7 Best Day Trips from New York City

"This is a daily ferry leaving every 10, 20 or 30 minutes to take you to Shelter Island. You came all the way to Greenport. You want to see more of the water. For $2 each way, this is how you do it. This is the best way to get some beach time in—and truly escape the city—without paying much. Rent or bring a bike; the island is totally easy to get around on one. Then go to the beach with a bottle of something delicious." - Alex Van Buren, Andrea Whittle, Devra Ferst

Google
They are doing construction on both ends of the Green Port and Shelter Island. Longer waiting time and very slow moving ferry adds to a bit of aggravation.

Google
I have been going back and forth to shelter island my whole life on this ferry and recently the service has been really disappointing. Not only did they increase the rate for passengers by 50%, they also refused to give me the discount for round trip because I didn’t buy the specific ticket for it. Like why can’t you just be friendly and honor your already overpriced pricing instead of being difficult because I made a mistake. It’s also always felt suspicious to be that they only accept cash. I’m disappointed in what has become of the ferry service. It used to be good but they got really greedy and rude.

Google
Always friendly and professional. Humans cost $2. You buy tokens from a machine which you feed into a wicket as your board, after all the cars are loaded. Cars pay onboard, $14, cash only.

Google
North Ferry Company is a great way to get from North Fork LI to Shelter Island. You can then explore Shelter Island or go into the South Getty Company to get to the Hamptons. Certainly it is better to get on the ferry earlier rather than later. You do have to drive to 6th Street in Greenport to line up for the ferry. The staff are great and the ride is smooth as is the boarding process in your car. Much easier than struggling with Hamptons traffic. Have cash when you get on the ferry though.

Google
It was a short ride but worth every second of it. I love traveling..so maybe it's just me. The waves, the lovely windy breeze. It was a nice view while on the ferry.

Google
Quick and easy service drive on and in a few minutes you're over to Shelter Island. Its $12 for the one way. Very efficient.

Erwin List

Google
Reliable ferry service connecting Greenport to Shelter Island with scenic harbor views. Runs frequently, though expect long lines in peak season. Efficient way to access Shelter Island.

Thomas Kusch

Google
A smooth 10 minute ride from Shelter Island to the North Fork (and/or back). As for the South Ferry, their pricing structure is weird. The single transfer is $12/car, while the round trip costs one dollar more. So, it cost us $25 to get from the Hamptons to the North Fork, and would cost $2 more to get back...

Yelp
Recently had the pleasure of visiting a friend on Shelter Island. There were several choices of how to travel to the Island from Greenport, one was to swim, but that option seemed difficult since I had no way of toweling myself dry. The other was to hitch ride with a random boater, but that was not an option since my friend's residence was further inland on the Island. Therefore, I chose the North Ferry. The ferry's staff was instrumental in sizing your vehicle to the right lane on the boat while effectively situating all the vehicles on the boat. That was the shortest ferry ride I have ever taken. Seemed pricey for a one mile or less ride, but fuel prices are high, and they need a staff to make it all work regardless that it is only one mile ride. So, it seems.
google avatar

Rohini G.

Yelp
More efficient than expected! Website says every 20 minutes but it ran almost every 5-10 minutes. It is also not peak season so I had very short lines. Prices are now $24 for vehicle and driver round trip and $6 roundtrip for each additional passenger.
google avatar

Yelp
One of two ways to get to Shelter Island. You can drive or walk on. Next time I'll drive in with North Ferry and return with South Ferry for a day trip. Cash only.

Yelp
Punctual, precision-like, professional and efficient are words that come to mind when you board the ferry to or from Shelter Island. For those afraid of the water, these fine professionals will put your mind to rest. If you are returning the same day, make sure to purchase a round-trip ticket to save a few bucks. Ferries come every 15-20 minutes and you wont wait very long for the next ride. Check with the operator for when the last ferry leaves so you don't get stranded.

Yelp
Years ago The North Ferry only took in cash. I was on the ferry the day the IRS came by and seized their records. Now they try not to take cash. Anyway the North Ferry is family owned and connects Greenport to Shelter Island. It is a very short very expensive ride. The high price is to keep the riff raff of mid island off of Shelter Island. Let the riff raff honky tonk in Greenport! But as it goes in life, no price is too high. When you tell someone no they are usually more inclined to try. Most of the ferries are old. There are a few new ones. Most of the captains are rude...there are a few nice ones. There are a few hungover ones. Maybe a few drunk ones. Most of the people who use the ferry in the summer season are at best wankers... at worst -- wankers. Locals try very hard not to use the ferry but it's the one way on and off the island connecting the North Fork. One could run over to the South Ferry connecting Sag to Shelter but that is no better. Basically the North Ferry is a necessity and the family and government know it! It is a pretty ride across the water. Though the line to get on the ferry is excruciating in the summer...stretching and meandering along route 114 for miles... passing in front of quiet homes. A 10 minute ferry ride might warrant an hour wait. But no matter how awful the experience is--the riff raff cannot and will not be stopped! Last week i witnessed a man getting out of his waiting car on line and pee on someone's lawn. When i mentioned to him that there was a bathroom at the North Ferry office he looked toward me as if i had just peed on his lawn. Power to the riff raff!

