Norham Castle

Nice little ruin of a castle with lots of good information boards around the site. When we visited there were some areas minced off due to preserving areas for renovation. We were not able to get over the bridge to the main structure, which would have made this visit much better. However, a nice site to visit. There was a small free car park at the site which is only a small easy walk from the castle. There are no toilets.

Great little stop off, would love to come back once English Heritage have done the work to it. Is currently not fully accessible but still a good stop to look around.

Imposing stronghold on the bank of the river Tweed just outside Englands most northerly village. Several information boards give an insight to it's construction and historical events. Unfortunately much is fenced off and inaccessible.

Nice free day out, carpark is free also. It would have been nice to go over the bridge of the Moat n into the castle or to walk through the main gateway. There are signs saying that work will be taking place. It's still lovely to walk the grounds.

Great looking castle just a shame it's not completely accessible at the moment but worth a return visit when it is.

It's Castle ruins and much of it is behind barriers due to the concern that one could be injured by collapsing materials. But it's free and historically fascinating.

Can't believe this is a totally free attraction. We were looking for a cheap activity when we stumbled across this castle. It's a ruin but is actually quite large. Plenty of nooks and cranies to explore and plenty of space for a few kids/dogs/enthusiastic adults to run across. Car park is tiny, but it doesn't seem to get too busy. An absolute gem of a place.

A great castle to visit and walk around unfortunately for us we turned up there was barriers blocking entry to the castle across the bridge (which we only found out when we were direct in front of said barriers). We did manage to get inside by descending and climbing the inner mote. Not easy with a three year old and nine year, but was very disappointed that there were to signs at the entrance or car park. We were encountered a dog walker who said that the bridge had been closed for four months, surely ample time to fix up some kind of advance notices to avoid disappointment. Found what we thought might be a medieval or Tudor pottery shard dug in a mole hill, which was a added surprise. I have the knocked off of two stars, for the access issues and lack of notice prior to arriving at the castle, I do however agree with other reviews the village of Norham is worth visiting.

I am a huge history fanatic! Being in Scotland immersed in all of the history and tragedy that surrounds the country is a history buffs high. This demolished castle is up on a hill in varying states of wreckage. There is (or there was no charge when I was there October 2014) no charge to enter. We walked around the lands and up the steps to take it all in. Be careful if they're still allowing people upstairs it is rickety and there are lots of tripping hazards. Despite its age the demolished castle and lands are superbly kept. The dogs ran around the grounds and through the halls and jumped over the partially erect walls. They had a field day. As did we! We walked around for a few hours and even sat and had a picnic before we left it. If you're visiting the area definitely don't miss this one.

Norham castle although part of English heritage estates is free to enter and in my opinion slightly better Ruins than Etal Castle I had visited earlier in the day. Pleasant well kept location just outside Norham village with limited parking. The village has public toilets which is signposted and a couple of pubs and shops.

A good castle close to the border it has nice grounds for a picnic. It was a strong castle started in the 12 century and built upon over the years as the scottish kept trying to get it but it was in a good postion There is a lot of the keep left and you can get onto the second level and the area still looks pretty much as turner painted it Stop on the little bridge and look down on the lower levels of the casle Check the time as when we went last time english heritage had changed the times and it was closed Toilets are in the car park and there is a small shop selling gifts and drinks

A great little castle, if just for it's very laid back appeal. Whilst it is English Heritage property, I don't think I have ever seen this place staffed, and we have just walked in and out as we pleased! Lovely banks around the castle, and plenty of features to nose around. Yes, definitely don't forget the camera the view across Norham town is great!

Quite a cool place to visit and it was free. You can access the first floor of the castle and it fills an hour if your day
