The Most Australian of Australian Restaurants

"Pubs are everywhere in Australia, but for Melburnians, they’re as essential as AFL football or excellent coffee . Everyone has their die-hard favorite, and the North Fitzroy Arms , which first opened its doors in 1874, is an excellent gateway to the genre. To go all-in Aussie, order a pie in pea soup, a plate of oysters, or a round of sausage rolls, and chase them with a Carlton draught or a Rutherglen chilled red." - Alexandra Carlton

Delicious beautifully made food, rich, full of flavour and clearly made with love. Definitely the best tasting pie in the state! Honey carrots, pork cutlet with pesto spaghetti was amazing especially with the sticky date to finish! The staff were so friendly and helpful making a fun relaxed atmosphere that will absolutely have me and my family back. Cannot recommend this place enough! Big shout out to the Chefs and FOH staff that did an excellent job!

Caught up with an old mate for a few beers and a bit of dinner on a Sunday evening. The beer was cold and food was fantastic. Bill had a special, duckleg frites and I had a pork schnitzel that filled the plate. All of the staff were friendly and helpful except for one who couldn't be less friendly and helpful if she tried, a bit of blight on what would have been a perfect afternoon. Photos arent the best.

This place has got such a great vibe and friendly service. Our food was taking a little bit longer to come out and we were given some entrees on the house - unexpected and thoughtful. Food is great, burger is a classic. Make sure you book. Great place to catch up with girlfriends.

Another inner Melbourne pub that has benefitted from a glow up. Dining room looks great and was almost full the Sunday lunch we visited. Very comfortable space, attentive service and a delicious roast beef lunch. Good value wine list too.

Been here twice now and both times have been very pleasant and enjoyable. Mid crowd here from family with kids, small groups to couples. What I love about this pub is that they do the classic meals really well. The sausage roll was a home run; I could easily tell this was home made compared to what you’d buy in the shops, the pastry was soft and flaky. The Sunday Roast was delicious, I just wished there was more meat. But the sauce was on point and the veggies were enjoyable to eat. Lastly and in my opinion the pubs star dish is the sticky date pudding. It’s one of the best in Melbourne in my opinion. It’s a nice big portion and the fruits in the pudding come through.

We enjoyed a beautiful lunch yesterday. Very attentive waiter. Excellent quality and generous serve. Elegant yet old fashioned vibe. Also appreciated flexibility re booking due to unforeseen circumstances. Look forward to returning.

Staff and ambiance were nice but the food was rather disappointing. Specifically, the $54 bisque that was on special turned out to consist of six mussels, a medium size piece of snapper and a small amount of sauce. Not even a piece of bread to go with it. And luke warm. It tasted nice enough but we expected much better (and more) for that price.

sunday roast was good but unsure if worth $37 considering the plate was mainly fully of veggies and a Yorkshire pudding. would be interested to try other menu items, and overall a good vibe for drinks.