Yelp
I love these ferries.... they are super.. never much of a wait, they fill up and go across taking you from the north fork to Shelter Island or from.. Then you can either tour Shelter Island or you can drive across it and take the next ferry to Sag Harbor. Now on the South Fork.. saving lots of drive time. You can get out and see the water while going like a tourist.. it doesn't get old. They don't take cards.

Yelp
For a short ferry ride it is completely overpriced, $15 dollars for a one mile trip is outrageous, A complete monopoly. Build a bridge a put these crooks out of business.

Yelp
I came here on a Sunday morning with a group of 5 people to take the ferry to Shelter Island which is a great day trip idea from NYC. Our car, driver, and 4 passengers cost $30 for the round trip. Remember to have cash on hand and give it to the attendent aboard the ferry. I like that you can drive onto the ferry and its open so you can see the water from your car. It's a quick 10 minute trip to get to Shelter Island from Greenport. There's always a ferry every 10-20 minutes. I just wish they had online ordering of ferry tickets which would be easier.

Anrana S.

Yelp
Connects Shelter Island to Greenport on the North Fork. $13 for car and driver. $2 per passenger. No reservations. First come first serve. You pay as you get on the boat, cash only, so have your money ready. . It's 1-1/4 miles between the 2 points. Pretty uneventful.
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
Reliable ferry service, every 10-20 minutes, for $15 for driver and car plus $2 for additional adults. Discount if you return same-day. First-come, first-served. Fun excursion.
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
$16 for vehicle and driver roundtrip. Believe it's extra for additional passengers. $1/person, no vehicle. Ferries run constantly.

Yelp
Ferry to and from Shelter Island. Unless you own your own boat, this is pretty much the only way to get over to Shelter Island is by way of the North or South Ferry's that churn up Peconic bay all day long. The charge is about $11 dollars to/from Greenport and everyone is super pleasant. The ferry is the old style open deck where up pull right up and can sit in the car or get out and watch the other boats all over the bay until you get over to the other side. Drive right off and you are at your destination.

Yelp
Love this little cute "ferry" . Easy on/off. Never a problem. Very inexpensive. A must do!
google avatar

Mike H.

Yelp
Let me start by saying that the ferry service itself is perfectly adequate, does everything you would expect. My issues lye with their website and not taking credit cards. At least post on the website cash or check only. Fewer and fewer people carry cash nowadays. If you are going to only accept cash, put an ATM at each dock, that way you make money on the ATM fees. Or start accepting credit cards but at a $1 premium, that is more than enough to cover the transaction fee. No excuse for outdated business practices.

Yelp
Great people work on this ferry some of them are my friends from HS. I admit that prices are kinda harsh but could you imagine putting diesel into those boats. The pictures I posted are from a Booze Cruise with The Realm playing great music. I went on this cruise this past summer (08') they had plenty of food and a couple of kegs really fun 3 to 4 hrs. It is really nice for the ferry company to free up a boat a captain for this granted they charge a fee but a lot of places don't want to get involved with something like a booze cruise. I think the cruse was about $35 total for food and all the beer you could drink.

Yelp
Very quick trip across the water with a friendly staff. Ferry's are about every 20 minutes and pay in cash for the fare on board!
google avatar

Wayne Y.

Yelp
First of all, the trip itself was great. Beautiful sunset, perfectly smooth, short ride. It was easy to load and unload. There were cars on there, which is a great service. I had a very mixed experience because the token machine stole our money. It's supposed to dispense a token for every $2 you put in. Unfortunately, we got 2 tokens and 4 quarters back after putting in $8. Not a huge deal, but it was still annoying. Because we were there on a weekend, the office wasn't open. There was nothing the people on the boat could do. They said that the machines are old and it happens. Not the best excuse, but I get it. Still sucks to lose money to an old machine!

Michael B.

Yelp
Friendly & organized staff. Got us on and off the ferry quickly and efficiently. Still serving at the bar, which is great and they have announcements about social distancing

Yelp
I have taken the North Ferry for over 40yrs. I love to walk on and stroll through Greenport. However, in all the years of taking the ferry I have NEVER been spoken to so rudely!! BOTH trips to and from Greenport!! A young lady- ticket taking said, Come on get out of my way to my 74 year old mother and then a man opening the gate, " YELLED to the group of walk ons, Come on move it people, get on the ferry already!" Unbelievable!!!! How about?welcome aboard!!!
google avatar

Ryan F.

Yelp
Incredibly overpriced, as is South Ferry tbh. If you are walking on have fun figuring it out because there are virtually no signs, and you are yelled at after we asked if we could walk on with no response. They must make a killing because it looks as if nothing as been updated on the docks in years. To bad they have no competition, so they stop ripping people off.

Anna S.

Yelp
A ferry is a ferry: takes 10 mins to cross from Greenport to Shelter Island. I decided to leave a review because of the rudeness of one employee: the young lady who was managing the incoming traffic. She was throwing around phrases such as "Come on, just move out of my way!" And "I don't give a crap, I just want you to get on the boat and not waste my time"... nothing too crazy, but made us feel weird...
google avatar

Hector M.

