fillings such as chikcne, ham and cheese, pizza, etc etc. decided on a beef filipino with varuous seasonings, ground beef, and potato. total damage $5. all premade and kept warm in some glass oven. so waited 1 min and got the food. and the verdict? its good. warm and. pastry outer dough baked nice with good crunch bite. filling were good portion and nice flavor. but portion is really small. for $5 little over priced. should be $3.5. anyway while wont be repeated often due to price i dont mind eating it again once in a while.

Yelp
Nice snack across the street from Cedars-Sinai. Loved the corn and cheese empanada, it was savory and packed with flavor. The veggie empanada was a little bland without the chimichurri. Overall, enjoyed both. The spicy chimichurri was amazing - I would take home a jar of this next time. Many sweet and savory options, warm and easy to eat on the go!
google avatar

Melody S.

Yelp
I was a little disappointed to see that before noon they had sold out of some popular flavors. They do have a variety of flavors. I think the dough is too savory for the sweet fillings. They would be better with a less savory dough. I liked the filling in each. Service was great. Associates were kind and knowledgeable. Nice little spot.

Yelp
WOW OH WOW! My friend and I decided to travel from San Diego to LA and we happened upon this place! We were looking for a small snack and man oh man! Such good empanadas! It's so hard to pick when they have so many good options. I'm not sure if their menu changes a lot. But they have both savory and sweet empanadas. Based on what items were low these were some of their top sellers: Philly Cheese Steak, Carnitas, Nutella, and Apple Pie. However, they could constantly be running out of everything. Good thing when me and my friend were there, they were refilling their racks! The line was always long, but very fast. Also definitely get the sauce to try with them. I believe it's chimichurri I would def go back if I'm in the area. Super delish!

Dave M.

Yelp
This place is fire. Started with salsa verde, then carne asada, then samosa beef, and dulce de leche &banana for dessert. Oof just perfect! Go try one! The woman behind the counter was very sweet and fast! Such a lovely experience.

Yelp
TASTEY OR WASTEY? A waste of my time!!! Not sure what the big deal is about this place. We were here a few weeks ago and we stood in line for 15 minutes then decided to go to Phils instead. Phil was amazing Now we're back and tried Nonna's.... We tried a beef, and a chicken empanadas, they were both a disappointment. One had a chemical taste, the beef was very greasy. I am glad we ended up at Phils again, because we helped a lady that was having a stroke... God is good. I wouldn't recommend Nonnas. But I did take some good pics... lol
google avatar

Cigano M.

Yelp
I waited in line for 15 minutes and was disappointed. The chicken empanada tasted odd.... The beef empanada was just plain. Service was good and the ambiance at the grove farmers market is great. My wife and I expected more from this place based on the line. I will try again next time I am in town. Sorry
google avatar

Marilyn G.

Yelp
This is the second time I came to this EMPANADA place. There's so many selection, like a lot !!! There's like 2 long GLASS CASES filled with EMPANADAS! Some Empanadas have good fillings and flavors, but some don't have a good one. BUT the DOUGH is always good, no matter what Empanada I get. Everytime I come here, I alway wanted to try their Cheese Burger Empanada, but they are always out of stock. I wont say this Place is Good or Bad, 'coz I've only tried a few of the Empanadas here so far, there's like 28 Empanadas Flavor Fillings for me to choose from still. I will still come back here and try some more of their Empanadas the next time I will be in this area again. And now it's time to go home in SAN DIEGO ;)
google avatar

Natalie E.

Yelp
Such a great spot for a quick pick me up snack or lunch! The empanada's were really good. The sauce was the star of the show- they give the food a lot of flavor. The only one I would t get again because it was very bland was the Filipino chicken. Without the sauce though I'm not sure if I'd enjoy it as much because it's a bit dry. Overall I'll be back to try out more flavors!
google avatar

Chelsea A.

Yelp
The empanadas are so delicious and fast obviously since already made. Great seating inside. The woman working was super nice. In terms of what I ordered: I would rank carnitas empanada first, then the beef empanada, and then the chicken empanada. The chicken was a bit dry but they were all good and the best empanadas I've had in LA so far!
google avatar

Lily H.

Yelp
First time trying Nonna's Empanadas. Yes this is basically an all empanada place. The photos on Yelp are really enticing, seeing how filled they are and the different fillings that they have. I was also skeptical about these size too. Almost $6 for a single empanada. Yep! It lives up to the hype! It's a pretty hefty empanada and really filled. It's almost like eating half a sandwich. The size of one empanada surprised me, it's not a small dumpling size like I had imagined. They have veggie options, meat, and dessert ones too. They can also individually box the orders for you, so everyone on your group can get what they order. Also these make an amazing food gift box or snacks to be served at an event. Each empanada is stamped with the branding and what the filling is. Pretty neat! Highly recommend checking out this place!
google avatar

Kathy X.

Yelp
Pretty solid empanadas! The carne asada and banana dulce de leche empanadas were so good. I'd skip out on anything chicken, the chicken empanadas are just a bit dry and flavorless.
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
I think since coming here the first time I've tried empanadas from a bunch of different places and realized these were just alright and not worth the price which is now $5.25 each..kinda crazy for a snack sized item. They are a bit larger and packed with a nice amount of filling but since they've become more popular they kinda seem to have a "take what we have or leave it" kinda attitude. They were out of over half the menu by 6pm the other day and also completely out of the chimichurri sauce...and that's when I realized these actually don't taste good at all without the sauce.... They were very dry and I kept having to drink water. The flavor wasn't as good as I remember and might just be because I liked the sauce more than the empanada lol. Funny though they were still selling the large containers of chimichurri sauce if you wanted to pay for those. Probably won't come back anymore since finding better places.
