ISLAND PARADISE ! When I was young kid I would often hear my friends say....we just got back from a week on STRADDIE meaning North Stradbroke Island. My parents weren't campers and we never went near Straddle for a family outing. In fact I lived most of my life in Brisbane and I never visited Straddie despite it being one of the most popular Southern Queensland vacation spots. And tourists loved the island...nice beaches, good fishing and walking trails. Fast forward to 2002 and we moved up to Brisbane again from Adelaide, SA. After 12 months living in Norman Park..an inner city suburb we found the perfect place to live on the water in Cleveland..an outer Eastern suburb. My wife and I moved into our beautiful townhouse in July, 2003 and what an ocean view. We could see North Stradbroke Island 17 miles across Moreton Bay. And there are many other islands in Moreton Bay incl the much smaller South Stradbroke Island ( not so good ), Peel Island ( we've been there ), Coochiemudlo Island, MacLeay Island ( friends of ours just moved there ), Pannikin Island, Lamb Island, Karragarra Island, Russell Island, Long Island, Lagoon Island, Cobby Cobby Island, Short Island, Eden Island, Stingaree Island, Crusoe Island, Kangaroo Island, Tabby Tabby Island, Tuleen Island and Never Fail Island. I think I named them all. Of course Moreton Bay is a fisherman's paradise....all kinds of large fish plus stingrays, dolphins and some of the biggest White Pointer Sharks in the world. When my wife's parents from California came to Australia for a vacation in late 2003 my wife and I showed them a fun time. And when they stayed with us for a few days in Cleveland we went to STRADDIE. And to do that we drove my wife's little Toyota Echo 3 door Hatch on to the vehicular ferry at the nearby ferry terminal. It was a fun 17 mile journey across the bumpy seas of Moreton Bay. We saw a few Dolphins swimming beside us...maybe racing us. When we arrived at North Stradbroke Island ( 106 square miles ) we drove around around the island stopping to look at popular tourist spots. The white sand beaches were beautiful..almost untouched. We had lunch on the far side of the island ( Point Lookout ) at the Blue Room Cafe...fish & chips of course and a beer. My wife's parents had a great day and so did my wife and I. Don't be like me and wait so long to visit this beautiful island..the second largest sand island in the world !
