We like this place a lot. Just finished our second annual trip to this campground. We usually camp for about a week or so with another family which eases the workload dramatically.
The owners seem very nice and extremely helpful and are quick to hand out discount coupons depending on your interests and what they have on hand. This place has tons of camp sites all packed pretty close to each other all under a scrub pine forest canopy. All the sites seem to be pretty well sited and situated near any one of the four bathroom buildings.
There's a large main building with the camp store, community room, showers and laundry. The camp store is small but stocked all the necessities however they have strange hours; 8 am -- noon and then 4 pm -- 8 pm. A large really beaten up community room with some run down benches, pool tables, ping pong and foosball. They have a nice playground across from the main building as well. The showers are adequate and the place is kept pretty clean, but very stripped down. The laundry facilities are located at the entrance to the women's showers which is very convenient for women to throw in a load and then shower while it's running. However, it's really inconvenient for men as they are mingling with the women waiting in line for showers and there is no sink in the laundry area and they would have to walk all the way around the building to access one.
There has been a lot of condescending remarks about the quiet time here. However, as an outdoor enthusiast (that's why we camp!) you can hear the birds and the breeze, and as a parent bedtime isn't as much of a problem as the louder campgrounds. We were big fans of the quiet time and by 10:30 we had mostly had it. There are also no campfires or open flames allowed here as the scrub pines look tinder dry even after a rain shower. This also seems to cuts down on the rowdiness of the campers. Where we were in Area 4, the place is really quiet during the afternoon as well, while most campers are out exploring the cape and it's a great time to kick back and read a book or siesta on a hammock. The majority of campers we've met there are really friendly and easy going. On the whole they are pleased with this campground's quiet time policy as the noise isn't an issue and your neighbor's party won't keep you up all night. Let's face it, parties only suck when it's someone else's... On our last day we were awoken at about 6:30 am by some very noisy birds and I felt like saying "shush" to them. Never heard them really on any of the other days.
The bathroom buildings are awesome! Real toilets, auto-off push-lever sinks, real paper towels and an outlet for blow drying your hair. The lights are always on and it's always kept very clean -- never experienced an overflowing broken toilet. However, you might have to plan around cleaning time at which the bathroom is closed for 1.5 hours and you need to make other arrangements. This might be staggered around the campground, but I'm not sure.
Best part of this place is that it's right next to Head of the Meadow beach, which is large and beautiful!! From the front office it's about a 5-10 minute walk through a wooded path. No need to pay for beach parking when you can easily walk there! However, if you do drive in order to set up all your posh beach gear for a day of it, you can expect to pay $10. Although, after 4pm parking is free and in the summer it's still really sunny until about 7 when the sun starts to hang really low in the sky. This is an open ocean facing beach so there are strong waves (surfing) and the rip tide can be a concern. Also, this is a favorite fishing beach for the local harbor seals, and where there are harbor seals there are large sharks looking for a meal... Summer is when the great whites are seen off the coast of Cape Cod, but there are very few shark attacks on humans on record for this area.
Now keep in mind this campground is a business, and they must be making a pretty penny as they haven't upgraded anything in years, however most things are in very fine working order. Camping charges are $35/site per night. This fee is for one vehicle and two adults. If you camp with any children they are an additional $3/child per night. A third adult is an additional $12/night. So a family of four can expect to spend $41/night which is some of the priciest camping we've ever done. All the stuff in the store is premium priced as well. The showers and laundry are pretty cheap though, 25 cents for a 7-minute shower and 75 cents for a load of washing. They also sell ice and fill propane tanks there.
All in all, it's a clean, well-managed campground with all the amenities necessary for a successful car-camping experience. About a 10 minute drive from Provincetown which is the only place with culture, shopping and decent night life on the cape. During quiet time go out raving in P-town to get it out of your system, then pass out with the clean ocean breeze at North of Highland Campground!