Yelp
Just follow the signs, try not to skip the car queue line on the right as you pull in, and you'll be in Shelter Island in 9 minutes. The car staging is organized and you are assigned a lane by the captain as you drive onto the ferry. There are two ways to get to Shelter Island: North Ferry from Greenport (North Fork) or the South Ferry from Sag Harbor (Hamptons). I decided to go through the path of least resistance and traffic: North Ferry. It was a $15 round trip for the car/driver plus $4 per passenger.

Yelp
North Ferry Co. has never failed us. We've done short day trips out to Shelter Island and it's a quick ride. It's cheap and friendly. $17 same day round trip for the auto & driver. Another $2 for each adult passenger. Kids were free. There can be a bit of a wait sometimes but not too bad today. Oh and the whole ferry ride is about 8 minutes.
google avatar

Dana L.

Yelp
Two dollars for a one way ferry ride. Bills must be exchanged for tokens using the token machines in the waiting room. The machines are very out of date and don't return change in the form of money, so if you insert money more than what you need to pay, you will receive change back in the form of tokens. Any extra tokens will then need to be exchanged for money with someone who works on the boat. Quite an annoying system.. The actual ferry ride is enjoyable. There are two deck levels in the ferry; the upper deck has benches for people to sit, relax and enjoy the ride and the lower deck mainly used to serve passengers with cars who are utilizing the ferry service ($11 dollars for one way and $17 for a RT ticket on the same day). The ride itself is about 7-10 minutes. My bf and I took the ferry to Shelter Island but found out after we got there that to explore the island, we needed a car. Getting from one place to another was definitely not doable by walking alone so if you do take the ferry, I'd recommend bringing your car or at least, a bike along! Since there was no way to get around, we took the next ferry back to Greenport. Overall, the North Ferry is an inexpensive and convenient way to get to and from Shelter Island with lovely views especially when the weather is nice! A recommended experience for those visiting the area!

Janel Y.

Yelp
From Shelter Island we took the North Ferry to Greenport. $9 for the vehicle and $2/person. This ride was a bit longer than the South Ferry trip from North Haven to Shelter Island. The people are friendly and the ferry can hold about 9-10 cars. The ferry leaves every 10-20 minutes. Great views and a great way to get to vineyards if you got lost like we did and were coming from the South.

Yelp
Scam artist watch out! Tries to sell you a round trip ticket when you're only going one way and it's CASH only!! Guess who isn't paying taxes on that money. "Are you heading back?", the rude money taker asks me as I'm waiting on the ferry to go back to Long Island from Shelter Island. Yes, on my way back thinking he's going to make small talk or something. So he charges me $22. "How is that possible when my way here was $17 from Sag Harbour?" "So your not heading back?", he said. "I'm going back to Long Island not Shelter Island. I only need a one way ticket? Is that what your charging me for?", I said. Now he's shaking his head giving me an attitude. "So what do you want lady?", he said. Wow you're 70 plus years old learn some manners! I want a 1 way ticket and not to get scammed like you probably did to 90% of your customers today. You got my mom in the car next to us for the round trip ticket!!! He quickly disappear once she realized what happened no where to be seen. I'm reporting you to the IRS buddy!!!

Yelp
I love riding this ferry, the views are great and it saves a kit of time. I have never been over in a car but it 's a great way to take a break on a long bike ride. People are always friendly but it's so small that in summer months it can be really crowded. Doesn't really matter for a bike but there can be some long waits for a car.

Angie W.

Yelp
Wonderful boat ride to Shelter Island on a hot day. Very organized and fairly inexpensive.

Mark G.

Yelp
All was good having a great day out east on the north fork went on ferry to shelter island never being there not knowing what to expect the deck hand with red hat was a complete prick and a rude as* Ho*e. About one way ticket or round trip guy needs to learn some manners and respect. Guy thought he was on top of the world working on the tinny pos ferry. Would not recommend north side ferry
google avatar

Chris I.

Yelp
The one and only way to get from Shelter Island to Greenport by car and while it's a little pricier than the South Ferry, it is a little longer of a trip. Great staff that are always friendly and professional. Loading and unloading of cars is always quick and I've never had a bad experience with them. Plus they take you to the North Fork wine trail which is awesome!
google avatar

Carrie Ann S.

Yelp
Love the ferry ride, the employees and the great service. In the comfort of my own car I get to the Island safely and with amazing views.
google avatar

Marie M.

Yelp
Worth the money to avoid Hamptons traffic back to the north fork! Quick and easy the ferry holds about 20 cars and loading and unloading is super fast. This ferry takes you to Greenport. It's a very smooth ride! Beautiful crossing in a warm summer day. You pay on board the ferry in cash only

Yelp
The Wind Was Howling Today!!! I went as a walk on............What a great boat ride to Shutter Island. I was visiting a friend who has not been feeling well. I can't imagine a better time for $2 bucks!!!
